Book excerpt: Since 2000, the number of students transferring from United States community colleges to four-year institutions has steadily increased. As a result, growing attention has been paid to community college students' academic performance following their transfer. Research conducted in the United States has reported mixed results regarding transfer students' academic performance in four-year institutions. Similar to the United States, many college students in Ecuador transfer to different types of postsecondary institutions. However, no research has been published on this experience in Ecuador that can inform educators and support transfer students' academic performance after transferring. To fill this gap, this study investigated the characteristics and academic success of community college students who transferred to a four-year institution in Ecuador. In particular, this study used secondary data to compare characteristics and academic performance (i.e., GPA) between transfer and non-transfer students attending a small private four-year university in Ecuador between Fall 2008 and Fall 2013. Results from mixed-effects models showed that transfer students had a higher average GPA after one semester (intercept) than non-transfer students; however, no difference in the average change in GPA over the years (slope) was found between transfer and non-transfer students. Further analysis examining gender differences in the average GPA after the first semester (intercept) showed that transfer females performed significantly better than males. It was also found that the area or program of study was a significant predictor explaining some of the variation in the average GPA after the first semester (intercept). For example, students in engineering programs had the lowest average GPA across the years. This suggests that extra attention and academic assistance might be necessary for these students entering to engineering program of study. In addition, significant differences in the average GPA after the first semester (intercept) were found depending on the quality of the community college that students transferred from. This result suggests that universities should design their marketing strategies and admission resources that recruit students from category A and B institutes of technology and universities, which can be further facilitated by subscribing articulation agreements with these institutions to allow prospect transfer students to transfer a great majority of their credit hours. The current study shows, that transfer students are capable of being academically successful at four-year institutions. It further suggests that recruitment efforts aimed at community college transfer students should target students based on their transferring GPA and the quality of the transferring institution; while for non-transfer students on the basis of high school GPA. It is hoped that this study would help Ecuadorian authorities and institutional officers at all levels more effectively facilitate student mobility between the country's institutes of technology and its universities, and encourage more in-depth research on transfer students so that their academic potential becomes a reality.

The study takes into account the influence of such factors as age, gender and race on academic success. Students were randomly selected from data compiled by the University's Office of Planning and Institutional Research, using purposeful sampling selected from students who were enrolled at the senior institution between fall semester 2000 and fall semester 2003. Of the total number of students, 90 were nontransfer students and 54 were transfer students. A two-year pertinent aspect of the study was grade point average of both groups of students. The hypothesis of this study is that there is no significant difference in success between nontransfer college students enrolled at Morgan State University and student transfers from community colleges enrolled at Morgan State University after one year of study. The null hypotheses were tested at alpha .05 level of significance. These null hypotheses would either reject or fail to reject the contention that there is a difference in the academic performance when comparing the third year grade point average performance of the nontransfer college students and the community college transfer students. The ex post facto research design utilized the t-test to compare the transfers and nontransfers with the grade point average; testing the null hypotheses, i.e. the statistical significance of the mean GPA, for transfer students. Cross-tabulation and Chi Square statistical tests were used to test the hypotheses for age and gender of the transfer and nontransfer groups. -- Abstract.

The relationship between community college students and their performance at four year institutions has been researched by numerous researchers (Carlan & Byxbe, 2000; Cejda, 1994; Cohen, 1998; Hill, 1965; Graham & Hughes, 1994; Montondon & Elkner, 1997). Banks (1990) has written that the founders of junior colleges believed the success of their transfer mission could be gauged by the success of their students at the four-year institution. Current research was highly focused on transfer students as they moved from community colleges to public four-year institutions. Inadequate research was available to assist independent colleges and universities in working with transfer students. Sixteen hundred independent colleges and universities have enrolled more than 3.1 million students, a critical number of students needing focused and specialized research on transfer (National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, 2005). This causal comparative study examined a cohort of students who transferred into a private four-year institution. The study was comprised of native and transfer students who entered a private urban university, Fall, 1999, and examined their academic success outcomes six years later (May, 2005). The purpose of this study was to understand and describe the extent to which native and transfer students differ in their academic success in a private urban university. The study found no statistically significant differences in the academic success (grade point average, retention rate, graduation rate) of transfer and native students based on transfer status, classification, age, gender or transfer institution type. No statistically significant differences were found in the grade point averages and retention rates of transfer and native students based on enrollment status. However, full-time transfer and native students had a statistically higher graduation rate than part-time students. Implications for future practice and recommendations for further research are provided by the study. -- Abstract.

The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive update and to determine if there were differences in the academic performance of North Carolina native students and North Carolina community college transfer students who began their higher education matriculation at selected community colleges in North Carolina and then transferred to state universities in the same state. Using secondary data from statewide databases of student records with information on North Carolina community colleges and University of North Carolina institutions, this study investigated and analyzed data on academic performance as measured by grade point averages and average credit hours attempted for each year under study. The findings from this study indicated that North Carolina community college transfer students who completed the requirements for associate degrees from the college transfer curriculum performed as well as native juniors as measured by grade point averages. However, the native students attempted more credit hours during their matriculation at the state universities than did their community college transfer counterparts.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Florida's undergraduate organization of higher education is a 2 + 2 system in which students are encouraged to complete freshmen and sophomore years at a community college and then transfer to a state university. Florida statutes provide for a highly articulated educational system to facilitate seamless transition from one public institution to another. The researcher investigated the transfer function's effectiveness among community college students subsequent to enrollment at a large, urban, doctoral/research extensive university in Florida using a course-based model of transfer success. The research explored whether differences existed in academic performance in targeted upper-division undergraduate courses between native and Florida Community College System (FCCS) transfer students who completed prerequisite courses prior to transferring to the university. Four upper-division courses were chosen specifically because many transfer students complete prerequisite coursework at a community college prior to matriculating at the university. A total of 764 native students and 1,053 FCCS transfer students were enrolled in at least one course of interest in fall 2002. Preliminary investigation of selected demographic characteristics identified statistically significant differences between these two groups. Native students were younger and more racially/ethnically diverse; more native students were enrolled full time (for 12 or more credits) than transfer students. Although first-term transfer students experienced transfer shock, university native students who were enrolled in three courses also experienced declines in fall 2002 GPA when compared to their previous GPA at the university. Statistically significant mean grade differences occurred between transfer and native students in three courses; transfers outperformed native students in two courses. Additional comparisons of fall 2002 term GPA between native and transfer students yielded no significant differences. Findings lend support to the effectiveness of Florida's community colleges in preparing students for upper-division undergraduate coursework, but that transition for some is not seamless, suggesting need for collaboration among universities and community colleges.

Two groups of students were selected for observation. The first included all of the 116 full-time students who transferred from Oregon community colleges with 39 or more units of collegiate work and were admitted to Oregon State University from the fall quarter 1963 through the fall quarter 1964. The second group included 116 full-time native students who were currently enrolled at Oregon State University. Each native student was selected at random to match one of the transfer students by school, age, sex, marital status, and number of units completed. Original data were obtained by surveying student records. Grade-point averages were collected at various time intervals. To evaluate persistence and graduation, students were classified as enrolled, withdrawn, dismissed, or graduated. The percentage of students in each classification was tabulated at various time intervals. Comparisons of grade-point average were made by t tests. Within the transfer group, evaluations were made for sub-groups established on the basis of school, age, sex, marital status, and class standing. The same subgroup evaluations were made within the native group. Comparisons of grade-point average also were made between the transfer and native groups as a whole and as subgroups. The academic classifications of the total transfer group were compared with those of the native group by chi-square tests. Comparisons for transfer and native subgroups were made by percentages. The findings of this investigation are summarized in three subdivisions: transfer shock, academic achievement, persistence and graduation. Transfer shock. Acute transfer shock was observed for transfer students. Recovery was slow, and grade-point averages generally did not return to their original level until graduation. The dropout rate was extremely high for the first year after transfer and included a large number of dismissals. Students in all schools suffered transfer shock and a considerable loss of grade-points. Large dropout rates for the first year were noted in most schools. Transfer shock was most noticable for the following subgroups: students enrolled in the School of Engineering, young students in the 19 to 21 age group, males, and single students. Academic achievement. When observations began and upon receipt of the baccalaureate degree there was no significant difference between the grade-point averages of transfer and native students. However, when comparing the cumulative grades for the total collegiate work of dropouts as well as graduates, the grade average of transfer students was significantly lower than that of native students. This was attributed to the loss of grade-point average associated with transfer shock. At graduation there was no significant difference between native and transfer students in any subgroup. For total collegiate work, native engineering students averaged much higher than transfer engineering students, and native males averaged higher than transfer males. Youngest native students had a higher average than youngest transfers; native juniors were higher than transfer juniors; single natives averaged much higher than single transfers, but there was no significant difference between married groups. Persistence and graduation. When transfer students were compared with native students, the persistence and graduation rates of native students were found to be significantly higher than those of transfer students at all time intervals. Dropouts from either group seldom occurred between the fourth and fifth year of collegiate work. Graduation rates for both groups increased greatly when students were given an additional year to complete degree requirements, but the largest gain was observed for transfer students. The persistence and graduation rates for native subgroups were much higher than those for corresponding transfer subgroups except in the School of Science and for students above 26 years of age. Transfer dropouts included a higher percentage of dismissals than native dropouts.

This comparative study aimed to explore and explain adjustment of community college transfer students who began in the fall and mid-year terms at a large, public, Midwestern, four-year university. Similar to others, this university admits nearly one in four of its community college transfer students in the spring semester (institutional data, 2006). Tinto (1993) regards the adjustment process as the first step of students becoming integrated in the university community and integration is known as a predictor positively associated with student persistence. Prior research indicates that students experience difficulty adjusting after transferring, which can influence their persistence and success (Laanan, 2001). Responses from 373 community college transfer students indicated that the adjustment to the research site produced several significant relationships between adjustment and the term transferred. Of most interest, mid-year students were less aware of institutional resources to aid in the transition and experienced a more difficult social adjustment, particularly because they did not attend or find campus activities they attended as helpful. To gain further insight additional data were collected from small group interviews and open-ended responses on the survey, which produced 569 statements that were cluster coded (Miles & Huberman, 1994) into 32 clusters of the three primary categories of adjustment (social, academic, and personal).. These data suggested there were distinct differences largely in the social and personal adjustment categories between fall and mid-year transfer students. A cluster that emerged was term of entry, indicating mid-year transfer students did perceive their adjustment as harder than experienced by students who started in the fall. This study contributes to the literature on community college transfer student adjustment and increases awareness about how time of transfer influences that adjustment process.
