Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Country Reader I This Country Reader is not meant for the very young children, but for the elder children of our village schools - children who are supposed to read with ease, and who are expected to know the meaning of ordinary English words. I have striven to use the shortest words and simplest sentences at my command, and to make my meaning as plain as possible. I should like to remind my readers that this little work is a Reader and not a text book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Country's Readers The Readers of this series have at least one important distinction: they are composed almost entirely of selections from our own authors. Of the thirty-seven pieces in this reader, twenty-eight are from American writers. Seven selections have been made from the few books of foreign origin that have come to be regarded as juvenile classics, and two from the Bible. The proportion of foreign and of native literature in American readers has been usually just the reverse of this, giving the great part to foreign writers and a small part to our own writers. And the native selections included have most often been those on which the copyright had expired or that had never been copyrighted. Quite a different plan has been followed here. The first design has been to present our own authors. The ground of choice has been solely one of fitness. Each selection from our native authors has been made on the ground of its representative nature, or of its special application to phases of our own home life. The result is the embodiment of an expensive collection of copyrighted material; but we be lieve the character of this material justifies the expense and labor incurred. In view of the fact that the selections are from American authors, about American subjects, for American youths, it seemed appropriate to call the series Our Country's Readers. The selections presented are from the latest authorized readings, and correspond to the author's approved editions. The grading has been made with the utmost care, both from principle and theory and from actual tests with pupils. To this end the Second; Book of Country Life Readers has been prepared. Like the First, it was written chiefly for a rural people, and it therefore deals largely with problems of farm life. Thrift is its keynote and progress is its aim. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Country Life Readers: First Book There is an increasing demand for the education of adult illiterates who have somehow missed their opportunity in early life, and also for the better education of adults that have a very limited degree of learning. The city has provided for this need to some extent with evening Schools, designed mainly for foreigners. All the textbooks for evening schools have, therefore, been pre pared strictly for immigrants and city dwellers. Rural America is coming to realize that there exists a need for education among adults in the rural sections as much as among those in the cities. For this reason moonlight schools, rural evening schools, which begin their sessions on moonlight evenings, have been established and have now been extended to fifteen States. The people attending these schools demand textbooks which deal with the problems of rural life and which reflect rural life, and to meet this demand this book has been prepared. The author has utilized the opportunity when the rural dweller is learning to read to stimulate a livelier and more intelligent interest in such subjects as agriculture, horticulture, good roads, home economics, health and sanitation, and those subjects, which, if taught to him, will make for a richer and happier life on the farm. For illustrations and suggestions the author and publishers desire to express their thanks to the International Harvester Company, The Country Gentleman, The United States Forest Service, Mr. J. E. Barton, State Forester of Kentucky, Mr. Roy French, Prof. G. D. Smith, and Mrs. Cornelia Steketee Hulst. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of a Country Doctor "When a person knows a story that he thinks he ought to tell, If he doesn't get to tell it, why, of course, he don't feel well." - Eugene F. Ware. Every book must have a preface, and so, "yielding to an imperious custom," I write one for mine. The preface usually tells why the author wrote the book; - "there was a demand," "a crying need," "a long felt want," etc., etc. Now, I can scarcely tell why I wrote this book. There were many reasons that impelled me to the task. My friends urged me to write it - friends who had seen me, with my great capacity for enjoyment, gallantly wrestling with poverty year after year and generally getting thrown the "three best in five." They thought I had a fortune within my grasp if I would only put my ideas and my stories into a book. They desired that I should grow rich so that they could borrow my money. I desired to grow rich so that I could refuse them. I can't refuse them so long as I am poor. I found a niche ("a long felt want," you see, reader) which has never been filled by any writer, and so occupied it. I desired to give the world the benefit of what I had learned of humanity in a quarter of a century's practice. We cannot turn, Retrace our steps, however we may yearn; On must we press, though with reluctant feet; Yet as we go we may drop words replete With lofty fancies that within us burn Thoughts that may cheer some mortal 'mid earth's stern Realities - such I would fain repeat.
