Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since antiquity, Roman architecture and planning have inspired architects and designers. In this volume, Diane Favro and Fikret Yegül offer a comprehensive history and analysis of the Roman built environment, emphasizing design and planning aspects of buildings and streetscapes. They explore the dynamic evolution and dissemination of architectural ideas, showing how local influences and technologies were incorporated across the vast Roman territory. They also consider how Roman construction and engineering expertise, as well as logistical proficiency, contributed to the making of bold and exceptional spaces and forms. Based on decades of first-hand examinations of ancient sites throughout the Roman world, from Britain to Syria, the authors give close accounts of many sites no longer extant or accessible. Written in a lively and accessible manner, Roman Architecture and Urbanism affirms the enduring attractions of Roman buildings and environments and their relevance to a global view of architecture. It will appeal to readers interested in the classical world and the history of architecture and urban design, as well as wide range of academic fields. With 835 illustrations including numerous new plans and drawings as well as digital renderings.

Download or read book The Witness and the Other World written by Mary Baine Campbell and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveying exotic travel writing in Europe from late antiquity to the age of discover, The Witness and the Other World illustrates the fundamental human desire to change places, if only in the imagination.Mary B. Campbell looks at works by pilgrims, crusaders, merchants, discoverers, even armchair fantasists such as Mandeville, as well as the writings of Marco Polo, Columbus, and Walter Raleigh. According to Campbell, these travel accounts are exotic because they bear witness to alienated experiences; European travelers, while claiming to relate fact, were often passing on monstrous projections. She contends that their writing not only documented but also made possible the conquest of the peoples whom she travelers described, and she shows how travel literature contributed to the genesis of the modern novel and the modern life sciences.

Book Synopsis Hollywood Highbrow by : Shyon Baumann
Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book Synopsis Ruin the Sacred Truths by : Harold BLOOM
Download or read book Ruin the Sacred Truths written by Harold BLOOM and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bloom surveys with majestic view the literature of the West from the Old Testament to Samuel Beckett. He provocatively rereads the Yahwist (or J) writer, Jeremiah, Job, Jonah, the Iliad, the Aeneid, Dante's Divine Comedy, Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, the Henry IV plays, Paradise Lost, Blake's Milton, Wordsworth's Prelude, and works by Freud, Kafka, and Beckett. In so doing, he uncovers the truth that all our attempts to call any strong work more sacred than another are merely political and social formulations. This is criticism at its best. Table of Contents: 1. The Hebrew Bible 2. From Homer to Dante 3. Shakespeare 4. Milton 5. Enlightenment and Romanticism 6. Freud and Beyond Reviews of this book: Bloom's puissance is not entirely his own; for some of it, he is indebted to Nietzsche, Freud, Schopenhauer, Gershom Scholem, and other masters. But enough of it is his own to constitute a distinctive form of splendor. --Denis Donoghue, New York Review of Books Reviews of this book: The wit, the eclecticism and the gripping paradoxes...the force of [Bloom's] intellect carries the reader from pinnacle to pinnacle, showing a new spiritual landscape from each. --Roger Scruton, Washington Times Reviews of this book: In some ways the wildest of the wild men (and women), in some ways the most traditional of the traditionalists, Harold Bloom remains serene amid the turbulence--much of it caused by him. He stands dauntless, a party of one, as thrilling to behold up on the high wire as he is (at times) throttling to read on the page...From this strong critic dealing with these strong poets comes a potent mix of insight. --Mark Feeney, Boston Globe

Book Synopsis Descriptive Catalogue of Old Masters by : James Jackson Jarves
Download or read book Descriptive Catalogue of Old Masters written by James Jackson Jarves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of "Old Masters" Collected by James J. Jarves, to Illustrate the History of Painting From A. D. 1200 to the Best Periods of Italian Art, and Deposited in the "Institute of Fine Arts," 625, Broadway, New York More than forty of the pictures have been engraved on cop per by Vincenzo Stanghi, a. Pupil of Raphael Moxghen, for art-studies, in order to give an idea, so far as composition and general character are concerned, of the progress of art during several centuries in Italy. Those, therefore, who cherish the old masters, will have an opportunity, not only of studying the pictures themselves, but of taking away with them very carefully prepared outlines, with partial shadings, of many of the most interesting specimens. It should be borne in mind, that the larger number of these paintings were old before America was discovered; and necessuily they bear the mks of time. The newness and freshness of a modem painting would be sadly out of keeping on an ancient picture. We must accept them as they are, doing on: best to get paintings as intsct and well preserved as possible; and, when repairs or mtorstions are necessary, limiting them to what is required (0 preserve the picture keeping, so far as is possible, the origins] tone and manner. And in no 008 permitting. As is too often done, entire repainting, which obliterate. The old em): and substitutes the new.
