In the last decades the philosophical interest in these arguments has grown again significantly. In this book cosmological arguments are investigated. A cosmological argument derives the existence of God from the fact that there exist caused things. In the first part of this book the author argues that these arguments show that it is plausible that the cosmos was brought about by a necessarily existing conscious, free being. However, as is shown as well, it does not follow that this being is also the first cause of the whole of reality, something typically said of God. In the second part of the book a new argument for the existence of a first cause is presented, based on the premises of atomism and causalism. Subsequently, the author proposes a new modal-epistemic argument for the existence of a conscious, free being who is the first cause of reality. Objections to both new arguments are evaluated and refuted. The book concludes with the observation that these arguments can be combined with cosmological arguments in order to arrive at a renewed case for theism.

It focusses on the question of which level of linguistic description (abstraction) best represents typical recurring linear structures in language. Laura Göttmann also provides an alternative way of describing regular patterning which is based on an overview of well-known linguistic concepts in abstract language description from early Structuralism to today and of corpus linguistic developments. The study may be considered a contribution to a theoretical framework based on abstractions and instantiations in language description evolving from corpus linguistic language analysis.

As a result, the demand for tools to identify transformative innovations, assess future risks, and support precautionary decisions for sustainability is growing by the day in business and politics. Scenarios are a means of simplification, reducing the real-world complexity to a limited number of essential factors to analyze their interactions and support policy formulation, with indicators as communication and monitoring tools. In particular, in a time of “fake news” and “alternative truths” a critical reflection amongst producers and users of scenarios and indicators is overdue—the capability for critical self-reflection is what distinguishes science from pseudo-science, and is a condition of trust. As part of the preparations for the third general survey, the IRSS decided to re-analyse the existing data and conduct a comparative analysis, in order to establish the value of the collected information and determine which elements of the previous questionnaires to retain. Specifically, the objectives of this study were to:critically assess the questionnaires of the 2012 and 2016 surveys; evaluate the comparability between the 2012 and 2016 questionnaires; review the existing analysis reports; re-analyse the 2012 and 2016 results; conduct a comparative analysis of the 2012 and 2016 data to establish whether changes in implementation of the Convention can be determined.
