Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Topical Survey of United States History This little work has been prepared in response to a general demand for a text-book which could be employed in teaching United States history by means of topical reviews. The topical outlines found in many of our best text-books have proved unsatisfactory as a means of review, since their use does not result in much more than a mere restudy of the original text. In order to present the historical review from new and interesting points of View, many teachers have found it necessary to prepare outlines or syllabi of lectures that their classes may be furnished with definite material for study. The present work is an outgrowth of a series of such notes prepared by the authors for use in their respective schools. The necessity for review is universally admitted. Almost all courses of study call for topical reviews in the various subjects of instruction, especially in history. Sound psychological and pedagogical considerations demand that this review should not consist of mere repetition, but should, as far as possible, be presented in fresh guise, and aid the pupil in organizing the knowledge which he has already acquired. The various elements of the matter to be reviewed should be closely interrelated, essential features emphasized, and a broader range of view disclosed, so that the knowledge as a whole may form an apperceptive system to which future acquisitions may be readily related. In the present work the attempt has been made to furnish a text for such a method of reviewing United States history. In adding this book to the large number of text-books on United States history already published, the authors feel that a further word of apology or justification is demanded. Many text-books attempt to steer a middle course between a reading book and study book. This attempt seems a rather unfortunate one, as neither end is attained, the result being a book not interesting enough to constitute a good reading book, nor yet concise enough for purposes of study. The present work is frankly a book to be studied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of United States History IN writing this book, the author has had in mind the presentation of the essential facts in our history in a clear, brief manner, with such explanations, by means of maps, pictures, and foot-notes, as the size of the work permitted. In its preparation the pupil's point of View and peculiar needs have been kept constantly in mind, and the author wishes to express his gratitude to Miss Ginn for her very helpful suggestions and advice. She also kindly drew many of the maps which are inserted in the text, prepared the topical reviews which follow the several divisions of the book, and devised the questions that are printed in Appendix V. He further wishes to express his obligation to Miss Eva G. Moore for many thoughtful suggestions, and especially for her aid in the preparation of the bio graphical notes and of Appendix IV with its accompanying map. Bibliographies of books of American history which are suitable for school use are now so plentiful that it has not seemed wise to add to the bulk of this volume by the insertion of such lists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States IN the preparation of this volume the attempt has been made to combine as far as possible the topical with the chronological method of presentation. History is not a mere study of facts, but of the relationship between facts, of cause and effect. In the selection of topics only those have been included which appeared to be really significant, and each topic has been developed, it is hoped, with sufficient fullness to make it intelligible. In order to bring the book into line with recent tendencies three things have been emphasized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gaps in the Published Records of United States History In reading such a survey, it was impossible not to be struck with the thought, how largely the method followed was applicable to the United States. For our briefer history, though the national govern ment has done relative little, much documentary material has already been published. But much yet remains to be done, and we are proceeding to do it without system or order. Executive depart ments of the federal government, or clerks of Congressional com mittees, conceive and execute documentary compilations; but all is casual and miscellaneous. More than half the state governi-nents are publishing or have published historical materials; and 110 two have followed the same plan. Historical societies are prone to publish what seems at the moment most interesting or most available, pro vided of course it is of date anterior to 1783, at which date for most of them American history comes to an end; certainly they seldom pay any regard to what other historical societies are doing. Many zealous individuals have added and are adding to the mass of valuable documentary print; but still in a casual manner. The result is chaos. Some parts of 0111' history are relatively oversupplied with original material, while others are in this regard neglected, and therefore remain unwritten. Or are left a prey to those writers who do not need documentary material in order to compose historical volumes. Figuratively speaking, we have bought enormous quantities of sup plies for our excavations, we have engaged our workers. We have titig deeply here and there; but we have made the dirt fly before we have mapped our isthmus. Or, to vary the metaphor but still keep near to the earth. One great region of our national domain, the historical region, is still, so far as primary labors are concerned. Largely an unsurveyed tract, subject to squatter settlement and squatter sovereignty. W'on-ltl it not be more rational to take. A lesson from the methodical procedure of the Dutch? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has been the experience of the author that pupils, as a class, -know only the his tory obtained from a common school text book. The object of this Outline is to encourage inves tigation. Our views should be broad, our knowl edge thorough. The author has endeavored to suggest, at least, every essential point requisite to the knowledge of our history, and around these vital events to arrange those facts less im portant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the United States and a Short Description of Its Government The description of the government was also used in two classes of Eighth Grade History, in the Emerson School, as a short outline for the study of Civil Government. From this experiment it was found that a healthy interest to know more about the Government of the United States was immediately aroused. This interest was encouraged, and satisfied in a measure by oral teaching, the assignment of subjects for special reports, and the citation to books where more information was available. To have noticed the minor states of former or recent days would have been to swell this performance beyond the size intended; nor should I have known where with propriety to pause.
