Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed: In the Light of Modern Discussion If, as is more than ever probable, the faith of the first century is to be the faith of the twentieth century, many troubled souls will be immensely comforted. We are witnessing this remarkable phenomenon; the oldest extant Christian Confession that has any completeness is rapidly and widely finding a new acceptance. It is heard to-day in public worship upon more lips than any form of words outside the Bible. The title, "The Apostles' Creed," need trouble no one. The origin of the Creed is unknown; although it has undergone some slight modifications, it has so simple and compact a unity as to indicate that it was struck out at a single heat. It is a crystallization of the Christian faith, as that faith, passing out of the dry and narrow atmosphere of Jerusalem, came to self-consciousness in the more liberal and cosmopolitan atmosphere of Antioch. It is in this sense the Creed of an apostle, i. e., of a man who has a message because he has something that he believes. It is for all time because it is triumphant and not defensive; it is conscious of no enemies; it joyfully affirms. The addresses on the Apostles' Creed were given in Great St. Mary's, Cambridge, during Lent, 1919; the development of thought is essentially the same, but identity does not extend further. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed in the Twentieth Century The creed seems to have arisen progressively in the early Church until it assumed its present form as a spontaneous confession of the truths preached by the Apostles and their successors. The real Apostolic Succession is not only of preachers but specially of preaching. What would be the spontaneous confession of the whole Church to-day of the truths now being preached in its pulpits is a crucial question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed: Its Origin, Its Purpose, and Its Historical Interpretation It will be seen that the notes deal largely with the Old Roman Symbol and not with the present text of the creed. This is due not only to the greater relative importance of the former, but also to the fact that my own inde pendent investigations have been confined to questions connected with the Older symbol, and I have not cared to burden the notes with second hand results. The conclusions touching the origin and history of the present text of the creed which are given in the latter part of the lecture are based wholly upon the investigations of others, especially Caspari and Kattenbusch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God the Teacher of Mankind: A Plain, Comprehensive Explanation of Christian Doctrine; The Apostles' Creed A certain traveller, returning to his home from a distant country, came, at nightfall, to the entrance of a vast forest. Being unable to tarry or retrace his steps, he was obliged to pass through the forest in the darkness of the night. As he was about to enter these gloomy woods, he met with an old shepherd of venerable aspect, of whom he asked the way. "Alas!" said the shepherd, "it is not easy to show you the way. The forest is crossed by hundreds of paths which wind in every direction, and very much resemble one another. They all, except one, lead to the abyss." "To what abyss?" said the traveller. "The abyss which surrounds the forest," said the shepherd. "Moreover, the forest is not safe. It is filled with robbers and wild beasts. It is infested in particular with an enormous serpent, which commits the most frightful ravages. Scarcely a day passes but we find the mangled remains of some unhappy traveller who has fallen a prey to it. And yet, you must absolutely pass through this forest, in order to arrive at the country to which you are going. Touched with compassion, I have stationed myself at the entrance of this dangerous passage, in order to guide and to protect all that enter this forest. At certain distances along the route I have stationed my sons, who are animated with the same sentiments as myself, and fulfil the same offices of charity. For this reason I venture to term it the creed OF creeds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
