By hand-tamping of UF4- Mg blend, tap densities ranging between3.1 and 3.4 g/cc were obtained. The reduction yields for these densities ranged from 72.79 to 93.71%. In the case of machine-compacted UF4-Mg blend having tap densities from 3.58 to 3.68 g/cc, reduction yields were higher, ranging between 91.45 and 97.2%. Machine-compacted blends gave much more uniform temperature distribution curves during the preheating period, as a result of higher tap densities. The best yields were obtained by firing a machine- compacted blend containing 5% Mg excess at a furnace temperature of 650 deg C, giving an average crude metal yield of 96.3%. However, the high carbon content of 174 ppm in the crude uranium biscuits obtained by compacts reduction, as a result of hydrocarbon binder presence, appeared to be a disadvantage. Attempts were also made to demonstrate the initiation of the reduction reaction at temperatures lower than 500 deg C by taking x-ray-diffraction patterns of the samples of the UF4-Mg charges heated up to various temperatures.

Book excerpt: Due to difficulties encountered in the production of calcium metal in adequate quantity and of adequate purity at low cost, it became desirable to replace calcium by a cheaper metal in the production of uranium. Because of the heats of formation of its compounds, its relative stability in air, and its cheapness in high purities, magnesium was the best suited metal for the purpose. Since the heat of reaction of the reduction of UF4 by Mg was not sufficient to melt the products, it was necessary to add heat to the system. This was done in experimental studies both by preheating the reactants before reaction was initiated and by the use of a simultaneous auxiliary reaction producing more heat than the primary reaction. For the latter purpose the reductions of KClO3, K2S2O8 and of other salts by Mg were suitable reactions. The use of 'boosters' or auxiliary oxidants involved extra work and materials, thus increasing costs and offering additional opportunity for contamination, hence the preheating of the reactants was adopted for large scale production.

Book excerpt: A number of techniques have been investigated on a laboratory-scale for separating uranium from fluorides during the recovery of uranium from UF4 reduction bomb wastes (C-oxide) by an HCl leach - NH4OH precipitation process. Among these are included adsorption of fluorides from filtered leach liquors, fractional precipitation of fluorides and uranium, complexing of fluorides into forms soluble in slightly acid solutions, and fluoride volatilization from the uranium concentrate. Solubility studies of CaF2 and MgF2 in aqueous hydrochloric acid at various acidities and temperatures were also conducted. A description of the production-scale processing of C-oxide in the FMPC scrap plant has been included.
