Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenographic study was to: (a) understand how beginning science teachers recruited from various science disciplines and prepared in an Alternative Teacher Certification Program (ATCP) implemented inquiry during their initial years of teaching; (b) describe constraints and needs that these beginning science teachers perceived in implementing inquiry-based science instruction; and (c) understand the relation between what they learned in their ATCP and their practice of teaching science through inquiry. The participants of this study consisted of four ATCP teachers who are in their beginning years of teaching. Semi-structured interviews, classroom observation, field notes, and artifacts used as source of data collection. The beginning science teachers in this study held incomplete views of inquiry. These views of inquiry did not reflect inquiry as described in NRC (2000) - essential features of inquiry, - nor did they reflect views of faculty members involved in teaching science methods courses. Although the participants described themselves as reform-oriented, there were inconsistencies between their views and practices. Their practice of inquiry did not reflect inquiry either as outlined by essential features of inquiry (NRC, 2000) or inquiry as modeled in activities used in their ATCP. The research participants' perceived constraints and needs in their implementation of inquiry-based activities. Their perceived constraints included logistical and student constraints and school culture. The perceived needs included classroom management, pedagogical skills, practical knowledge, discipline, successful grade-specific models of inquiry, and access to a strong support system. Prior professional work experience, models and activities used in the ATCP, and benefits of inquiry to student learning were the declared factors that facilitated the research participants' practice of inquiry-based teaching.

It has, however, been pointed out that education of science teachers still needs much improvement. At the present, there is an emergent need to meet the shortage of qualified science teachers and at the same time to bring qualitative improvements in the courses offered in teacher education institutions. First, we recommend that the 1-year duration of teacher preparation is grossly inadequate for all teaching courses, and should be lengthened, and the qualifications for entrance be increased. We believe that teaching must be made a graduate profession. For example, the basic qualification of primary school teachers for admission to teacher education institution should be increased. We recommend that PTC should be made a 12 + 2 year program. Similarly, CT, 12 + 3; B. Ed. , 14 + 2; B. S. Ed. , 12 + 4; M. A. Ed. , 14 + 3; and M. Ed. one year after B. Ed. or B. S. Ed. Secondly, we think the quality of instruction in teacher preparation programs should be improved. Most teachers in the teacher preparation institutions use the lecture method most of the time. Prospective teachers behave like passive listeners to their teachers. They do not participate in the teaching/ learning process. Some instructors even dictate their notes to the preservice teachers. When the teachers join schools, they behave the same way.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine Conceptions to Teaching Science (CTS) and Orientations to Teaching Science (OTS) of six beginning secondary science teachers. The teacher participants were in their first year of teaching and came from both traditional and alternative certification preparation programs. The study also examined how useful CTS and OTS were to explore beginning teachers thinking about teaching science. Through interviews and classroom observations, participants articulated CTS that were largely teacher centered. Also, some viewed science teaching as transmission of facts, whereas others saw themselves as facilitating students' learning. Participants held OTS which mostly complemented their CTS. Overall, they appeared to hold multiple CTS and OTS simultaneously. These results can be used to design new or modify existing pre-service and in-service teacher professional development programs. Also, this study provides a framework for science teachers combining both the CTS and OTS construct.

This report examines recent programmatic responses to breaking down institutional barriers. In most instances examined, special programs were designed to prepare mathematics and science teachers, and each program was targeted on a specific population such as retired persons, persons changing careers, or recent college graduates. The problems identified underscore the need to move teacher education to the graduate level. Descriptions are given of a number of special teacher preparation programs which are classified into three categories: (1) nontraditional recruitment programs which provide potential teachers from nontraditional pools with course work and other requirements for certification in mathematics or science; (2) alternative certification programs, designed to prepare teachers to meet revised state certification requirements for entering teaching; and (3) retraining programs, designed to help teachers already trained in other fields to obtain endorsement or certification in mathematics or science.
