Book excerpt: What are we missing when we look at the creation narratives of Genesis only or primarily through the lens of modern discourse about science and religion? Theologian Peter Bouteneff explores how first-millennium Christian understandings of creation can inform current thought in the church and in the public square. He reaches back into the earliest centuries of our era to recover the meanings that early Jewish and Christian writers found in the stories of the six days of creation and of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Readers will find that their forbears in the faith saw in the Genesis narrative not simply an account of origins but also a rich teaching about the righteousness of God, the saving mission of Christ, and the destiny of the human creature.

Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation has long been thought of as a formidable and confusing work, understandable to only elite bible scholars. But, like its very name--Revelation--understanding of this seemingly complex book is available to all! God has even promised a special blessing to those who read it! David Baxley, D.Min., has broken down the perceived barriers and written a simple, verse-by- verse commentary that is understandable to even beginning bible students. It includes maps, a chronology of end time events and wars, definitions, and cross references to Old Testament scriptures that point to the time of the end. He also includes discussion of sections that are still not fully understood or defined, with possible varying interpretations. Revelation readers can get bogged down in the symbolism and sensationalism of the judgment and miss the main message of the book. It's a book of hope in the return of Jesus Christ and His perfect rule that will bring an end to evil and injustice and believers will live with God forevermore! A bible student for over 50 years, and pastor for over 40, Dr. David Baxley has studied and taught the Book of Revelation extensively. While in the hospital recovering from a heart transplant, he realized that the sequence of end time events was still not clear in his mind, so he spent the next two years in intense study. This book is the result of that study.

Book excerpt: The confusion and controversy among today's Christians concerning end times prophecy and the Book of Revelation are unnecessary. Many people are misled by circular reasoning based on their preconceived notions of contemporary and mainstream doctrines. The Bible was not written just for scholars and theologians, but for the layman as well. Anyone can understand prophecy with some study. In the last two centuries, some of its teachings have been made unnecessarily complicated, perhaps for sinister reasons. To understand its truths, one only has to read it in chronological order. The reader of this book will find the format to be easy and intuitive with plenty of room for notes and comments. The book initially builds the needed precepts for correct interpretation of prophetic scripture. Then, a verse-by-verse and outline-like presentation covers this large subject efficiently, yet with the minute detail needed for understanding that many authors have failed to include. The narrative commentary is concentrated and concise. This allows the Bible to speak for itself. The text of this book includes the complete scripture being discussed in its proper context. This negates the need for constant cross reference to a Bible and allows just one source for study. Profits from this book will be tithed and given for missionary service.

Following the design of a parallel Bible, with four columns side by side, the Revelation Chapter is the left-most column. In column #2 is the commentary on that Chapter with references to other verses and passages. To save the reader from searching for reference Books and verses, those Scriptures are printed in column #3 on the side-facing page. Column #4 consists of the commentary for the reference verses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction by Merrill C. Tenney: This commentary is an attempt to make plain the meaning of Revelation. With commendable reserve, Dr. Smith has restricted himself largely to interpretation by other passages of Scripture which are related to Revelation by actual quotation or by striking parallelism. His painstaking studies of vocabulary and of related ideas make the book valuable to the earnest student of the Bible. Dr. Smith is a futurist and a premillenarian, holding that all of the Book of Revelation beginning with the fourth chapter relates to the future period of judgment known as 'the great tribulation,' which will be followed by the personal return of Christ and by the establishment of His kingdom. In this regard he is in a long line of renowned commentators, including Seiss, Gaebelein, Ottman, and others. The distinguishing feature of this commentary is its use of Biblical statistics and comparisons. The uses of important terms in the Revelation are cataloged, and their interpretation is derived from their context. The appendices contain some extensive studies of individual topics, correlating information not easily obtainable elsewhere. Dr. Smith follows a literal interpretation except where avowed symbolism demands a different procedure. He has sought to make his exposition consistent in method and in results. His use of Greek is apt, and shows a careful investigation of the underlying vocabulary of the Greek text. This commentary will probably be the mainstay of premillennial exposition for some years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the most seasoned theologians to the newest Bible study student, A, B, Come and See Revelations enlightens each reader by demystifying one of the most complicated books of the bible. Bible scholars have tediously dedicated decades to the sole study of the book of Revelation, which has left many perplexed and unresolved. This is understandable because, although Revelations begins and ends like an ancient letter and identifies itself as prophecy, it contains edicts from the risen Christ—a sevenfold series of seven-part visions, hymns, hope for the faithful, condemnation for the unbeliever and is saturated with visually unimaginable supernatural and inexplicable beings. Occurrences are neither chronologically bound nor explicitly revealed by locations. However, author James Stroud provides a scriptural elixir by not simply relying on the book of Revelations itself, but he responsibly and exhaustively researches historical texts, maps, Greek and Hebrew manuscripts, ancient linguistics, along with other key components to bring clarity and relevancy to each passage. This author proves to be an expert in transforming what has been most often identified as a book of doom and gloom into an easy-to-decipher book revealing messages of encouragement, hope, and infinite love. In his thorough cross-referencing and deciphering of Old and New testament symbolism, it is made quite apparent that A, B, Come and See Revelations will lead you into the revelation of Jesus Christ. This book will quickly become a favorite staple in your reference library.
