Book Synopsis Cooperative Learning and the Collaborative School by : Ronald S. Brandt
Download or read book Cooperative Learning and the Collaborative School written by Ronald S. Brandt and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperation in the classroom counteracts well-established routines and values that nearly all adults and many educators take for granted. Education remains a fiercely competitive enterprise, and individualistic notions of professionalism predominate. Despite the continued importance of independence, initiative, and personal achievement, today's schools are experimenting with consideration, sharing, collegiality, and commitment to group goals. This volume contains readings from recent editions of "Educational Leadership" on cooperative learning and collaborative schools, beginning with Robert Slavin's introduction and Ronald Brandt's insistence that cooperation is not un-American. The articles in the second section discuss various cooperative learning models, including Team Assisted Individuation, Cooperative integrated Reading and Composition, and Group Investigation. The third section is devoted to implementation of cooperative learning, and the fourth section highlights the idea of schools as caring communities developed through group work. The sixth section provides ideas on how to get started, and the seventh section summarizes controversies among various researchers. The final section presents articles on the collaborative school, focusing on developing teacher collegiality, cooperative professional development, and school improvement efforts. The volume ends with an extensive annotated bibliography divided into nine parts. (MLH)

Book excerpt: This text's reputation for an impeccable research base and current, relevant references is complemented in this new edition by an easy narrative style that grabs student interest and attention and an increased coverage of practical classroom practice issues and depiction of the personal, human side of learning disabilities. The text helps future teachers access the latest research and theory in an easily understood way, so the "big picture" is clear and they can confidently apply these concepts in their daily clinical teaching decisions. With more than 60 real-life vignettes, numerous LD simulations, and extensive illustrations of student work, the Fifth Edition helps future teachers understand the progression of learning, development, and social skills in the average student, how and why the patterns of the learning disabled differ, and why not all methods work for all children. Sensitized to family and school learning expectations and interaction patterns that can promote learning, future teachers learn how to match their interventions to each student's unique strength and weakness patterns in a way that is culturally affirming, takes advantage of instructional methods and technology that work, and promotes the skill set and social-emotional adjustment that will facilitate a student's transition to adult life.

Book Synopsis Groups in Contact by : Norman S. Miller
Download or read book Groups in Contact written by Norman S. Miller and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groups in Contact: The Psychology of Desegregation uses the contact hypothesis as a point of departure and provides new data obtained in a variety of social contexts. The contact hypothesis states that attitudes toward a disliked social group will become more positive with increased interpersonal interaction. The various chapters provide a picture of the desegregation process as a complex interplay between the cognitive processes within the individual and the structural features of the social environment. What emerges is an expanded theory of contact based on social categorization and social comparison processes. The book is organized into three parts. The chapters in Part I deal with issues of intergroup contact in a wide range of cultures and settings, each focusing on a particular social or political factor that influences receptivity to intergroup interaction and affects its outcomes. The chapters in Part II review the effects of specific interventions that have been introduced into desegregation settings with the intent of improving intergroup acceptance in those settings. Part III provides a systematic integration of the preceding chapters within a common theoretical framework. Although this book is written primarily from the perspective of social psychology, it is intended for students of intergroup relations in all disciplines. It was also written with policymakers, as well as social science researchers, in mind.
