Download or read book Interstices written by A. G. Rigg and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking new ground in interdisciplinary scholarship of late medieval England, this collection of essays celebrates and addresses the work of renowned medieval scholar A.G. Rigg. George Rigg's interests span medieval Latin, Anglo-Norman, and Middle English literature and philology; the contributors to this volume are an international group of colleagues, students, and friends of Rigg's, whose essays are as wide-ranging as Rigg's own interests. The contributions include: new editions of Middle English texts; an overview of the editions of Chaucer from the nineteenth century to the present which expounds editorial trends through the years; studies of major Middle English writings which cross boundaries into social history and the history of the book; a codicological study of the literary and material evidence for the use of scientific and utilitarian texts in late medieval English manuscripts; and related historical studies. Each essay is anchored in the textual realities that grounded Rigg's own scholarship, and bridge the boundaries between traditional academic disciplines - a crossing of interstices in homage to a teacher, friend, and colleague.
Book Synopsis Chaucer's Scribes by : Lawrence Warner
Download or read book Chaucer's Scribes written by Lawrence Warner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2004 announcement that Chaucer's scribe had been discovered resulted in a paradigm shift in medieval studies. Adam Pynkhurst dominated the classroom, became a fictional character, and led to suggestions that this identification should prompt the abandonment of our understanding of the development of London English and acceptance that the clerks of the Guildhall were promoting vernacular literature as part of a concerted political program. In this meticulously researched study, Lawrence Warner challenges the narratives and conclusions of recent scholarship. In place of the accepted story, Warner provides a fresh, more nuanced one in which many more scribes, anonymous ones, worked in conditions we are only beginning to understand. Bringing to light new information, not least, hundreds of documents in the hand of one of the most important fifteenth-century scribes of Chaucer and Langland, this book represents an important intervention in the field of Middle English studies.

Book Synopsis Popular Measures by : Amy M. E. Morris
Download or read book Popular Measures written by Amy M. E. Morris and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular Measures examines the influence of Congregationalist church practices on poetry and poetics in early New England. It considers how the rejection of set prayers, and the privileging of more spontaneous oral forms (such as the plain-style sermon and the conversion narrative) in colonial churches influenced the style of locally written religious verse. The book consists of an overview of church practices and their implications for poetry, followed by a series of case studies focusing on texts written at different stages of the colony's development from 1640 to 1700: the Bay Psalm Book, Michael Wigglesworth's The Day of Doom, and Edward Taylor's Gods Determinations. The investigation concludes that colonial religious writers transformed the poetic conventions they had inherited from England in order to enhance the effectiveness of their verse in a culture that portrayed forms and formality as, at best, able to lead an individual only halfway on the journey towards salvation. --University of Delaware Press.
Book Synopsis Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer by : Geoffrey Chaucer
Download or read book Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer written by Geoffrey Chaucer and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to overstate the importance of English poet GEOFFREY CHAUCER (c. 1343 c. 1400) to the development of literature in the English language. His writings which were popular during his own lifetime with the nobility as well as with the increasingly literate merchant class marked the first celebration of the English vernacular as a tongue worthy of literary endeavor, most notably in his unfinished narrative poem The Canterbury Tales, the format and structure of which continues to be imitated by writers today. But the impact of Chaucer s work was felt even into the 16th and 17th centuries, when the first major collections of his writings set a high standard for how authors should be presented to the reading public. This widely esteemed seven-volume set first published in the 1890s by British academic WALTER WILLIAM SKEAT (1835 1912), Erlington and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge University is based solely on Chaucer s original manuscripts and the earliest available published works (with any significant variations or deviations between versions highlighted in the extensive notes), and comes complete with Skeat s informative commentary on many passages. Volume VI features: Skeat s general introductory to the seven-volume set a glossarial index to Chaucer s language an index of proper names an index of authors quoted or referred to by Chaucer an index of books referred to in Skeat s notes a general index to the seven-volume set and more.
