Book excerpt: Research has shown that parent involvement has been associated with positive academic outcomes, including but not limited to, increased academic performance, lower rates of retention/failure, increased self-regulatory behavior, higher social functioning, and reduced special education placements (Anderson & Minke, 2007; Scharton, 2019). The use of on-line data management systems has proliferated over the course of the past decade. Throughout the 1990s, computer technology rapidly expanded in United States public schools. Between 1996-1997, U.S. school districts had added 500,000 computers for administrative use (Darby & Hughes, 2005). The passage of No Child Left behind (NCLB) and Race to the Top bolstered the use of technology in U.S. schools. With an increased emphasis placed on school to home connection, technology-based Student Information Systems grew increasingly common (Hughes, 2005; Epstein, 2004). Student information systems provide teachers, parents, and students the ability to monitor relevant student data, include a portal for parents to access information about their students, offer reporting capabilities, manage student admissions, and provide modules for school staff. Additionally, they serve as a communication tool that connect school activity with interested parties (parents, teachers, and administrators). Commonly known examples of SIS include, but are not limited to; PowerSchool SIS, Skyward, Gradelink, Infinite Campus, and a host of others. Commonalities often include the posting of academic and attendance data to parents, and students ("Best K-12", 2020). School to home communication has been determined to play an influential role in student achievement (Anderson & Minke, 2007; Epstein, 2010; Henderson & Mapp, 2002; Scharton, 2019), however, few research studies exist examining the landscape of the Infinite Campus Parent Portal as a communication vehicle, along with the parent, teacher, and administrator perceptions of this informational systems. The purpose of this study is to understand the use of Infinite Campus and to determine the extent to which information posted therein inspires intervention (e.g., contact with school officials, academic support at home, etc.) Results from this study will provide schools/districts with a greater understanding of parent/guardian Infinite Campus usage patterns and present the District with an opportunity to further enhance their communication capacities.

Data will be collected through virtual individual interviews, virtual focus group interviews, and documents. Data collected will be analyzed for common themes that transcend the cases (Yin, 2009). The data analysis will allow for conclusions to be drawn about the overall meaning resulting from the case study and general lessons that can be learned (Creswell, 2013).

These biases often result in barriers and limitations that negatively impact students' academic achievement and social and emotional development. Studies have also documented the impact of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in transforming school culture and implementing school-wide change. However, few studies have looked at how bias and issues of equity are addressed via PLCs. Using qualitative methods, this study examined district and site level administrators' roles and perceptions of the use of PLCs as a vehicle for achieving school-wide goals of equity. Interview data gathered from 17 site and district level administrators in one district were analyzed for this study. This study used Transformative Adult Learning (TAL) as a lens to examine administrator perceptions of how PLCs facilitated a change in the narrative from one that focuses on blaming students for underachievement to one that focuses on teacher practices and pedagogy that supports all students. All administrators in this study reported that moving a staff and shifting teacher belief systems was challenging. This was especially the case when staff did not fully understand the purpose of the work of the PLCs, how to effectively lead or engage in a PLC, and/or lacked trust and positive working relationships. At the same time, each site administrator was able to identify PLCs within their schools that were making steady progress toward achieving the goals of equity. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study is to examine administrators' experiences sustaining professional learning communities (PLCs) in three Southeast Louisiana school districts. At this stage of the research, sustained PLCs will be defined as professional learning communities that have been established using The System for Teacher and Student Advancement (TAP) and/or Best Practices Center (BPC) structures and continued for two or more years. The questions guiding this research sought to discover how administrators describe their roles in sustaining PLCs in Louisiana schools, what structures administrators perceive necessary to sustain PLCs, how administrators support an environment conducive to sustaining PLCs, and what challenges, if any, administrators face in sustaining PLCs. The theories that guided this study were Burns’ (1978) transformational leadership theory as it supports leading individuals in collaborative goal attainment and Bandura’s (1977) social learning theory on goal setting and motivation. Administrators in respective schools were emailed surveys to complete to ascertain their perceptions of PLCs. Interviews were conducted either face-to-face or by teleconference for the participants’ convenience. Documents related to PLCs within the administrators’ school environments were requested and analyzed using open coding to identify common themes. A focus group interview was conducted after initial interviews with a small group of administrators. Members of the focus group were asked to create a mind map to present a visual representation of their perceptions of PLCs. All data collected were reviewed and coded for common themes. It is hoped that this study will provide a voice for the experiences of administrators leading schools with sustained PLCs.
