Book excerpt: Over 1.5 million students are enrolled throughout the 244 school districts within North Carolina public schools (NC Department of Public Instruction, 2018). A recent survey by North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (2016) indicated that approximately 70% of students participate in music. Music included multiple forms of instrumental music such as band and orchestra, as well as vocal music such as chorus and show choir. While 70% of students participate in music, the specific enrollment in string orchestra programs as unclear. This action research study addressed the problem specifically concerning the status of string orchestra programs in North Carolina public schools. Understanding the status of string orchestra programs impacted all stakeholders including teachers, students, parents, and administrators. The purpose of this study was to identify best practice strategies that may contribute to the establishment of new string orchestra programs, as well as how improved recruitment and retention practices may increase enrollment in existing string programs. North Carolina Public School string teachers served as study participants. The research methodology was a qualitative case study. A questionnaire served as the primary sources of data collection. the results of the study indicated that the majority of string teachers are not the same ethnicity as their students. Results also indicated that many participants taught in schools with high populations of students from low-income families. These results are not typical of trends in existing literature. Since this study laid the groundwork to prove that trends in existing literature are not the same in North Carolina, future research may be conducted to follow the patterns of enrollment, recruitment, and retention of string orchestra programs in Title I schools.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors previously associated with challenges facing in-service instrumental music educators in northwest North Carolina. Two research questions guided the study: 1) How do instrumental music educators in northwest North Carolina rate factors that may influence their programs? and 2) To what extent are the following factors relevant to instrumental music educators: school size, student involvement, geographic location, budget, and support? The Rural Instrumental Music Teacher Survey was constructed by the researcher using a five point Likert-type scale. The 38-item questionnaire was distributed to 84 instrumental music educators in northwest North Carolina, of which, 56 were returned and used for analysis (N=56). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the questionnaire data. Results from the data suggest that class offerings are perceived to be adequate within perspective schools, but scheduling conflicts are rated as problematic, and to a greater extent with educators who are service multiple schools. Regardless of school size, instrumental music educators choose to participate in large ensemble adjudicated events, with a less clear picture of school participation in small ensemble or solo events. All survey participants agreed they have high student participation in other school and community extra-curricular activities. Geographic location was rated as less of a hindrance for access to music retailers than it was for access to university outreach. Budget considerations received inconclusive results. Music educators valued the support received from all sources and deemed them important to the overall success of the music program; the perceived amount of support received was strongest from parents and school level administration.

Book excerpt: The majority of literature about teaching in urban settings has focused on the experiences of educators and students in large urban settings (Costa-Giomi, 2008; Fitzpatrick, 2008, 2011), and has been general classroom focused (Elpus & Abril, 2011; Glenn, 2005; McEachin & Brewer, 2012; Young, 2007). A smaller body of literature about teaching music classes in urban settings exists (Kinney, 2010; Bernard, 2010), while less still exists about the status of orchestra programs in urban settings (Fitzpatrick, 2011, Hamann & Gillespie, 1998; Smith, 1997). Little research examines midsize urban educational settings by state, and less still has examined the status of orchestra programs in midsized urban settings in Virginia. The purpose of this study was to examine the status of middle and high school string orchestra programs in Virginia public schools located in midsized urban settings. String orchestra directors (N = 30) were invited to complete an online survey of 26 questions. Nineteen of the orchestra directors participated. Fifteen participants completed the survey, while four surveys were incomplete. Individual data for study participant's responses to multiple choice and Likert scale responses were collected, compared and analyzed. Data for free-response questions were transcribed for each individual participant before being grouped according to observable grouped theme categories. Results of this study suggested participants possessed a high level of training (master's or doctorate degree), and reported having a high level of job satisfaction. With regard to ethnicity, 87% (n = 13) of the participants indicated that their own ethnicity was not reflective of the majority ethnicity of the student population with which they worked. A majority of the participants (66%) indicated that they had experienced some level of difficulty when recruiting students for their school's orchestra program. A number of shared themes were identified in the participants' free response transcriptions. Participants shared the values of showing respect to, caring for, and having high expectations for their students. Respondents emphasized being organized, and having classroom management skills. Other themes included the importance of having adequate and effective teacher preparation; access to instruments and other resources; and the support of parents, administrators, and colleagues.

Book excerpt: Symphonic Engagement is a longitudinal study spanning six years, investigating the reasons and benefits for, and the impact on twelve urban public school students who decided to use their free time to participate and be engaged in extra-curricular activities in string orchestras. Literature and research inform us that the arts can play a significant role in the curriculum, inside and outside school, and this study discusses: the connection of the music curriculum to students' future lives after secondary school graduation; the place of music education in the curriculum; music in our society; music and the brain; the effect of after-school programs on student engagement; and the pedagogy of arts education. Case study is the qualitative methodology used in this research. Data comes from interviews, field notes, and questionnaires that explore and interrogate the issues surrounding music education. Twelve young participants, from different gender, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, were interviewed about their lived experiences and involvement with string orchestras, and on the ways in which these experiences have affected them as students and as members of society. The analysis of the data reveals connections between the author's arts experiences in the public school system, and those of the twelve students interviewed. The teacher-student relationship, equity, family influence, and technology are discussed as factors that can strengthen programs for youth, by deepening engagement in school experiences. This study explores why some teachers and students choose to participate or become engaged in extra-curricular activities and examines the impact on educational communities, on the future direction of string education, and on the relationship of the teaching/learning experience.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the profile of rural string/orchestra programs and identify factors critical for successfully establishing new rural string/orchestra programs. Self-labeled rural survey respondents (n =108) were K-12, string/orchestra teachers and members of the National Association of Music Education (NAfME) from rural states. There were 343 total responses for a response rate of 12%. The researcher discovered there was no way to directly contact rural string/orchestra teachers or isolate a representative sample using available means. Because of these limitations, the researcher concluded that serving not only rural string/orchestra teachers, but also all rural music teachers, is currently not possible. It is evident that a representative database of those teaching music in rural school districts does not exist. From the data gathered in the current study, rural music teachers acknowledge they need more support. Additional observations were made about the values and rationales for string/orchestra instruction, culturally responsive music instruction offered in rural areas, and the need for updated advocacy statements that reflect a more contemporary community of string instrument teachers and learners. Special attention was given to creating a bibliography since one on teaching music in rural school districts did not previously exist.
