A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this project was to compare the academic performance of high school athletes vs. non-athletes using grade point average and ACT scores. Using information from the Kansas State Department of Education, as well as the Kansas State High School Activities Association, provides some answers to the following questions. "Is there a significant difference in the grade point averages of high school athletes vs. non-athletes?" "Is there a significant difference in ACT scores between high school athletes vs. non-athletes?" Using statistical software, a t-test was used to challenge the null hypothesis. Findings from the study indicated that there was a significant difference in grade point average and ACT scores between athletes and non-athletes. Among the 5,017 male athletes, 74% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and 43% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Of the 3,674 male non-athletes, only 64% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and only 34% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Among the 4,330 female athletes, 87% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and 62% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Of the 5,547 female non-athletes, only 75% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and only 44% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. In looking at ACT composite scores, athletes averaged a score of 22.94, while non-athletes averaged a score of 21.81."

For example, "redshirting" occurs when a school has an athlete sit out a year so that the athlete can mature physically and have four years of eligiblity. This problem exists in the secondary grades as well as in colleges. The ramifications of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Proposition 48 are discussed as they have an impact on students at both high school and college level. The legal aspects of "No Pass No Play" policies in Texas and other areas are discussed. Recommendations are made for higher academic requirements for talented student athletes. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT The purpose of this case study was to investigate the relationship between participation in high school athletics and the performance at a local Christian high school in three specific areas, grades, behavior, and physical activity. This research is intended to provide a better understanding of the relationship between high school athletes and non-athletes. The findings in this case study statically demonstrated that there was a positive relationship between interscholastic sports participation and academic performance in each of these three areas. Through independent two samples t-test analysis of 287 ninth through twelfth-grade students at a local Christian high school, it was determined that the students who participated in interscholastic sports had higher grade point averages (GPA), fewer discipline points, and greater physical activity. Microsoft Excel and Minitab Express, a statistical program, was used to analyze the data that was provided by the Christian high school. An interesting finding was that females had fewer discipline points whether they participated in interscholastic athletics or not. Based on the research conducted it is clear that athletes outperform their non-athlete counterparts in all three areas. In a time when schools are being forced to cut so-called unessential programs and services, it is recommended that policy considerations be made for local funding to include extracurricular sports as a viable method to increase student performance.

Four Michigan schools participated in the study. Quantitative data were gathered on 349 students in grade 12 from the four schools for the 2000-01 school year. The grade point averages of the athletes and non-athletes were compared. The results of this study led to the conclusion that the High School Seniors who participated in interscholastic athletics in the four Michigan schools surveyed in this study outperformed their non-athlete counterparts when comparing mean GPA scores. This finding was consistent with the related literature on other studies when mean GPA was compared."--Abstract.
