Book excerpt: This study identified factors related to solving mathematical word problems and then examined the differences in characteristics between students with low achievement in mathematics who were likely to have a learning disability and students with low achievement in mathematics who were unlikely to have a learning disability. Factoral analysis identified two significant factors: abstract thinking and long term retrieval from memory. Results indicated qualitative differences between sixth grade students with achievement in mathematics at or below the 25th percentile with indications of learning disabilities (MLD) and students with achievement in mathematics at or below the 25th percentile without an indication of a learning disability (Low Math/NLD). The Learning Disabilities Diagnostic Inventory, which measures intrinsic processing disorders indicative of learning disabilities, was used to differentiate between students with MLD (n = 13) and students with Low Math/NLD (n = 16). The Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement, Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals-Fourth Edition, and the Informal Mathematics Assessment (IFA) were used to compare the two groups. In contrast to students with MLD, students with Low Math/NLD had a higher mathematical performance and had more difficulties with math fluency. When solving mathematics word problems on the IFA, a test composed of word problems, student interview, and error analysis, students with Low Math/NLD had more correct answers, more computational errors, and fewer translation errors than students with MLD did. Students with MLD had conceptual difficulties in the areas of analyzing, reasoning, and abstract thinking.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the differences in conceptions of variable among the groups of students identified as having a mathematics learning disability (MLD), other low mathematics achievement (LMA) students and typical mathematics achievement (TMA) students. This was done by analyzing the responses of these students on items involving the comparison of expressions involving generalized quantities. The theoretical framework for this study was based upon the learning trajectory (LT) of the levels of sophistication of students' conceptions of variable. Data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics. Results from the data analysis revealed little evidence of differences between MLD and LMA students. Differences between all students with mathematics difficulties (MD), including MLD and LMA students, and their TMA peers were primarily limited to items with higher procedural or operational complexity. The lack of significant differences between the MD and TMA students on other items suggests that most students' conceptions of variables are at a low level of sophistication. Furthermore, that students characterized by low-achievement and typical-achievement labels can have similarly low-levels of sophistication of conceptions of variables suggests that not only do the current measures of achievement provide an incomplete picture of students' understandings of algebra, but they also disproportionately disadvantage those labeled as low-achieving.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this causal-comparative design study was to analyze fourth-grade math achievement of students with educational disabilities in Accelerated Schools Project attendance centers to fourth-grade math achievement of students with educational disabilities in traditional, non-accelerated school programs, in the state of Missouri. The dependent variables for this study were the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) scaled scores and the TerraNova Survey national percentiles. Achievement scores were from the spring of 2000. This study was divided into two major parts. Part A examined Accelerated School Status and Mobility Status (i.e., attendance in the school less than one year; more than one year). These analyses were studied by means of a 2 x 2 ANOVA to determine if mobility status and school type (i.e., Accelerated Schools Project and traditional school) significantly affected MAP and TerraNova Survey scores. Part B examined Educational Disability Types and Disability Type by School Status using a 2 x 5 factorial ANOVA was used to determine if there were significant differences among different educational disability types and school type (i.e., Accelerated Schools Project and traditional school). Part A analyses found a significant main effect on student performance on the MAP scaled scores, favoring traditional schools. While statistically significant, mean differences were quite small. No significant main effects or interactions were found with respect to the TerraNova Survey . Part B analyses results showed a significant main effect for disability type and an interaction between disability type and school type with respect to the MAP scaled score. The TerraNova Survey analysis revealed a significant main effect for disability type, but not a significant interaction of disability type and school type. While post hoc analysis were not conducted in this study, examination of mean scores revealed appreciably lower achievement scores for students with mental retardation on both measures. In addition, it appeared that students with behavioral disorders scored considerably better in traditional schools while students with mental retardation performed better in Accelerated Schools.

Book excerpt: Recent legislation in education mandates that students with disabilities be given access to the general education curriculum in order to reach higher academic standards. To meet these requirements, co-teaching has become a popular service delivery model for instruction of students with disabilities within the general education setting. The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to compare math achievement of secondary students with disabilities in general education co-taught math classes to students with disabilities in special education resource math classes. Participants included 145 high school students with disabilities from four large suburban schools in Northeast Georgia. Learning outcomes were measured by scores on the Georgia Math II End of Course Test. Math I End of Course Test scores from the previous school year were used as a covariate to control for differences in math ability between the groups. Data were analyzed for statistical significance using an ANCOVA. Results indicated that students instructed in co-taught math classes had higher mean scores on end of course tests than students instructed in resource math classes. The findings suggest that co-teaching had a small effect in influencing outcomes in math. Implications for practice indicate that the design of effective teaching practices and instruction are necessary for the attainment of math skills. Future research would help identify important instructional components, teacher experience and training, as well as provide broader generalization of results.
