Book excerpt: When the idea of penning down my memories of a life, varied across many facets, first struck the author, it was then little more than ticking off an item in a wish list. Gradually, this changed to be a more substantial effort, to a journal of life, a legacy of sorts to people who have made a difference to his life, for better or worse. When we think of human interactions and relationships, covering bonds of love, friendship, hatred and indifference, we soon realize that they are far more complex than the simple and deterministic laws of physics and chemistry. What we ‘know’ can only be understood through a multi-dimensional function of time, persona and many other unknown factors. Over the last six decades, the author has seen relationships change colour and shape, form and strength, not once but many times. Does that make us chameleons, in a sense? No, it is just that the human mind and heart resemble kaleidoscopes that keep generating different images, even if exactly the same stimulus is given, but at different points of time.

Book excerpt: “Never Back Down” is not only the title of an intensely personal journal, it is a phrase that has defined Shankar’s life for all of nearly seven decades. Trials and tribulations have challenged him at almost every turn, but that has not, in any way and ever, deflected him. The book charts out his journey from the chilly winter of his birth in a charity hospital in London, through a very troubled childhood, all the way to becoming one of the most respected cryogenic specialists in the country, literally working at temperatures that range from -271°C with liquid helium vessels to 1,700°C hanging above rivers of molten steel. In many ways, Shankar’s life has mirrored the epic transformation that has been the story of India. The pangs of a country finding its feet in an unforgiving world, the willingness to sacrifice its today for a glorious tomorrow and most importantly, never lose sight of its destiny. That is India, and that is Shankar. This journal is as honest an attempt to capture his journey, as could be.

Book excerpt: During the country’s partition in August 1947, I, the Author, was a 4 or 5 year old child from a very affluent family. We lived in a village in the Lyallpur district of present-day Pakistan. Upon the country’s partition, my family abandoned all our belongings and migrated empty-handed to free India and to an uncertain future. With no idea of our ultimate destination, we moved from one refugee camp to another, and spent a little over a year en route in several such camps, where the family survived on free dry rations provided by the authorities. We finally settled in Kishan Pura, a village in the Firozpur district of Punjab at the end of October 1948, and struggled every day for survival. After each meal, we did not know how and from where the next meal for our large family would come, and this struggle continued for over a year.

Book excerpt: Your success—and sanity—are closer at hand when you work at a higher level of abstraction, allowing your attention to be on the business problem rather than the details of the programming platform. Domain Specific Languages—"little languages" implemented on top of conventional programming languages—give you a way to do this because they model the domain of your business problem. DSLs in Action introduces the concepts and definitions a developer needs to build high-quality domain specific languages. It provides a solid foundation to the usage as well as implementation aspects of a DSL, focusing on the necessity of applications speaking the language of the domain. After reading this book, a programmer will be able to design APIs that make better domain models. For experienced developers, the book addresses the intricacies of domain language design without the pain of writing parsers by hand. The book discusses DSL usage and implementations in the real world based on a suite of JVM languages like Java, Ruby, Scala, and Groovy. It contains code snippets that implement real world DSL designs and discusses the pros and cons of each implementation. Purchase of the print book comes with an offer of a free PDF, ePub, and Kindle eBook from Manning. Also available is all code from the book. Book excerpt: Jackals Wedding, my story within a family story set in India, the land of my birth, tells of a past of puzzling opposites. "Tigers, and oil, and tea are all I remember," I once blithely answered an Indian professor whod taken me for a whirl. When he stopped dead, held me at arms length and searched my eyes, I had to think twice about the superficial untruth Id blurted. There were many parts of my early life Id locked away in the dark, just like my mother, and my grandmother before her. The good things that surfaced were idealized, airbrushed into scenes worthy of Kipling, or The Little Princess. I knew the romantic version, but what was the truth? What had really happened during those years in India? How had my mother and father became ensnared in a storm and sun relationship, a "jackals wedding," with my sister and me dragged along unwittingly? How had the exigencies of wartime prevented them from dealing with their own blow-ups? What was the big taboo within our family? Why so many secrets locked away, as my mothers heart had seemed locked to me? I was hungry to know the truth, so I began to dig down to the beginning through my first memories that are entwined with the unrest of the times. With a stroke of serendipity, my husband convinced me I must return to India, the land of my birth, and my childhood home in Dehra Dun. During this trip together, time spans were erased. People stepped forward to help. Images and voices and feelings came flooding back, and I was ready to examine them as Id examined the belongings that had traveled half the world in battered leather cases. Brought to light, the joys of my childhood flashed vivid and fragile as glass bangles. Fears that had lurked large as nightmare lions and scary as snakes dissolved like thunderheads shrinking and fading into a quiet sky. In Jackals Wedding, the stories of the child I was and the woman Ive become are braided with my mothers story and the stories she told. Many times during the writing, it seemed she was back, whispering in my ear what she wasnt able to tell, in life. I am still searching for my father.

Book excerpt: Winner of The Hindu Prize 2018 (Non-fiction) Shortlisted for the 3rd JIO MAMI Word to Screen Award 2018 If you insist that you do not know me, let me explain myself … you will feel, why, yes, I do know this person. I’ve seen this man. With these words, Manoranjan Byapari points to the inescapable roles all of us play in an unequal society. Interrogating My Chandal Life: An Autobiography of a Dalit is the translation of his remarkable memoir Itibritte Chandal Jivan. It talks about his traumatic life as a child in the refugee camps of West Bengal and Dandakaranya, facing persistent want—an experience that would dominate his life. The book charts his futile flight from home to escape hunger, in search of work as a teenager around the country, only to face further exploitation. In Kolkata in the 1970s, as a young man, he got caught up in the Naxalite movement and took part in gang warfare. His world changed dramatically when he was taught the alphabet in prison at the age of 24—it drew him into a new, enticing world of books. After prison, he worked as a rickshaw-wallah and one day the writer Mahasweta Devi happened to be his passenger. It was she who led him to his first publication. Today, as Sipra Mukherjee points out, ‘issues of poverty, hunger and violence have exploded the cautiously sewn boundaries of the more affluent world’, rendering archaic the comfortable distances between them. Despite ‘Chandal’ explicitly referring to a Dalit caste, this narrative weaves in and out of the margins.

Book excerpt: Summary Functional and Reactive Domain Modeling teaches you how to think of the domain model in terms of pure functions and how to compose them to build larger abstractions. Purchase of the print book includes a free eBook in PDF, Kindle, and ePub formats from Manning Publications. About the Technology Traditional distributed applications won't cut it in the reactive world of microservices, fast data, and sensor networks. To capture their dynamic relationships and dependencies, these systems require a different approach to domain modeling. A domain model composed of pure functions is a more natural way of representing a process in a reactive system, and it maps directly onto technologies and patterns like Akka, CQRS, and event sourcing. About the Book Functional and Reactive Domain Modeling teaches you consistent, repeatable techniques for building domain models in reactive systems. This book reviews the relevant concepts of FP and reactive architectures and then methodically introduces this new approach to domain modeling. As you read, you'll learn where and how to apply it, even if your systems aren't purely reactive or functional. An expert blend of theory and practice, this book presents strong examples you'll return to again and again as you apply these principles to your own projects. What's Inside Real-world libraries and frameworks Establish meaningful reliability guarantees Isolate domain logic from side effects Introduction to reactive design patterns About the Reader Readers should be comfortable with functional programming and traditional domain modeling. Examples use the Scala language. About the Author Software architect Debasish Ghosh was an early adopter of reactive design using Scala and Akka.
