Critical thinking skills can be developed with practice. Nurse educators are obligated to create learning environments that support critical thinking. Not only is it important what students learn, but equally important is how they learn. Traditional teaching methods should be transformed to improve learning experiences and facilitate lifelong learning. There is a lack of evidence of consistent teaching methods among nurse educators. Nursing graduates with an associate degree outnumber those with a bachelor's degree but overall do not perform as well on the nurse licensure exam as baccalaureate graduates. The purpose of this dissertation research was to examine which teaching methods community college associate degree nurse (ADN) educators in a southern state were utilizing in the classroom to enhance student learning and develop critical thinking in nursing students enrolled in fundamentals and/or medical-surgical nursing courses. The researcher sought to answer six research questions: 1) What teaching strategies are community college associate degree nurse educators who teach fundamentals and medical-surgical nursing courses using in the classroom to enhance student learning and develop critical thinking? 2) What barriers are encountered when utilizing ALS in the nursing classroom? 3) What are the perceived benefits of utilizing ALS in the nursing classroom? 4) Is there a difference in the frequency of utilization of teaching strategies that involve experience by "doing" and experience by "observing"? 5) Is there a difference in the frequency of utilization of teaching strategies that involve dialogue with "self" and dialogue with "others"? 6) What is the perceived effectiveness of teaching strategies used by associate degree nurse educators in the classroom to enhance student learning and develop critical thinking?

Nurses may be trained in two-, three-, or four-year programs, but all are eligible to take the accreditation examination to be licensed as registered nurses (RNs). The question of distinguishing between "professional" nurses from bachelor programs and "technical" nurses from the associate degree programs has become an important and controversial issue in nursing. Advocates have long contended that the associate degree nurse is vital to the American health care system. This study, funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, confirms this view. In recent years the Foundation has invested more than $6.1 million in the development of the ADN, awarded by junior and community colleges. Many participants in the ADN projects for the Kellogg Foundation have noted that, despite the importance of the ADN and the controversy about its place in nursing education, the literature is scattered and hard to identity. The Origins and Rise of Associate Degree Nursing Education and the companion bibliography will provide much-needed information to educators, hospital and nursing administrators, nursing leaders, and public policy makers--all of whom must cope with the growing nursing shortage and increasingly difficult issues in health policy and administration.

Book excerpt: Faced with faculty shortages as well as limited time in the classroom, nurse educators are often forced to do more with less in the classroom. Alternate content delivery methods, including frontloading of materials as well as implementation of technology both in and out of the classroom may be ways to overcome limited time and resources. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between implementation of a video based assessment demonstration for cardiovascular assessment and faculty and student satisfaction with two teaching methods, live versus video assessment demonstration. Further, this study explored the perceived self-efficacy of students, and faculty perception of time in the skills lab. Results indicated both faculty and students were satisfied with the video assessment demonstration and found both the live and video demonstrations helpful. Students who viewed the video assessment demonstration reported higher confidence during final instructor check off for cardiovascular assessment when compared with students who did not view the video. Implementation of the video may lead to a more prepared learner and save on time within the classroom, leading to more one on one time between faculty and students. Information reported therefore has potential to influence practices of nursing faculty and provide alternatives to face to face instruction.
