Book excerpt: A biometric algorithm for personal recognition by identification or verification of the person from his/her Arabic handwriting is presented. The system is online and text-independent. Dynamic data pertaining to handwriting, such as pressure, altitude and azimuth is collected from the user during the writing process, and is used to train models for each writer, after which a recognition system is developed for implementation. The focus in this work is to achieve a high recognition rate with minimal requirements for data and processing time. Based on our experimental results, a system based on Gaussian mixture models (GMM) yields the best classification performance. A full system is developed with a MATLAB-based Graphical User Interface and the Wacom Intuos4 digitizer tablet. We have achieved a best identification rate of 96% for writer identification; whereas for verification, we have obtained an FAR of 4.26% and an FRR of 4.00 %.

Shortly, we will see many new exciting applications for cryptography such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for anti-counterfeiting. As a consequence of the pervasiveness of crypto algorithms, an increasing number of people must understand how they work and how they can be applied in practice. This book addresses this issue by providing a comprehensive introduction to modern applied cryptography that is equally suited for students and practitioners in industry. Much of the focus is on practical relevance by introducing most crypto algorithms that are used in modern real-world applications. In addition to crypto algorithms, attention is also given to important cryptographic protocols, modes of operation, security services, and key establishment techniques. Timely topics include lightweight ciphers, which are optimized for constrained applications. In today’s fast-paced world, security and convenience are paramount. Biometrics, the science of identifying individuals based on their unique physical or behavioral traits, offers a solution that is both secure and convenient. From fingerprint scanners on smartphones to facial recognition software at airports, biometrics is rapidly becoming an integral part of our daily lives. But what exactly is biometrics, and how does it work? This book delves into the fascinating world of biometrics, exploring its history, applications, and the latest technological advancements. You’ll discover how biometrics can be used to verify identity, control access, and even detect fraud. Whether you’re a security professional, a technology enthusiast, or simply curious about the future of personal identification, this book is for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the invention of computers and other similar machines, scientists and researchers have been trying very hard to enhance their capabilities to perform various tasks. As a result, the capabilities of computers are growing exponentially day by day in terms of diverse working domains, versatile jobs, processing speed, and reduced size. Now, we are in the race to make these machines as intelligent as human beings. Artificial intelligence (AI) came up as a way of making a computer or computer software think in a similar manner to the way that humans think. AI is inspired by the study of human brain, including how humans think, learn, decide, and act while trying to solve a problem. The outcomes of this study are the basis of developing intelligent software and systems or intelligent computing (IC). An IC system has the capabilities of reasoning, learning, problem-solving, perception, and linguistic intelligence. IC systems consist of AI techniques as well as other emerging techniques that make a system intelligent. The use of IC has been seen in almost every sub-domain of computer science such as networking, software engineering, gaming, natural language processing, computer vision, image processing, data science, robotics, expert systems, and security. Nowadays, IC is also useful for solving various complex problems in diverse domains such as for predicting disease in medical science, predicting land fertility or crop productivity in agricultural science, predicting market growth in economics, and weather forecasting. For all these reasons, this book presents the advances in AI techniques, under the umbrella of IC. In this context, the book includes recent research that has been done in the areas of machine learning, neural networks, deep learning, evolutionary algorithms, genetic algorithms, swarm intelligence, fuzzy systems, and so on. This book discusses recent theoretical, algorithmic, simulation, and implementation-based advancements related to IC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biometric recognition, or simply biometrics, is the science of establishing the identity of a person based on physical or behavioral attributes. It is a rapidly evolving field with applications ranging from securely accessing one’s computer to gaining entry into a country. While the deployment of large-scale biometric systems in both commercial and government applications has increased the public awareness of this technology, "Introduction to Biometrics" is the first textbook to introduce the fundamentals of Biometrics to undergraduate/graduate students. The three commonly used modalities in the biometrics field, namely, fingerprint, face, and iris are covered in detail in this book. Few other modalities like hand geometry, ear, and gait are also discussed briefly along with advanced topics such as multibiometric systems and security of biometric systems. Exercises for each chapter will be available on the book website to help students gain a better understanding of the topics and obtain practical experience in designing computer programs for biometric applications. These can be found at: http://www.csee.wvu.edu/~ross/BiometricsTextBook/. Designed for undergraduate and graduate students in computer science and electrical engineering, "Introduction to Biometrics" is also suitable for researchers and biometric and computer security professionals.

Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.
