Book excerpt: 85 Stroke Preventing Juice and Meal Recipes: The Stroke-Survivors Guide to Healthy Living By Joe Correa CSN There are several important symptoms of a stroke that shouldn't be ignored. The most common symptoms include a serious headache, confusion, trouble speaking and understanding, unexplained vomiting, inability to move parts of the body, trouble seeing in one or both eyes, trouble walking, dizziness, and lack of coordination. None of the above-described symptoms should be taken lightly and they require immediate medical attention. The three types of strokes are: 1.Ischemic Stroke 2.Hemorrhagic Stroke 3.Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) Having a stroke is serious and is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke with about 85% of all strokes. The cause for this type of stroke is a partial or complete blockage of the arteries that provide blood to the brain. This medical condition results in damaged brain cells. The cause of a hemorrhagic stroke is having leaking arteries in the brain. This extra blood puts pressure on the brain cells and damages them. Finally, the transient ischemic attack occurs with a brief blood flow interruption. However, this type of stroke should be regarded as a medical emergency, just like any other type of stroke. There are several important symptoms of a stroke that shouldn't be ignored. When it comes to preventing a stroke, a healthy lifestyle and diet high in fiber and low in refined sugars is necessary. I have created a collection of stroke preventing recipes that will boost your immune system and improve your entire health. Just a couple of minutes every day is enough to prepare these wonderful juices and the health benefits are beyond measure. Soon enough you will start feeling better than ever before. Try them all!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the physician behind the wildly popular NutritionFacts website, How Not to Die reveals the groundbreaking scientific evidence behind the only diet that can prevent and reverse many of the causes of disease-related death. The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America-heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more-and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives. The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The fifteen leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn't have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger's advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer. History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet whenever you can. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug-and without the side effects. Fighting off liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (the number 1 killer in the United States)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to prevent the disease but often stop it in its tracks. In addition to showing what to eat to help treat the top fifteen causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen -a checklist of the twelve foods we should consume every day.Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor's orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives.

Book excerpt: This book by the National Institutes of Health (Publication 06-4082) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute provides information and effective ways to work with your diet because what you choose to eat affects your chances of developing high blood pressure, or hypertension (the medical term). Recent studies show that blood pressure can be lowered by following the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan-and by eating less salt, also called sodium. While each step alone lowers blood pressure, the combination of the eating plan and a reduced sodium intake gives the biggest benefit and may help prevent the development of high blood pressure. This book, based on the DASH research findings, tells how to follow the DASH eating plan and reduce the amount of sodium you consume. It offers tips on how to start and stay on the eating plan, as well as a week of menus and some recipes. The menus and recipes are given for two levels of daily sodium consumption-2,300 and 1,500 milligrams per day. Twenty-three hundred milligrams is the highest level considered acceptable by the National High Blood Pressure Education Program. It is also the highest amount recommended for healthy Americans by the 2005 "U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans." The 1,500 milligram level can lower blood pressure further and more recently is the amount recommended by the Institute of Medicine as an adequate intake level and one that most people should try to achieve. The lower your salt intake is, the lower your blood pressure. Studies have found that the DASH menus containing 2,300 milligrams of sodium can lower blood pressure and that an even lower level of sodium, 1,500 milligrams, can further reduce blood pressure. All the menus are lower in sodium than what adults in the United States currently eat-about 4,200 milligrams per day in men and 3,300 milligrams per day in women. Those with high blood pressure and prehypertension may benefit especially from following the DASH eating plan and reducing their sodium intake.
