Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book excerpt: A theoretical model consists of the Reynolds-averaged 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with turbulence incorporated using the algebraic turbulent eddy viscosity model of Baldwin and Lomax, This year research efforts focused on both 2-D and 3-D turbulent interactions. A theoretical model was examined for a series of separated 2-D compression corner flows at Mach 2 and 3. Calculations were performed for four separate compression corners using 2-D compressible Navier-Stodes conde with MacCormack's hybrid algorithm. Results were compared to earlier computations using the Beam-Warming algorithm, and recent experiment data for turbulent Reynolds stresses. Calculated Reynolds stresses were observed to differ significantly from experimental measurements due to the inability of the turbulence model to incorporate the multiple scale effects of the turbulence structure downstream of reattachment. Computed results using the MacCormack hybrid algorithm were observed to be insensitive to the Courant number. The 3-D turbulence interactions research concentrated on the 3-D sharp fin and on the 3-D swept compression corner. In the former case, the computed flowfield for the 20 deg sharp fin at Mach 3 and a Reynolds number of 930,000 was compared with the calculated results of Horstman (who used the Jones-Launder turbulence model) and experimental data of the Princeton Gas Dynamics Lab. Overall comparison with experiment was very good.

Book excerpt: This report discusses the computations of a set of shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction (SWTBLI) test cases using the Wind-US code, as part of the 2010 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) shock/boundary layer interaction workshop. The experiments involve supersonic flows in wind tunnels with a shock generator that directs an oblique shock wave toward the boundary layer along one of the walls of the wind tunnel. The Wind-US calculations utilized structured grid computations performed in Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes mode. Four turbulence models were investigated: the Spalart-Allmaras one-equation model, the Menter Baseline and Shear Stress Transport k-omega two-equation models, and an explicit algebraic stress k-omega formulation. Effects of grid resolution and upwinding scheme were also considered. The results from the CFD calculations are compared to particle image velocimetry (PIV) data from the experiments. As expected, turbulence model effects dominated the accuracy of the solutions with upwinding scheme selection indicating minimal effects. Book excerpt: The focus of the research effort is the understanding of three-dimensional shock wave-turbulent boundary layer interactions. The approach uses the full mean compressible Navier-Stokes equations with turbulence incorporated through the algebraic turbulent eddy viscosity model of Baldwin and Lomax. This year's principle accomplishments are (1) the Baldwin-Lomax model was evaluated for a series of non-separated two-dimensional turbulent boundary layers. (2) the 3-D Navier-Stokes codes was rewritten innto CYBER 200 FORTRAN. (3) the computed results for the 3-D sharp fin alpha sub g = 10 deg were compared with the results of a separate calculation by C. Horstmann using the k-epsilon turbulence model, and the experimental data of McClure and Dolling. and (4) the 3-D sharp fin at alpha sub g =20 deg was computed, and the results compared with the available experimental data. The examination of the flowfield structure of the 3-D sharp fin at alphaa sub g = 20 deg was initiated. This book was released on 2016 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the modeling capabilities of current computational fluid dynamics (CFD), there still exist problems and inconsistencies in simulating fluid flow in certain flow regimes. Most difficult are the high-speed transonic, supersonic and hypersonic wall-bounded turbulent flows with small or massive regions of separation. To address the problem of the lack of computational accuracy in turbulence modeling, NASA has established the Turbulence Modeling Resource (TMR) website and has issued the NASA 40% Challenge. The aim of this challenge is to identify and improve/develop turbulence and transition models as well as numerical techniques to achieve a 40% reduction in the predictive error in computation of benchmark test cases for turbulent flows. One of the phenomena of considerable interest in the 40% Challenge is the shock-wave boundary layer interaction (SWBLI) that occurs on aircraft surfaces at transonic and supersonic speeds and on space vehicles at hypersonic speeds. The correct modeling of shock-waves is complex enough, but the occurrence of SWBLI adds to the complexity by promoting flow separation, heat transfer, and pressure gradients on the surface. SWBLI may occur in both the external and internal flow path of air and space vehicles; therefore, it is important to accurately predict this phenomenon to improve the design of aircraft and space vehicles. The majority of CFD codes utilize the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and employ various turbulence models. The most common among these turbulent models are the one-equation Spalart-Allmaras (SA) model and the two-equation Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-[omega] model. In recent years the CFD community has, in greater number, also started to adopt Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), and hybrid RANS-LES approaches for improving the accuracy of simulations. However currently, solving the RANS equations with eddy-viscosity turbulence models remains the most commonly used simulation technique in industrial applications. In this research, the one-equation Wray-Agarwal (WA), SA, and SST k-[omega] turbulence models are used to simulate supersonic flows in a 2D compression corner at angles of 8° and 16°, a partial axisymmetric flare of 20°, a full-body conical axisymmetric flare of 20°, and an impinging shock over a flat plate at 6°, 10°, and 14°. The ANSYS Fluent and OpenFOAM flow solvers are employed. Inflow boundary conditions and mesh sensitivity are examined to ensure the grid independence of computed solutions. For each of the three turbulence models, heat transfer, surface pressure, skin friction, and velocity profiles are compared with the available experimental data. It is found that the results from the WA model are in similar or better agreement with the experimental data compared to the SA and SST k-[omega] models for the majority of cases considered.

Book excerpt: This research describes continuing efforts in the analysis of 3-D shock wave turbulent boundary layer interactions. A significant research activity in 3-D hypersonic shock turbulent interactions is initiated to further develop and validate the theoretical model. The quasiconical free interaction principle is examined by simulation of two geometries -17.5 deg sharp fin and (30,60) swept compression corner (Mach 3) - selected to obtain similar shock strengths. The comparison with experimental data is good. It is confirmed that the differences caused by the particular geometry of the model appear only behind the inviscid shock wave. Continuing research on 3-D turbulent interaction control is focused on the effect of bleed and the simulation of flows past the double-fin configuration. The effect of suction is examined on a strong (fin angle=20 deg, Mach 3) and a weak interaction (8 deg, Mach 3). The overall effect of bleed is remarkably modest. Two double-fin configurations (4 x 4 and 8 x 8, Mach 3) are simulated. A study of the computed flowfield indicates that the first is a weak interaction. In contrast, the 8 x 8 configuration displays an interesting separated flowfield. An analysis of viscous and inviscid effects in a sharp fin and a swept corner flow indicates that the physics of both geometries are governed primarily by inviscid (pressure) effects. Viscous effects are of lower magnitude but are not restricted to the sublayer region. High speed flows; Viscous inviscid interactions; Boundary layer interactions; Computational fluid dynamics; Navier stokes equations; Turbulence.(mjm).

Book excerpt: This book presents experimental and numerical findings on reducing shock-induced separation by applying transition upstream the shock wave. The purpose is to find out how close to the shock wave the transition should be located in order to obtain favorable turbulent boundary layer interaction. The book shares findings obtained using advanced flow measurement methods and concerning e.g. the transition location, boundary layer characteristics, and the detection of shock wave configurations. It includes a number of experimental case studies and CFD simulations that offer valuable insights into the flow structure. It covers RANS/URANS methods for the experimental test section design, as well as more advanced techniques, such as LES, hybrid methods and DNS for studying the transition and shock wave interaction in detail. The experimental and numerical investigations presented here were conducted by sixteen different partners in the context of the TFAST Project. The general focus is on determining if and how it is possible to improve flow performance in comparison to laminar interaction. The book mainly addresses academics and professionals whose work involves the aerodynamics of internal and external flows, as well as experimentalists working with compressible flows. It will also be of benefit for CFD developers and users, and for students of aviation and propulsion systems alike.

During the present year of the research effort, the three-dimensional shock boundary layer interaction generated by a 10 deg sharp fin has been computed at Mach 3 for a Reynolds number 280000. These results, together with previous computations of the same configuration at Reynolds number = 930000, are compared with experimental data for pitot pressure and yaw angle. The agreement with the experimental data is good, and the theory accurately predicts the recovery of the boundary layer downstream of the interaction of Reynolds number = 280000. The computed flowfield is employed to analyze the structure of the 3-D interaction through contour plots of flow variables. Also, during the present year, the investigation of the 2-D turbulent supersonic compression corner at Mach 3 was completed. The relaxation modification to the Baldwin-Lomax model was found to yield reasonably accurate predictions of the upstream propagation of the surface for the Reynolds number range investigated. An additional computation at Mach 2 was performed, and the results were in general in agreement with the previous conclusions. (Author).

Book excerpt: This research attempts to investigate an important and common phenomenon in aerodynamics called shock interaction in a turbulent flow's boundary layer. Due to advancements in current computational units, more complex geometries could be simulated with providing more accurate results. The tools used in this investigation are computational turbulent model of hybrid RANS/LES, called detached eddy simulation (DES). DES and its variant delayed detached eddy simulation (DDES) were the two computational schemes used for numerical simulation. Two protrusions were focused on in this work: a symmetrical bump and a proposed aircraft UHF antenna. Computation where performed with commercial software Cobalt and FLUENT in the High Performance Computing Center (HiPeCC) in Wichita State University. Computational simulation is costly in terms of energy consumption and time usage. Even so with the advanced computational units of HiPeCC, using in average of 18 processors, total simulation for this research took over 2 months of simulation.
