A building was erected for the purpose by Earl Manvers, on the site of the old Assembly Rooms, which had been destroyed by fire in December 1820. It was originally founded under the care and management of a body of gentlemen, many of whose names will long occupy a prominent position in the annals of literature and science. The primary object of its establishment was to provide a place of resort, not merely for the studious, but for the inhabitants of Bath generally, and its visitors, - to supply it with a Library of Reference, and the means of information in every branch of science and literature - to provide a suitable apartment in which lectures might be given and works of art exhibited - and also to form a Museum of Antiquities and of the various branches of Natural History.
