Book excerpt: Few twentieth-century writers are as revered as William Faulkner. This collection brings together the best literary criticism on Faulkner from the last six decades, detailing the imaginative and passionate responses to his still-controversial novels. By focusing on the criticism rather than the works, Linda Wagner-Martin shows the primary directions in Faulkner's influence on critics, writers, and students of American literature today. This invaluable volume reveals the patterns of change in literary criticism over time, while exploring the various critical streams--language theory, feminism, deconstruction, and psychoanalysis--that have elevated Faulkner's work to the highest rank of the American literary pantheon.

Convenient, comprehensive and targeted to current coursework, the guides put authors, titles and topics into context for high school and college students as well as general researchers. Not to be confused with uninspiring reference "notes" that spoon-feed students essay answers, the Gale Study Guides to Great Literature feature original material designed to compliment the research process. These series give educators and researchers a source featuring not only literary movements and biographical data but also discussions of significant cultural and historical aspects of literature. Literary Masterpieces volumes provide comprehensive analyses of major literary works, including concise discussions of characters, themes and critical reception of the work. In the Literary Masterpieces Series, look for these chapters: -- About the Title -- The Evolution of the Work -- Themes -- Critical Response -- The Work in History -- And more
Book Synopsis Faulkner's Artistic Vision by : Ryūichi Yamaguchi
Download or read book Faulkner's Artistic Vision written by Ryūichi Yamaguchi and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although William Faulkner's imagination is often considered solely tragic, it actually blended what Faulkner himself called the bizarre and the terrible. Not only did Faulkner's vision encompass both comedy and tragedy; it perceived a latent humor in tragedy and vice versa. As a result, Faulkner's fiction is seldom simply comic or simply tragic. Faulkner's comedy incorporates tragedy and despair, and the humor in his novels may serve as well to intensify as to relieve a tragic or horrific effect. This study examines Faulkner's first nine novels, from Soldiers' Pay to Absalom, Absalom!, showing how humor is used to express theme: how it appears in the action, characters, and discourse of each novel; and how it contributes to the overall effect of each novel. In each case, even in the most pained and angry novels, Faulkner's practice of humor expresses his view that humor is an inseparable element of human experience. Ryuichi Yamaguchi is Professor of English and American literature at the Aichi University in Japan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vivid story of twenty-four hours in the real and remembered lives of a brother and sister living in Gaza and separated from their family. Ghassan Kanafani’s writings are among the most influential in modern Palestinian literature. In his novels, short stories, and plays, he explores complex political questions encased in beautiful narratives and lyrical prose. All That's Left to You presents the vivid story of twenty-four hours in the real and remembered lives of a brother and sister living in Gaza and separated from their family. The desert and time emerge as characters as Kanafani speaks through the desert, the brother, and the sister to build the powerful rhythm of the narrative. The Palestinian attachment to land and family, and the sorrow over their loss, are symbolized by the young man’s unremitting anger and shame over his sister’s sexual disgrace. This remarkable collection of stories provides evidence to the English-reading public of Kanafani’s position within modern Arabic literature. Not only was he committed to portraying the miseries and aspirations of his people, the Palestinians, in whose cause he died, but he was also an innovator within the extensive world of Arabic fiction.
