Power output (PO), heart rate (HR), and Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) were measured during each ride. Results: The results found no significant differences in PO with FM, P, and B (p=0.236). Therefore, finding ways to increase physical activity is a popular area of research. Researchers have found that using dissociative attentional strategies is effective in increasing physical activity. According to research, when administered individually music and video (dissociative strategies) are both effective in decreasing an individual's perceived exertion and increasing performance at low to moderate intensity activity. However, at vigorous intensities the results are less consistent. The potential effects of music and video presented simultaneously have not been compared to the effects of either in isolation. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in attentional focus and perceived exertion during vigorous intensity exercise as a function of being exposed to music, video, both (music and video), or nothing. Results showed that at vigorous intensity, participants in the condition that received both music and video perceived significantly lower exertion (RPE) and has a significantly more dissociative focus than did participants in the other three conditions. There was no significant difference amongst the other conditions. It was concluded that even at vigorous intensity exercise, a participant could use music and video to enhance their use of dissociative strategies and to perceive less exertion. Whether music is playing over the loudspeakers, or individuals are listening to their iPods, music is a vital part of exercise for many individuals. With so much emphasis on listening to music during physical activity the question arises, "What makes music such a popular component of exercise?" Many studies have assessed the effects of music on exercise (Elliott, 2007; Karageorghis, 1999; Karageorghis & Priest, 2008; Kravitz, 1994; Matesic & Cromartie, 2002). These studies indicate that music has positive effects of lowering heart rate, decreasing rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and providing an overall escape from the discomfort of exercise. Most of these studies have assessed how music tempo and music preference affect exercise enjoyment; however, few studies have assessed the effect of genre on the psychological traits listed above. Some studies suggest that the effects of music during exercise are decreased heart rate, slowed oxygen intake and lowered RPE (Elliott, 2007; Karageorghis, 1999; Karageorghis & Priest, 2008; Kravitz, 1994; Matesic & Cromartie, 2002). These effects are beneficial, especially as they may allow individuals to exercise harder and longer. The purpose of this study is to discover whether there is a relationship between RPE and music genre during exercise, and what that relationship is.--P. 1.

Specifically, listening to music during exercise enhances performance, increases motivation, improves affect, and optimizes arousal. Researchers have identified several elements of music that may moderate this relationship, including lyrics. However, few studies to date have examined the influence of motivational lyrics on psychological and physiological states during exercise. Thus, the primary purpose was to investigate the effects of lyrics in music on motivation, affect, arousal, and perceived exertion during moderate intensity cycling. Thirty (Mage = 21.0 ± 2.9 years old) college-aged individuals performed three, 8-min acute bouts of moderate-intensity exercise on a cycle ergometer during music with lyrics (ML), music without lyrics (MNL), and no music control (MC) conditions. Measures of motivation, affect, arousal, and perceived exertion were taken before and after a 6-min warm-up, every 2-min during the exercise bout, and following a 2-min cool-down. For ML and MNL conditions, participants reported higher motivation, affect, and arousal during exercise relative to the MC condition. As expected, RPE increased throughout the exercise period, with no condition differences observed. Additionally, there were no differences in responses between the ML and MNL conditions. Collectively, these results suggest that music, regardless of lyrical content, can enhance psychological responses during exercise. The current findings may help address common exercise barriers and inform exercise practitioners on music selection to improve exercise adherence.

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of musical genre on power output during supra-maximal exercise testing. METHODS: Three genres of music (rock, dance and rap) all of similar tempo (120-155 beats per minute) were played during a supra-maximal exercise test (Wingate test). The Wingate test consisted of pedaling on a cycle ergometer as fast as possible for 30 seconds at a resistance determined from body mass. Peak anaerobic power (Pk-AnP), Fatigue Index (FI), and Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) were determined during the Wingate test. All genres were compared to a no music (CON) condition. RESULTS: A repeated measures analysis of variance (repeated-measures ANOVA) was performed to determine differences between music genres on power output. There was a difference between CON and each genre, but no differences in peak anaerobic power were seen between genres. CONCLUSION: Wingate peak anaerobic performance appears to be influenced more by the presence of music rather than the genre.

The subjects were 14 male (x age=20.4 + 1.9yr; x ht=173.8 + 8.5cm; x wt=78.5 + 12. Skg) and 12 female (x age=19.3 + 2.3yr; x ht=163.8 + 6.0cm; x wt=60.0 + 6.8kg) Springfield College students. Subjects cycled at 70 rpm at a predetermined workload until they were unable to maintain the cycling speed for a consecutive 15 second period. Heart rate and RPE were recorded every 3 min. Subjects were tested under two conditions, with music and without. Order of testing condition was randomly assigned. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant increase in time to exhaustion for males and females during the music condition. A Tukey's post hoc test revealed that the males endured longer than females during both conditions. A second ANOVA showed significantly lower 3 min RPE values for males as compared to females, but no difference between the music and no music conditions. A Tukey's post hoc test revealed that lower 3 min RPE values for males occurred in both conditions. Final RPE means did not differ between condition or gender. We concluded that listening to music while exercising prolongs a subject's time to exhaustion. While subjects rated their final RPE similarly with or without music, they cycled twice as long during the music condition and achieved their final RPE at a later time. The use of music is recommended as an aid in rehabilitation settings to enhance subject motivation and endurance performance.

Experimenter-selected music and subject's self-selected music was additionally examined to assess any significant differences in exercise exertion perception and enjoyment. Subjects exercised to three conditions while performing a maximum graded exercise test on a treadmill. The three conditions were experimenter-selected music, self-selected music, and a control of no music. Borg's Rating of Perceived Exertion along with other subjective exercise variables were obtained during data collection. Results showed that there was a difference in preference to the music selection. Subject's overwhelmingly preferred their own songs to the experimenter-selected songs, which contributed to a distinct separation of music conditions. However, this did not yield any significant results in perceived exertion levels or exercise enjoyment. This study showed that when subjects perform a mzximum graded exercise test, music has no effect on ratings of perceived exertion, exercise enjoyment, or post exercise feelings.
