Parental involvement has been recognized as one of the most important variables influencing student academic achievement (Henrich & Gadaire, 2008; Jeynes, 2007; Stewart, 2008). Recent history suggests that parental involvement is playing a much larger role than ever before in terms of student success. Overall, recent research has been extensive in the area of parental involvement and family engagement. The problem is that findings have varied in the analysis of the relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement, particularly in the Hispanic, African American, Asian and White subgroups (Hong & Ho, 2005). In addition to those variations, the majority of research surrounding parental involvement has focused on early age children as opposed to adolescents (Seyfried & Chung, 2002). Using Joyce Epstein's (2001) "spheres of influence" model as a framework, this research undertook a qualitative case study approach to identify the barriers to parental involvement for four purposively selected disadvantaged families in a suburban setting. Each family had at least one child attending a secondary level school. Interviews and observations were conducted in the participant's homes and at school. Data was analyzed following a constant comparative method (Merriam, 1998). The findings of the study identified three themes which included time constraints, homework assistance, and adolescent resistance to parental involvement as the greatest barriers for the four disadvantaged families. Implications of the findings may assist schools in creating targeted improvement plans which help overcome obstacles related to parental involvement. Additionally, findings may assist parents by identifying successful involvement strategies which help promote academic achievement and social growth.

Book excerpt: The academic achievement gap continues to be a critical issue in the education of minority and economically disadvantaged students (Bemak, Chung, & Siroskey-Sabdo, 2005; College Board, 1999; Flores, 2007; Yaffe & Educational Testing Service, 2011). Due to an increase in poverty in the U.S., many more students are more likely to experience an education that is characterized by the academic achievement gap. In comparison to students from higher-income backgrounds, students from low-income backgrounds are more likely to fall behind in various areas of academic achievement. The lower levels of academic achievement among low-income students often result from the lack of access to adequately resourced schools and equal opportunities to learn (Flores, 2007). The ability for low-income middle school students to be academically successful despite their educationally disadvantaged environments has been attributed to many individually-based factors (Elliott, DiPerna, Mroch, & Lang, 2004). However, current research has found that parental involvement and perceptions play a key role in determining academic achievement for low-income students (McCoach et al., 2010). Many parents are aware that they play a role in their child's academic success. However, some parents are often unsure of the specific things they can do to support their child's academic success (West-Olatunji, Sanders, Mehta, & Behar-Horenstein, 2010). Therefore, it is important to help parents in low-income families understand how their involvement plays a vital role in promoting the academic achievement of their students. A workshop was created that focused on parental involvement as an environmental factor that promotes academic achievement in low-income students. The researcher collected evaluations on each day of the workshop. The aim of the evaluations was to provide the researcher with feedback on the effectiveness of various aspects of the workshop. The evaluation consisted of checklist, Likert-Scale, and open-ended questions. Analysis of the evaluation results allowed the researcher to determine workshop effectiveness. After completion of the two workshops, findings showed that the workshop effectively provided low-income parents with research-based involvement practices shown to support academic success and help reduce the academic achievement gap for low-income middle school students. The information gained from this workshop will help low-income parents know how to be more involved in the academic achievement of their student. Additionally, the effective design of this workshop will be useful in the planning of future parental involvement workshops.

Book excerpt: Student enrollment decisions parents make for their children encompass multiple factors and processes, founded on their beliefs and values. Some parents base enrollment decisions for their children on perceptions, not necessarily facts. A review of literature on school choice and perceptions toward students of poverty show that bias and stereotypes interfere with objective decision making for students. However, a gap exists in the research of school choice, perceptions of poverty, and school districts of affluence converging on the decision making process for student enrollment. This qualitative case study includes analysis of 23 participants' interview transcripts in an effort to understand parent perceptions toward students of poverty and how their perceptions influence enrollment decisions for their children. Analysis demonstrates perceptions do influence parent decisions to enroll children at diverse schools with high levels of student poverty depending on participants' beliefs, values, and personal experiences. Based on this conclusion, it is recommended that district enrollment policies undergo a minor revision and school practices provide objective information to all parents prior to enrollment. Further research is needed to further examine this study's value to changes in school district operations as they pertain to student enrollment.
