Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: December 1942 saw the bloodiest Christmas in the history of mankind. From the islands in the Pacific to the China front, from the trenches in Russia to the battlelines in North Africa, in the skies over Europe and in the depths of the Atlantic, men were killing each other in greater numbers than ever before. The Holocaust continued, and innocent civilians were murdered by the thousands throughout the evil Nazi empire, even as the perpetrators celebrated the birth of Christ. At the same time as the slaughter continued unabatedly, throughout the world there were random acts of kindness, born out of an instinctive feeling of the essential brotherhood of man. These gestures also straddled religious barriers and sometimes included those of non-Christian faiths. Even some Japanese, otherwise embarked on a self declared crusade against the West, relented for a few precious hours in acknowledgment of the holiday. At the same time, Christmas 1942 saw the injunction of “good will to man” distorted in ugly and callous ways. At Auschwitz, SS guards played cruel games with their prisoners. In Berlin, the German heart of darkness, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels spent time with his family while still buried in feverish fantasies about the Jewish world conspiracy. Christmas 1942 saw the entire range of man’s conduct towards his fellow man, reflecting the extremes of behavior, good and bad, that World War Two gave rise to. The way the holiday was marked around the world tells a deeper and more universal story of the human condition in extraordinary times.

Book excerpt: Calcutta has one of the largest Anglo-Indian populations in the world. This is a community with members who occupy a wide range of socio-economic positions and who live a variety of lives that are always nuanced by their being Anglo-Indian. However, the community has been conveniently stereotyped by the media. Christmas in Calcutta goes beyond the stereotype and delves deep in this study of the Anglo-Indian community in Calcutta. The book comprises life stories, memoir pieces and essays on issues of contemporary interest. It is organised into four sections: 'Identity' focuses on the origins, characteristics and the constitutional definition of the community; 'Faith', or specifically the practice of Christianity, is the subject of study in the second section; 'Education' points out some of the failings of the education system for the community; and the final section, 'Community Care', talks about Anglo-Indian care and the consolidation of their community through this care. By drawing on the vital lives of real individuals, the author hopes that there is a change to the lens through which these people of India are viewed.

Book excerpt: In the popular imagination, Calcutta is a packed and pestilential sprawl, made notorious by the Black Hole and the works of Mother Teresa. Kipling called it a City of Dreadful Night, and a century later V.S. Naipaul, Gunter Grass and Louis Malle revived its hellish image. This is the place where the West first truly encountered the East. Founded in the 1690s by East India Company merchants beside the Hugli River, Calcutta grew into India's capital during the Raj and the second city of the British Empire. Named the City of Palaces for its neoclassical mansions, Calcutta was the city of Clive, Hastings, Macaulay and Curzon. It was also home to extraordinary Bengalis such as Rabindranath Tagore, the first Asian Nobel laureate, and Satyajit Ray, among the geniuses of world cinema. Above all, Calcutta (renamed Kolkata in 2001) is a city of extremes, where exquisite refinement rubs shoulders with coarse commercialism and political violence. Krishna Dutta explores these multiple paradoxes, giving personal insight into Calcutta's unique history and modern identity as reflected in its architecture, literature, cinema and music. Book excerpt: "We live the way the British live. Indians live their own way," declares Mrs Olga Walsh of the Tollygunge Home, a refuge for 35 elderly Anglo-Indians hidden away in the middle of noisy, vibrant Calcutta. In stark contrast to the rest of post-colonial India, the residents of Tollygunge cling to the belief that Britain is their true home. Anglo-Indians trace their origins back to the 17th century when the British East Indian Company encouraged marriages between British men and Indian women to further its commercial interests. After India won independence in 1947, two-thirds of the Anglo-Indian community emigrated to other parts of the British Commonwealth, first to Britain and later to Canada and Australia. As Christmas approaches, preparations begin for the annual party. We meet Louis Robertson, once an engineer and now the Home's music man who plays everything from swing to opera on his old cassette player which he claims has "medically cured" many of the residents. Reeves McDermott and Jimmy Carr dance their cares away in the gents' dormitory while a new resident, Hortencia Loxton, waits anxiously for a visit from her son. Gladys Minwalla and her friend Elsie Martin reminisce about a time when "manners and politeness" reigned. And Phyllis Robertson, who despises curry because "it makes your skin dark", fancies a mutton stew. Overseeing the celebrations is the Bengali chairperson of the management committee, the formidable Mrs Nilima Dutta. Although herself a Hindu, she has organised this Christian ritual for the past 28 years, hiring a band to play Christmas carols, bringing out the fine bone china for tea and proudly standing with everyone else to sing God Save the Queen. A Calcutta Christmas is a gentle portrait of life inside the Tollygunge Home. It observes the anger, jealousies and loneliness of this forgotten community, showing how it survives through friendships, love and laughter... and a different sense of belonging. Book excerpt: A dogged enemy of Hitler, resolute ally of the Americans, and inspiring leader through World War II, Winston Churchill is venerated as one of the truly great statesmen of the last century. But while he has been widely extolled for his achievements, parts of Churchill's record have gone woefully unexamined. As journalist Madhusree Mukerjee reveals, at the same time that Churchill brilliantly opposed the barbarism of the Nazis, he governed India with a fierce resolve to crush its freedom movement and a profound contempt for native lives. A series of Churchill's decisions between 1940 and 1944 directly and inevitably led to the deaths of some three million Indians. The streets of eastern Indian cities were lined with corpses, yet instead of sending emergency food shipments Churchill used the wheat and ships at his disposal to build stockpiles for feeding postwar Britain and Europe. Combining meticulous research with a vivid narrative, and riveting accounts of personality and policy clashes within and without the British War Cabinet, Churchill's Secret War places this oft-overlooked tragedy into the larger context of World War II, India's fight for freedom, and Churchill's enduring legacy. Winston Churchill may have found victory in Europe, but, as this groundbreaking historical investigation reveals, his mismanagement -- facilitated by dubious advice from scientist and eugenicist Lord Cherwell -- devastated India and set the stage for the massive bloodletting that accompanied independence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years leading up to the independence and accompanying partition of India mark a tumultuous period in the history of Bengal. Representing both a major front in the Indian struggle against colonial rule, as well as a crucial Allied outpost in the British/American war against Japan, Bengal stood at the crossroads of complex and contentious structural forces - both domestic and international - which, taken together, defined an era of political uncertainty, social turmoil and collective violence. While for the British the overarching priority was to save the empire from imminent collapse at any cost, for the majority of the Indian population the 1940s were years of acute scarcity, violent dislocation and enduring calamity. In particular there are three major crises that shaped the social, economic and political context of pre-partition Bengal: the Second World War, the Bengal famine of 1943, and the Calcutta riots of 1946. Hungry Bengal examines these intricately interconnected events, foregrounding the political economy of war and famine in order to analyse the complex nexus of hunger, war and civil violence in colonial Bengal at the twilight of British rule.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this edited volume is to explore the motivations, decision making processes, and consequences, when older people consider or accomplish return migration to their place of origin; and also to raise the public policy profile of this increasingly important subject. The book examines in detail a range of themes affecting return migrations, including: family ties, obligations and their emotive strengths; comparative quality, and cost, of health and welfare provision in host and home countries; older age transitions and cultural affinity with homeland; and psychological adjustment, belonging and attachment to place.
