Com este objetivo, avaliaram-se milhos (Zea mays L.), sorto a producao de materia seca (MS), valor nutritivo e qualidade de silagem, obtida em solos de polietino. Os milhos produziram 10 a 11 t/ha MS, com populacoes de 50000 plantas/ha. Os sorgos e milhetos produziram no 1o corte valores semelhantes ao milho com 300.000 plantas/has, mas forneceram um segundo corte, perfazendo 17 a 18 t/ha MS em sorgos e 13 a 15 t/ha em milhetos. Todas as silagens apresentaram pH=4,0 e os valores mais altos de proteina bruta nas silagens (2,57% e 2,78%) e digestibilidade "in vitro"da MS (55, 3% e 59,8%), foram obtidos em muolhetos, mostrando-se superiores as silagens de milho, consideradas como padroes, e as de sorgo, que apresentaram os valores mais baixos.

Leeke) e sorgo Sordan NK (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) foi conduzido na Estacao Experimental Agronomica da UFRGS, Guaiba, RS. Estas especies foram avaliadas sob pastejo de 21/12/77 a 09/05/78 em relacao a producao e disponibilidade de materia seca, a proteina bruta, ao teor de carbohidratos nao estruturais, as digestibilidades da materia seca e da materia organica, ao ganho de peso medio diario e ao ganho de peso vivo por hectare. Milheto comum e sorgo Sordan NK foram semelhantes em producao e disponibilidade de materia seca, porem o segundo apresentou 22% de superioridade de producao de materia seca em relacao ao primeiro. Os teores de proteina bruta das duas especies foram equivalentes, assim como o teor de carboidratos nao estruturais, muito embora para este parametro o milheto Comum tenha apresentado valores medios maiores que o sorgo Sordan NK. Ambas as especies mostraram valores semelhantes e a mesma tendencia em relacao as digestibilidades da materia seca e da materia organica, entretanto o milheto apresentou valores medios mais altos que o sorgo. Os valores obtidos para ganho de peso medio diario e ganho de peso vivo por hectare foram semelhantes para as duas especies estudadas, todavia, o milheto apresentou valores de ganho de peso medio diario superiores em quase todos os periodos e produziu 75 kg de peso vivo por hectare a mais que o sorgo. ...

Book excerpt: Este trabalho foi realizado no Campo Experimental de Sao Bento do Una (PE). Estudaram-se os efeitos da adubacao organica em milho (Zea mays L.), sorgo (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) e capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.). Foram utilizados estrume de curral nas quantidades de zero, dez, 20 e 30 toneladas por hectare e cama de aviario zero, cinco, dez e quinze t/ha. As adubacoes foram realizadas anualmente, no inicio da estacao chuvosa. Foram obtidas producoes de 7,4, 10,0 e 13,3 t/M.S./ha para o milho, sorgo e capim-elefante, respectivamente. As adubacoes elevaram linearmente a producao de materia seca do milho, enquanto para o sorgo houve resposta quadratica pela adubacao com estrume de curral e, linear com cama de aviario. Para o capim-elefante, o efeito foi linear com estrume de bovino quadratico, com cama de aviario. O teor proteico das forrageiras foi pouco afetado pelas adubacoes. O menor teor de celulose foi encontrado para o milho, seguindo-se o sorgo e o capim-elefante. As adubacoes organicas nao afetaram os percentuais de espiga do milho e da panicula do sorgo, em relacao ao peso verde e seco da planta. O teor de materia organica no solo foi aumentado pelas adubacoes.

Book excerpt: Phytomass and Primary Production of the Various Vegetational Zones and of the Entire Biosphere The biosphere is that thin layer at the earth's surface in which living organisms exist and biological cycling takes place. It includes the upper horizons of the soil in which plants root, the atmosphere near the ground, (insofar as organisms penetrate this space), and all the surface waters. More than 99% of the earth's biomass is phytomass, to which we shall limit our discussion. Amounts of phytomass are distinctly related to vegeta tional zones. Because accurate determination of phytomass and primary production is difficult, only gross estimates have been available until recently. However, in 1970, Bazilevich et al. published (in Russian) more accurate calculations, based on the rapidly accumulating literature, for the various thermal zones and bioclimatic regions of the earth. These authors calculated mean phyto mass and mean annual primary production for the various regions as dry mass (in tons) per hectare. On the basis of measurements of the areas covered by the individual regions, excluding rivers, lakes, glaciers, and permanent snow, total phytomass and total annual primary production for the various regions were obtained (see table). The sum of these figures is the phytomass and annual production of the land surface of the earth. In addition, the table gives corresponding data for the waters of the earth. The values involved are potential i. e. , they are based on natural vegetation uninfluenced by man.

In a second printing in 1988 it was possible to complete a few literature references and to correct some misprints. However, vigorous research has taken place over the past five years in various areas of tropical climate dynamics, especially in the atmosphere-ocean mechanisms of climate anomalies, climate prediction, ocean circulation, and paleoclimates. Promising progress has also been made in the application of general circulation modelling to tropical climate problems. In the present second edition, named "Climate Dynamics of the Tropics", I have attempted to incorporate much of the recent work to late 1990. Chapters 8 and 9 have been essentially re-written, and major additions have been made to Chapters 4 and 12 in particular. I would like to acknowledge the continued support by the U.S. National Science Foundation over the past five years. B. Parthasarathy, Poona, and H. Lessmann, San Salvador, sent me updates of data series not easily accessible. I have benefitted from discussions with numerous colleagues in the United States and overseas. In order to understand the recent composition of local floras and plant communities a second knowledge of species com position during recent millenia is essential. With the present concern over climate changes, due to human activities, an understanding of past vegeta tion distribution becomes even more important, since the correlation between climate and vegetation can often be used to predict possible impacts to crops and forests. I was very fortunate to receive the help of Drs. Webb and Huntley to compile this volume on vegetation history. They have collated an impres sive set of papers which together give an account of the vegetation history of most of the continents during the late-Tertiary and Quaternery periods. There are, however, gaps in the coverage achieved, most notably Africa, and Asia apart from Japan. The information in this book will nonetheless certainly be used widely by vegetation scientists for the regions covered in the book and much of it has relevance to the areas not explicitly described. The authors of the individual chapters have done their best to cover recent topics of interest as well as established facts. It is intended that a separate volume will be produced in the near future covering the vegetation history of Africa and Asia. I thank the editors of It fits well into the this volume for their commendable achievement.
