Book excerpt: This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition devoted to the many works that the Catalan-American painter Pierre Daura created throughout his career in response to his personal relationships. His courtship, his marriage to an American, the birth of his daughter Martha, his family's home life in St. Cirq-La-Popie, his service in the Spanish Civil War, his exile to the United States during World War II and his wife's illness and death represent events to which Daura responded with deeply personal images that can be counted among his most beautiful, original and moving works, whether on paper, canvas or wood.--Amazon.com.

Download or read book Pierre Daura, 1896-1976 written by Teresa Macià and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some books are definitive, and some lead to other projects which turn out to be definitive--if we accept that anything is ever final, particularly in the study and interpretation of works of art. Nonetheless, in the attempt to sketch out an artist's career, his points of reference and his convictions, there are certain steps we have to take. This book by Teresa Macià on the Catalan, French and American painter, Pierre Daura, is the first step in the analysis of this artist, carried out by a person who has become the foremost authority on his work. This is not only because of her research, which is always necessary, but also because of her personal involvement in the rediscovery and publicizing of the artist, in close collaboration with Martha Daura, the painter's daughter. -- Pg.7.

Book Synopsis The New Anthology of American Poetry by : Steven Gould Axelrod
Download or read book The New Anthology of American Poetry written by Steven Gould Axelrod and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Gould Axelrod, Camille Roman, and Thomas Travisano continue the standard of excellence set in Volumes I and II of this extraordinary anthology. Volume III provides the most compelling and wide-ranging selection available of American poetry from 1950 to the present. Its contents are just as diverse and multifaceted as America itself and invite readers to explore the world of poetry in the larger historical context of American culture. Nearly three hundred poems allow readers to explore canonical works by such poets as Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, and Sylvia Plath, as well as song lyrics from such popular musicians as Bob Dylan and Queen Latifah. Because contemporary American culture transcends the borders of the continental United States, the anthology also includes numerous transnational poets, from Julia de Burgos to Derek Walcott. Whether they are the works of oblique avant-gardists like John Ashbery or direct, populist poets like Allen Ginsberg, all of the selections are accompanied by extensive introductions and footnotes, making the great poetry of the period fully accessible to readers for the first time.

Book excerpt: Lofthouse (fellow, modern history, Oxford U.) sketches an overview of "the vitalist moment" of the early 20th century--"a moment which re-enchanted life in the face of mechanistic onslaught, sought a reprieve from the more demoralizing implications of evolutionary inquiry and left open a space for spirit or even God in nature"--then pursues vitalism in modernism and modern art. He emphasizes Germany and Great Britain, focusing on the artists Dix, Spencer, Beckmann, and Epstein. The study includes nine color plates and about a dozen b&w images of the four artists and their work. Annotation :2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

Book Synopsis One Hundred American Paintings by : Georgia Museum of Art
Download or read book One Hundred American Paintings written by Georgia Museum of Art and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue of the Georgia Museum of Art's permanent collection is both a tribute to Alfred Heber Holbrook, the museum's founder, and a record of his legacy, which began in 1945 when he gave one hundred works of American art to the people of Georgia through its flagship university. These works formed the foundation of the museum's current collection of more than 8,000 art objects. Published to coincide with the museum's grand reopening in January 2011 after a 30,000-square-foot expansion, this catalogue features one hundred significant American paintings that, for the first time, will be on continual display in the building's new permanent-collection galleries. This publication is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Book Synopsis The Museums and Collections of Higher Education by : Andrew Simpson
Download or read book The Museums and Collections of Higher Education written by Andrew Simpson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Museums and Collections of Higher Education provides an analysis of the historic connections between materiality and higher education, developed through diverse examples of global practice. Outlining the different value propositions that museums and collections bring to higher education, the historic link between objects, evidence and academic knowledge is examined with reference to the origin point of both types of organisation. Museums and collections bring institutional reflection, cross-disciplinary bridges, digital extension options and participatory potential. Given the two primary sources of text and object, a singular source type predisposes a knowledge system to epistemic stasis, whereas mixed sources develop the potential for epistemic disruption and possible change. Museums and collections, therefore, are essential in the academies of higher learning. With the many challenges confronting humanity, it is argued that connecting intellect with social action for societal change through university museums should be a contemporary manifestation of the social contract of universities. Much has been written about museums and universities, but there is little about university museums and collections. This book will interest museum scholars and practitioners especially those unaware that university museums are at the forefront of museological creativity. It will also be of interest to academics and the growing number of leaders and managers in the modern university.
