Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant civil society - characterized by the independently organized activity of people as citizens, undirected by state authority - is an essential support for the development of freedom, democracy, and prosperity. Thus it has been one important indicator of the success of post-communist transitions. This volume undertakes a systematic analysis of the development of civil society in post-Soviet Russia. An introduction and two historical chapters provide background, followed by chapters that analyze the Russian context and consider the roles of the media, business, organized crime, the church, the village, and the Putin administration in shaping the terrain of public life. Eight case studies then illustrate the range and depth of actual citizen organizations in various national and local community settings, and a concluding chapter weighs the findings and distills comparisons and conclusions.

Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has become a hugely influential institution. It is the authoritative voice on the science on climate change, and an exemplar of an intergovernmental science-policy interface. This book introduces the IPCC as an institution, covering its origins, history, processes, participants, products, and influence. Discussing its internal workings and operating principles, it shows how IPCC assessments are produced and how consensus is reached between scientific and policy experts from different institutions, countries, and social groups. A variety of practices and discourses – epistemic, diplomatic, procedural, communicative – that make the institution function are critically assessed, allowing the reader to learn from its successes and failures. This volume is the go-to reference for researchers studying or active within the IPCC, as well as invaluable for students concerned with global environmental problems and climate governance. This title is also available as Open Access via Cambridge Core.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Plato, philosophers have developed rational arguments for the existence of God. In the last decades the philosophical interest in these arguments has grown again significantly. In this book cosmological arguments are investigated. A cosmological argument derives the existence of God from the fact that there exist caused things. In the first part of this book the author argues that these arguments show that it is plausible that the cosmos was brought about by a necessarily existing conscious, free being. However, as is shown as well, it does not follow that this being is also the first cause of the whole of reality, something typically said of God. In the second part of the book a new argument for the existence of a first cause is presented, based on the premises of atomism and causalism. Subsequently, the author proposes a new modal-epistemic argument for the existence of a conscious, free being who is the first cause of reality. Objections to both new arguments are evaluated and refuted. The book concludes with the observation that these arguments can be combined with cosmological arguments in order to arrive at a renewed case for theism.

Book excerpt: In her dissertation, Laura Göttmann deals with the concept of pattern as it is used in the Pattern Grammar. Patterns are derived from frequency-based corpus analysis and represent a way of interpreting the English language within the framework of COBUILD research. The study critically assesses the concept of pattern and of pattern flow within the framework of the Pattern Grammar. It focusses on the question of which level of linguistic description (abstraction) best represents typical recurring linear structures in language. Laura Göttmann also provides an alternative way of describing regular patterning which is based on an overview of well-known linguistic concepts in abstract language description from early Structuralism to today and of corpus linguistic developments. The study may be considered a contribution to a theoretical framework based on abstractions and instantiations in language description evolving from corpus linguistic language analysis.

Book excerpt: Globalization and telecoupling are enhancing the complexity of the coupled socio-ecological system constituted by the interaction between the global ecosphere and the anthroposphere. As a result, the demand for tools to identify transformative innovations, assess future risks, and support precautionary decisions for sustainability is growing by the day in business and politics. Scenarios are a means of simplification, reducing the real-world complexity to a limited number of essential factors to analyze their interactions and support policy formulation, with indicators as communication and monitoring tools. In particular, in a time of “fake news” and “alternative truths” a critical reflection amongst producers and users of scenarios and indicators is overdue—the capability for critical self-reflection is what distinguishes science from pseudo-science, and is a condition of trust. The authors of this book test established measurement and modeling approaches against new challenges, assess the weaknesses of prevailing innovation theories and the political-ideological embedment of archetypical scenarios, highlight deficits in taking the physical basics into account, and the need to understand global interaction and the stepwise process of energy transitions, point out technical as well as conceptual weaknesses in data collection, harmonization and indicator generation, always with a view to solving problems.

Book excerpt: Between 2012 and 2013, Mali has gone through the most challenging period of its history as a nation-state. From a praised democracy, the country almost collapsed after the onset of a complex set of rebellions that threatened to divide or completely erase it from the map. This book provides a three-dimensional analysis of the conflict drivers as well a deep assessment of the conflict resolution mechanisms that were set up to restore Mali control over its territory. From the outbreak of MNLA insurgent attacks in early 2012, the crafting of AZAWAD,the fluidity of MNLA alliance with ANSAR DINE, MUJAO and AQIM, the coup d'état of Sanogo and downfall of Amani Toumani Touré, the responses of ECOWAS, the 'core countries' (Algeria, Mauritania), the African Union, the role of France to the re-hatting of AFISMA and launch of MINUSMA, all crusty details and facets of the crisis are meticulously scrutinized. This book is a must-have for academics, diplomats and strategists interested the new conflict dynamics in Mali and West Africa in a global era.

Book excerpt: The IPPC Implementation Review and Support System (IRSS) has held two general surveys among national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) to review contracting parties’ implementation of the IPPC and its standards. Data from both surveys that took place in 2012 and 2016 were analysed separately (IPPC Secretariat, 2014; 2017), but a comparative data analysis was never performed. As part of the preparations for the third general survey, the IRSS decided to re-analyse the existing data and conduct a comparative analysis, in order to establish the value of the collected information and determine which elements of the previous questionnaires to retain. Specifically, the objectives of this study were to:critically assess the questionnaires of the 2012 and 2016 surveys; evaluate the comparability between the 2012 and 2016 questionnaires; review the existing analysis reports; re-analyse the 2012 and 2016 results; conduct a comparative analysis of the 2012 and 2016 data to establish whether changes in implementation of the Convention can be determined.

In fact, it is notoriously difficult to answer, because what counts as money is not a straightforward matter. A variety of measures have been advanced, and they tell different stories about the changing supply of money in an economy. These differences are of more than merely academic interest, because measures of the money supply are inputs to the decisions of central banks. Wrong answers can lead to wrong actions, with potentially devastating economic effects. This book examines the measure of money and, in that light, the actions of the Bank of England in in the lead up to the 2008 financial crisis and its aftermath. It is essential reading for anyone interested in money, measures of its quantity, and the relationship between the money supply and the economic cycle.

Book excerpt: The works of Aristotle are central to the Western philosophical tradition, and scholarship on Aristotle, especially in English, has burgeoned enormously in the last forty years. Aristotle: Critical Assessments collects together articles on Aristotle's philosophy otherwise scattered over many philosophical, classical and historical scientific journals. The set thus provides a significant resource for those approaching the literature for the first time and for those already studying Aristotle in a professional capacity. Aristotle has been so influential and remains so in so many distinct areas that it is often the case that, say, a reader is acquainted with the literature on metaphysics or ethics but knows nothing about the literature on psychology or the philosophy of biology. Guided by new editorial introductions, this set guides the researcher, teacher or student through the issues of major concern in contemporary Aristotelian scholarship in the English-speaking world. The articles are arranged as follows: * Volume I covers Logic and Metaphysics * Volume II covers Physics, Cosmology and Biology * Volume III covers Psychology and Ethics * Volume IV covers Politics, Rhetoric and Aesthetics
