The beauty of flowers has inspired artists, designers, poets, and myriad other creators for centuries: the Dutch masters of the 1600s and impressionist painters from Manet to Van Gogh, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, botanical illustrator Georg Dionysius Ehret, even the inimitable Andy Warhol. Flowers: Art & Bouquets showcases a glorious profusion of floral images and interpretations across a spectrum of artistic media and time periods. Design writer Sixtine Dubly chronicles the evolution of floral design in this remarkable compendium, which also features stunning work by more than forty contemporary floral artists in London, Paris, and New York, from minimalist to elaborate. This treasury of gorgeous imagery blooms in resplendent color before the reader’s eyes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bunch of Roses: Designs of Pink Roses, Tulips, White Roses, Heliotrope, and Mignonette Passion-Flowers; Poems by Prominent Authors Roses, I see the sweetest roses, AS in the cool kiosk I pass, Tied in a thousand fragrant posies, And fastened to the roof with grass. What has bewitched the grass I wonder? It is the humblest weed that grows; How comes it that it Sits up yonder, And on a level with the rose? Silence! The grass said, and in sadness Let fall its tears in pearls Of dew; The generous man robs none Of gladness, And never scorns Old friends for new. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cluster of Roses AT the request of my friend, Miss bullock, I have arranged, prepared for publication, and supervised while passing through the press, the contents of the present volume. In performing this labor of love, I have not felt like taking any extensive liberties'with her productions, but have presented them in the main as they were written; feeling sure that the friends for whom they are intended will prefer to have them just as they emanated from her own mind, and while making allowance for any defects that may appear, will be agreeably surprised at their literary merit, when the great disadvantages under which their author labors are considered. In selecting from the materials at my disposal, I have tried to secure the greatest variety possible, giving specimens of both prose and poetry, blank verse and rhyme, serious compositions as well as some of a lighter strain, and miscellaneous pieces side by side with those Of a personal bearing. Book excerpt: Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction Finalist for the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography “An exhilarating romp through Orwell’s life and times and also through the life and times of roses.” —Margaret Atwood “A captivating account of Orwell as gardener, lover, parent, and endlessly curious thinker.” —Claire Messud, Harper's “Nobody who reads it will ever think of Nineteen Eighty-Four in quite the same way.” —Vogue A lush exploration of politics, roses, and pleasure, and a fresh take on George Orwell as an avid gardener whose political writing was grounded by his passion for the natural world “In the spring of 1936, a writer planted roses.” So be-gins Rebecca Solnit’s new book, a reflection on George Orwell’s passionate gardening and the way that his involvement with plants, particularly flowers, illuminates his other commitments as a writer and antifascist, and on the intertwined politics of nature and power. Sparked by her unexpected encounter with the roses he reportedly planted in 1936, Solnit’s account of this overlooked aspect of Orwell’s life journeys through his writing and his actions—from going deep into the coal mines of England, fighting in the Spanish Civil War, critiquing Stalin when much of the international left still supported him (and then critiquing that left) to his analysis of the relationship between lies and authoritarianism. Through Solnit’s celebrated ability to draw unexpected connections, readers are drawn onward from Orwell‘s own work as a writer and gardener to encounter photographer Tina Modotti’s roses and her politics, agriculture and illusion in the USSR of his time with forcing lemons to grow in impossibly cold conditions, Orwell’s slave-owning ancestors in Jamaica, Jamaica Kincaid’s examination of colonialism and imperialism in the flower garden, and the brutal rose industry in Colombia that supplies the American market. The book draws to a close with a rereading of Nineteen Eighty-Four that completes Solnit’s portrait of a more hopeful Orwell, as well as offering a meditation on pleasure, beauty, and joy as acts of resistance.
