Book excerpt: This study analyzed the impact of professional development on student achievement in eastern North Carolina high schools. The high schools studied were consistent in their student enrollment, teacher staff size, and socieo-economic status. For the purposes of this research, the characteristics of effective professional development were categorized into two types: the reform model and the traditional model (Garet, Porter, Desimone, Birman, & Yoon, 2001). Two of the schools used the traditional model of professional development while one high school used the reform model. Student achievement data were analyzed for five end of course tests: Algebra I, Biology, Civics, English 9, and U.S. History, over a three year period to draw conclusions on the impact of the professional development on student achievement. Also, a staff survey was administered to supplement the quantitative data to gauge the effectiveness of the professional development from the perceptions of the staff members. For this study, the student achievement data were analyzed over a three year period to determine if specific teacher professional development impacted student achievement based on the North Carolina Testing and Accountability model, (ABC's), the pattern of growth for the federal Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) Target Goals by subgroup based on Reading and Math test scores, and the rate at which the subgroup scores closed towards the AYP target goals. Also, a survey was administered to gauge teacher perceptions of the impact of professional development on student achievement. The researcher highlighted those areas of difference between the staffs of the two models and highlighted the most significant responses from each model implemented. Results of this study were inconclusive. The pattern of student growth for the NC testing model and the AYP testing model showed no significant pattern of influence for either model implemented. The qualitative data were more conclusive as the teachers implementing the reform method of professional development reported more favorable results. The study of professional development and the link to student achievement is difficult to determine and needs further research.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comparative Study of Achievement in Country and Town Schools In A Report on the Use of Some Standard Tests, Wisconsin State Department of Public Instruction Studies in Educational Measure ments in Wisconsin, Bulletin No. 1, W. W. Theisen reports results for children in Wisconsin, of whom were in rural schools. He summarizes on page 22 as follows Judged by the Ayres stand ards, rural children in Wisconsin do not spell well. They average not less than 10 points below the standard in every grade. However, when compared with other classes of Wisconsin schools, as will be seen from Table 1, they are not conspicuously poorer nor better spell ers than the pupils in the cities and villages. The same author in the same report gives results of penmanship scored according to the Thorndike Handwriting Scale from 141 rural schools in 28 counties. He summarizes (p. 85) Rural schools on the whole make the best showing of Wisconsin schools in writing. Their quality is not inferior to that of other classes of schools, and their speed is more nearly in accord with desirable standards in most grades. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if any relationship existed between the change in developmental scale scores (DSS) on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) for reading and mathematics, in selected Florida school districts among charter and non-charter public high schools, for grades 9 and 10. This study also investigated if any relationship existed in student achievement based on student demographics (gender, economically disadvantaged, primary home language (ELL) and ethnicity), and examined if there was a difference in professional demographics of faculty (advanced degrees, teachers' average years of teaching experience, and percent of courses taught by out of field teachers gender), among charter and non-charter public high schools in the state of Florida. School data were analyzed from 234 charter and non-charter public high schools, within 15 districts across the state of Florida, for the years 2007-2009. The findings of this research suggest charter high schools in the state of Florida are not keeping the pace with their traditional public high school counterparts. Over a three year period, charter high schools had significantly lower developmental scale scores on the FCAT, in both reading and mathematics, than non-charter public high schools. The findings also suggest that student demographics, with respect to male gender, economically disadvantaged, and ELL, combined with charter school status, negatively impact student achievement as measured by DSS. The disparity noted with regard to faculty demographics between charter and non-charter public high schools, only touches on some considerable differences between the two school types; more information is needed on the variations so parents and students can make informed choices. For future research, replication of this study with an expanded sample size of charter schools and a longer period of time for data collection was recommended. Separate studies are recommended on the differences between charter and non-charter public schools with regard to instructional time, curriculum or grade levels offered, the differences between parent and student perceptions, and the differences between funding and principal background as it relates to student achievement.

Book excerpt: Purpose The purpose of this journal-ready dissertation was to determine the relationship of high school size with the academic achievement (id est, reading and mathematics) of English Language Learners enrolled in Texas high schools. In the first journal article, the relationship of high school size and student achievement as function of poverty for English Language Learners was determined. In the second study, the extent to which high school size was related to the academic achievement of English Language Learners by their ethnicity/race was ascertained. Finally, in the third empirical investigation, the relationship between high school size and the academic achievement of English Language Learner boys and girls was examined. Each of these empirical investigations had two years of statewide public school data analyzed. This 2-year analysis of data permitted a determination of the degree to which trends were present in the relationship of high school size with the academic achievement of English Language Learners as a function of their economic status, ethnicity/race, and gender. Method A causal-comparative research design (Johnson and Christensen, 2014) was used for this quantitative study. Previously obtained archival data from the Texas Education Agency Public Education Information Management System for the 2008-2009 and the 2009-2010 school years were utilized. The independent variable in this research study was student enrollment at the high school level in which the University Interscholastic League (2013) conference cutoff numbers for the State of Texas were used to determine school sizes. Findings Statistically significant results were present for a majority of the analyses, with English Language Learners who were enrolled in Large-size high schools having statistically significant better results than English Language Learners who were enrolled in Small-size high schools. The lowest performance in reading and mathematics was present for English Language Learners who were enrolled in Small-size schools. Effect sizes ranged from small to large. Results from this study were congruent with much of the empirical literature. Academic achievement was better for English Language Learners enrolled in Large-size high schools than for English Language Learners in Small-size high schools Implications for policy and recommendations for research were provided.
