Further, not much is known on how perceptions of the college campus environment vary by social identity, such as Greek affiliation. This study was a secondary data analysis from a campus climate survey on sexual assault. Participants were 2,782 undergraduate students at Indiana University Bloomington. The present study examined differences between Greek and independent students on beliefs about campus safety, beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence, and bystander intervention confidence. Additionally, the study explored how Greek affiliation and gender influence beliefs about campus safety and beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence on bystander intervention confidence. Among Greek-affiliated students, the study also investigated the impacts of gender and knowledge of campus resources on beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence and bystander intervention confidence. Results indicate that women endorsed lower scores for beliefs about campus safety and beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence than men, and that Greek students reported a higher bystander intervention confidence (BIC) than independent students. Results also suggest that gender moderates the relationship between beliefs about campus safety and bystander intervention confidence. Similarly, gender was shown to moderate the relationship between beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence and bystander intervention confidence in all students and within Greek affiliated students. A discussion of implications, limitations, and future directions for research, prevention, and intervention is included.

Book excerpt: Utilizing a mixed methods design, this research examines the ways in which students' perceptions of safety and danger on the college campus vary and do not vary according to gender through the inclusion of three key components. The first focuses on individual perceptions of safety on campus, along with the ways in which students and other members of the campus community police their behaviors within the university setting to ensure that their personal space is not violated as they navigate to and from classes and campus events. This section relies on data from interviews and focus groups with 24 Mason students and staff, along with data from the observations of two open meetings of the Presidential Task Force during April 2011 which centered on issues regarding campus safety. The second component of this study examines the institutional presentation of safety issues and risks to the university community. This section includes a content analysis of five crime and safety documents released during the 2011-2012 academic year to the campus community from the University Police and administration. The final component consists of a nation-wide assessment of safety on college campuses, relying on the crime and security data from two nationally representative datasets including the Bureau of Justice Statistics' 2004-2005 Survey of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies and the U.S. Department of Education's 2006-2007 Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool. This study builds on previous research on this topic by investigating the gendered (and not gendered) dimensions of fear, in addition to how such fears may operate to restrict women's participation on the university campus and beyond. Further, this research seeks to inform discussions at colleges and universities about how to make students feel safer as they pursue higher education.

Book excerpt: The nexus of social factors, the college experience, and campus safety research represents an empirical gap in the literature surrounding campus safety issues. There is a need for new and creative outlooks on how to approach this culturally sensitive and complex issue(s); a need this research will begin to fulfill. This study intends to ascertain themes regarding the socially constructed reality of campus safety perceptions and concerns, of both male and female students, at a mid-sized Virginia university. A mixed methods procedure was used which included a focus group interview as well as a survey. As Kelly and Torres (2006) wrote, "The perception, just as much as the actual experience was what shaped women students fear for their campus safety" (p. 28), thus it will be the perceptions of the students that will shape their concerns of campus safety. This study will utilize unmatched count technique as the quantitative data collection method and a social constructivist framework to adapt to the sensitive and personal nature of campus safety issues, including sexual assault and interpersonal violence. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data allowed the researcher to determine that students' perceptions could be categorized and defined in a number of ways. There is a clear need for further research on the subject in order to implement culturally appropriate and effective prevention, response and risk reduction strategies.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore areas of research in regards to how students learn about violent crime on university campuses and what level of awareness they hold regarding their personal safety. A combination of databases was used to measure reported rates of violent crime on campus and in the community and these were compared with students' self-perceptions of safety and personal exposure to violence through an online survey distributed to 7,000 students at eight diverse universities throughout the United States. The survey determined that students were more aware of their personal safety than most researchers were giving them credit for. The students were largely dependent upon and trusting in their university to provide them with the information they needed to keep them safe. The university's internal and external communications messages (emails and news media coverage) were a large factor in determining how safe a student felt. Overall, there were few differences in perceptions of safety from demographics (except year of schooling). There was however strong consistencies in perceptions of universities per university, suggesting that the university itself is actually the greatest factor determining students' self-perceptions of safety and that the university's safety perception was largely determined by media coverage. The university proved such a strong factor that it even outweighed a students' personal experience with violence as a key factor in how safe a student felt. I believe that this exploratory study now indicates that future research in the field should focus on universities' safety images and whether or not this is making students feel safe or unsafe.

Victimization studies have beenconducted at large universities and community colleges; however, there remains a lack ofresearch regarding private colleges. This study was designed to examine the reasoningbehind students’ crime-reporting behaviors and the influencers that impact theirdecisions. Cohen and Felson’s routine activity theory along with the collective-efficacytheory were used as frameworks to analyze the crimes that occur to college students aswell as to explore the reasons for not reporting some crimes to law enforcement. Thisresearch utilized archival data from a private (not-for-profit) college in the MidwestUnited States. The data were analyzed through coding and thematic development,supported by secondary coding review and member checks. Concepts explored throughthis study included examining students’ perceptions on their likelihood of reporting crimeand victimization as well as students’ feelings of safety while at college. Results showedthat students voiced consistent beliefs that their peers were likely to report crime andseveral factors influenced the reporting of crimes or victimization by students. Findingsalso showed that students felt generally safe while attending college but expressed a needfor improved safety systems on the campus. These findings draw no definitiveconclusions about why students choose to not report crime but do promote social changeby helping administrators develop policies that collaboratively engage students, lawenforcement, and campus officials with crime reporting and education programs toreduce the underreporting of crime and victimization.

A dynamic environment including regulatory changes and notable criminal incidents has resulted in rapid changes in campus policy in the United States. Limited research has been conducted regarding stakeholder perceptions of campus safety, though research is lacking regarding campus safety in Christian higher education. Research is especially lacking among Christian institutions in the southeastern United States and in comparing student perceptions based on class standing. This causal-comparative study examined the results of a survey presented to undergraduate students at a Christian university to answer the question as to whether there are differences in student perceptions of campus safety based on class standing and gender. The adapted Perceptions of College Safety and Security scale was sent to undergraduate students at a suburban Christian university in upstate South Carolina. The survey results were compared via ANOVA based on class standing and again based on gender. The instrument as a whole showed no significant difference between students based on either gender or class standing, leading to a failure to reject the null hypothesis. Individual questions did show significant differences, leading to further discussion and recommendations for future research. Opportunities for future research including comparing student differences in perceptions of campus safety by comparing differences between students attending various Christian institutions in a variety of setting, comparisons of perceptions based on hometown or geographic region, perceptions of students during the college decision-making process, longitudinal studies, and comparisons of perceptions between different types of stakeholders (e.g. parents and students).

While research investigating sexual attitudes and behaviors of college students dates back decades, it was not until about the year 2000 that studies addressing hooking up or a 'hook up culture' on college campuses began being published (Stinson, 2010). 'Hooking up' is not a new term. Much of the research that currently exists asserts that the ambiguity of the phrase 'hooking up' is part of the reason for its popularity (Glenn and Marquardt, 2001). The use of alcohol appears to be common in most, if not all, studies related to college students and hooking up. According to Kimmel (2008), virtually all hooking up is paired with copious amounts of alcohol, oftentimes, more alcohol than sex. When considering a college students' use of alcohol, one should consider that gender as well as campus norms play a very powerful role in the decisions that students make. Additionally, a gap appears to exist in the current literature about Panhellenic sorority women and how they navigate a social scene with easy accessibility to alcohol as well as hooking up. For the purposes of this study, the researcher was interested in what Panhellenic sorority women's experiences and perceptions of risk are in the context of hooking up and using alcohol on North University's campus"--Leaf v.
