Book excerpt: The two part purpose of this study is to first test whether perceived collective efficacy is positively significantly related to student achievement in select Texas suburban elementary schools. The second part is to determine which of three collective efficacy belief measures has the greatest predictive validity. Collective efficacy beliefs are grounded in social cognitive theory which explains a group̕ s belief in its capability to attain desired effects. Collective efficacy beliefs can influence the effort a group puts forth to achieve desired effects. In the context of education, a highly efficacious faculty that collaborates and works hard on a daily basis is likely to overcome arduous obstacles and achieve high levels of student success. Five districts participated and 100 schools were sampled in this study. However, due to missing data, only 97 schools were included in this study. Teacher respondents varied in age, ethnicity and experience within the five districts included in the sample. For test of predictive validity, student level data was also used, which included student level characteristics as well as 4th and 5th grade reading and math Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) scores representing student achievement. Factor and reliability analyses were used to create the Collective Efficacy Scale Short Form (CES-Short Form) and the Collective Teacher Belief Scale (CTBS). Both measures have been utilized for over a decade and the results were aligned with past studies. The third measure of collective efficacy was developed by Bandura who pioneered the field of efficacy belief research. A partial correlation was conducted to find the unique variance in student achievement that was explained by each measure. Of the three measures, the CES-Short Form explained more variance in math and reading achievement when accounting for the other two measures while maintaining significant results (p = 0.01). Further tests using multilevel analysis were consistent with these findings, specifically the CES-Short Form had the strongest relationship with achievement and the Bandura measure was not significantly related to reading and math achievement in multilevel models with controls for student and school characteristics. The results confirmed that perceived collective efficacy was a positive predictor of student achievement in select Texas suburban elementary schools with the CES-Short Form having greater predictive validity than the other two measures. Implications of this study for future research are discussed on collective efficacy beliefs in schools. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the collective efficacy of teachers at Heritage Middle School in the East Central Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas, and to determine the relationship between selected demographic variables and the teachers' collective efficacy. The variables included teachers' ethnicity, gender, years of teaching at Heritage Middle School in the East Central Independent School District, total years of teaching, and highest degree earned. The researcher used the collective efficacy survey short form instrument developed by Roger D. Goddard to assess the campus's collective efficacy survey. Answers to the following questions were sought in this study. The first question studied was, "What is the perceived collective efficacy as reported by teachers at Heritage Middle School, East Central Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas?" The results of the study indicated that the teachers who participated in the study all mildly agreed that they had the ability to make all the students at Heritage Middle School successful. The second question studied was, "What is the relationship between selected demographic variables and the perceptions of the teachers regarding collective efficacy at Heritage Middle School, East Central Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas?" The results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences between the variables of gender, ethnicity, length of time in the classroom, length of time in the district, and length of time in the profession and the teachers' collective efficacy. During the 10 years that the Heritage Middle School has been in operation, there have been six different principals resulting in six different approaches to the management of the school. No research was found that explains how a school's collective efficacy is affected when there are numerous administrative changes. Further research that examines the relationship between stability of leadership and collective efficacy of teachers is needed.

The cumulative measure represents a robust picture of the social interactions within a school that influences the beliefs, behaviors and emotions of organizational members. Academic optimism has been established as a predictor of student achievement controlling for student socioeconomic status. However, past studies have not included student ethnicity in statistical models utilized to test the effect of academic optimism on student achievement, even though research and state achievement data show gaps among students of color and Anglo students that are just as substantial as those identified along socioeconomic. Additionally, there was a need to determine if academic optimism is simply a product of school context or if there is additional variance left to be explained by psychosocial interactions within schools. Therefore, the intent of this study was threefold: first, examine the relationships between the theoretical underpinnings of collective efficacy, academic emphasis, and faculty trust in students and parents; second, produce a more rigorous test of the effect of academic optimism on student achievement by including student ethnicity in addition to other student background characteristics; and third, determine to what magnitude school context explains a schools level of academic optimism. The author utilized multi-level analysis to test the relationship between school academic optimism and student achievement controlling for student ethnicity, socioeconomic status, previous achievement and school size within a new sample. The relationship between school academic optimism and school context was tested by employing multiple regression analysis. In a sample of 10,464 students nested within 97 elementary schools the author was able to determine that academic optimism is a positive predictor of student math and reading achievement. Furthermore, academic optimism is capable of mediating the negative relationships existing between both low socioeconomic status (SES) and student of color status and student achievement. Additionally, the studied revealed that only 52% of the variance in school level academic optimism is determined by school context. The participants collaboratively discussed a challenging text in groups of 4 using a text-based chat tool. A relationship was found between self-efficacy and participation where collaborative condition moderated the relationship between efficacy and participation.
