Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civic Education in Elementary Schools As: Illustrated in Indianapolis Indianapolis was one of the first cities to introduce in its elementary schools what is now commonly known as community civics. So far as known, Chicago is the only city that antedates Indianapolis in efforts in this direction. Mr. H. W. Thurston, then of the Chicago Normal School, developed a syllabus in elementary civics which laid especial emphasis upon the civic life of Chicago, a few years before the Indianapolis plan was inaugurated. Both Indianapolis and Chi cago now make of community civics a prominent feature of the ele mentary school work, though in somewhat different ways. Other cities have, in the last few years, introduced instruction more or less similar in character. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Civics: The New Civics WE have not attempted to carry out any stereotyped idea of a text book in Civics. Our aim has been to give the child of the upper grammar grades such an understand ing of his relation to other people as will make him a good citizen. That understanding can come only with a knowl edge of the difficulties the human race has had in learning to live and work together. An appreciation of the advan tages to him of the present stage of cooperation can be gained only with a knowledge of the slow and patient steps which have brought us to that stage. A zeal for carrying the human race still further forward in its ability to live and work together can be inspired in the hearts of all our children only when the advantages of the present and the future are made to stand out against the disadvantages of the past. It is faith that we all need; and by faith we mean the belief that we can bring to pass the good we desire for the human race. We have told the story, therefore, of a few of the struggles which our ancestors have had in order to obtain and transmit to us some of the things which we now con sider essential to our comfort and happiness. The child can grasp the idea of a mountain as early as he can grasp the phenomenon of erosion on that mountain. In the same way, he can grasp the great movements of society as easily as he can grasp the petty details of township or county organization. Big things, if taught as simply, are as easy to grasp as little things. If the child is ever to have the proper perspective he must see the great background against which the little details stand out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History and Civics in the Elementary, and the Secondary School It is the aim of this book to aid teachers of history, and especially those who have not had special training in historical work, better to comprehend the nature of the subject. Until they have considered the development of history as a way of portraying the experience of mankind, and know something of the methods by which it seeks to reach the sure basis of fact, and until they have seriously studied the problems of historical instruction, they cannot feel a large interest in the subject, and consequently cannot inspire their pupils with such an interest. The first part of this book has been written to set them on the way toward a better comprehension of these aspects of history. The second part offers a review of the general field, which may guide those who require such help intelligently to study its many phases. While this review is constructed on the basis of the programme suggested in the first part, it may serve almost equally well where the programme in use includes only sections of the field, or distributes the matter in a different way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study in History, Civics, and Ethics for the Day Elementary Schools Fundamentally, history, -civics, and Geography deal with relationships or problems arising from man's efforts to live with his fellows on the earth. They are different aspects of the same social subject, rather than three closely correlated subjects as they have often been viewed. This conception of History, Civics, and Geography as a tri-une subject has exercised a controlling influence over the selection of the kind and extent of teaching material, and the recommendations of types of teaching method, made in this Course of Study. It should, therefore, be thoroughly understood and appreciated by the teacher who would achieve the aim intended in this Course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual for Teachers of Civics in the Upper Grammar Grades, Junior High Schools, and Continuation Schools: Elementary Civics Questions 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 are for inquiry and reflection. Question 6 is answered in the appendix. Local Government. Local government has not been treated in detail in the text. The distinctions between systems of the New England states, where the. Town performs many functions, and the county few; the southern and western states, where the county performs many functions and the town few; and the states of the central and middle west where the county and town (or township, as it is called), divide the functions more evenly, we cannot draw here. The teacher should read the chapters on local govern ment in Bryce's American Commonwealth (v. 1, chap ters 48 and Fiske's Civil Government, or similar texts. All our American histories discuss the reasons for the difference, and since these are accessible to all the pupils, it is not worth our while to insert the story here. Pupils should, however, review this subject from their histories. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What to Do for Uncle Sam: A First Book of Citizenship The United States Bureau of Education lays emphasis upon the part of the schools in training for citizenship. It urges a new teaching of the subject, beginning with the home, going on to the school, and from there into community relations. The Government asks, also, that work in civics be begun in the elementary schools. The work should embody less of the details of governmental agencies, but focus instead upon the child's own community obligations and activities. Following this thought, and taking up the pro gram of community civics outlined by the Bureau of Education, I have written What to Do for Uncle Sam, a first book in patriotism and citizen ship. At the end of each chapter I have placed questions and suggestions which establish a contact between the classroom and community life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparing for Citizenship: An Elementary d104book in Civics At the close of each chapter in the text, the teacher will find questions and topics for further study and investigation. The more simple investigations only should be undertaken in classes composed of the younger pupils. Care should be exercised, also, in selecting only questions of especial interest to the particular community; for example, rural schools will naturally omit many questions pertaining to urban conditions, and vice versa. As a rule, it will be best to assign one question to each pupil, or to a group of pupils, to be reported on at a future date. The teacher should suggest sources of information for pupils to make use of in their investigations. Often the parents, or older brothers and sisters, can give the necessary help; or, again, it may be advisable to consult local officials for information concerning their work. Members of the class should be encouraged to visit township, county, and municipal offices; and local officials should he invited to come before the class and describe the business of their departments. Added interest may be secured by organizing the class into a town meeting, or as a city council, State legislature, or branch of Congress. A bulletin board in the classroom for newspaper clippings pertaining to governmental affairs will prove interesting and helpful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Topical Discussion of American History: Constituting a Teachers' Manual and Course of Study in History and Civics for Use in the Elementary Schools This little volume is a working manual for the teacher and constitutes a course in history and civics for the elementary schools. Many able educators have been consulted in the prepara tion of this course, and it is believed to be so complete in every detail that boards of education can adopt it as the course in his tory and civics without further reference to these subjects in the school manual or regular course of study. This course has been prepared with especial reference to the regular text-books. Teach ers and pupils frequently complain that the regular or official text on history is too difficult, and it is hoped that this course will be of great assistance to them in the use of this text. The dis cussions, references and questions in this volume are intended for the direct help and assistance of the teacher, the object being to reduce the teacher's work to a minimum and to provide at the same time a broad and progressive course in history and civics. In order to further ass'i'st'the teacher, a pupil's outline for use in connection with this course of study has been prepared and is bound under a separate cover. Special attention is directed to Questions for Class Recitations and Questions for Composi tions and Examinations, which follow each general topic or chapter in the work for the seventh and eighth grades. A few years ago it would have been necessary to have accom panied this little volume with an explanatory word regarding the nature of the work for which it provides. Happily, that time is now passed, for nearly all the better teachers and schools in the United States are now doing the work for which the course of study herein outlined makes specific provision. The com bining of the work in civics with that on history is one of the most valuable features of this course, and a feature which has been thoroughly tested in the schools of the East with most satis factory results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Course of Study in Civics: Grades One to Six, for the Public Schools of Philadelphia It is the purpose of the course in civics in the first grade to lay the foundation of good citizenship by devel oping ih the child some of the fundamental civic virtues. The work in this grade is, therefore, primarily training in morals and manners. There are three conditions necessary to the develop ment of right moral conduct. The child must know what is right; he must desire to do it; but, most important of all, he must be trained, through constant practice, in the formation of goo-d habits. The knowledge of the right and the emotional basis for future action may be given by means of story, poem, song, memory gem, games, dramatization and other class or group exercises. In such instruction, care should be taken to avoid pointing the moral, as to do so is likely to Spoil the emotional reaction desired. While this instruo tion will constitute a very small part of the day's work, the doing side or practical application will be constant. In the main, the teacher's method should be one of securing results by commendation rather than by censure.
