Book excerpt: "Walking across the Peace Bridge connecting Buffalo and Ft. Erie, Ont., I'm amazed at what's happened to my life in the last, what, I'll figure it out, yeah, 600 days or so. When did it all start? Where did it go right, or wrong as most people might say? "It's pretty clear my own country only wants me so I can be sent to Vietnam to fight and kill or be killed. And if I'm not snatched up by the Army, what, I'll continue to be harassed and thrown in jails for no good reasons. No way; I'm making the best decision by getting out. I just hope I can find her in Toronto and that she's OK."

Book Synopsis Modern Prestressed Concrete by : James R. Libby
Download or read book Modern Prestressed Concrete written by James R. Libby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written with a dual purpose, as a reference book for practicing engineers and as a textbook for students of prestressed concrete. It represents the fifth generation of books on this subject written by its author. Significant additions and revisions have been made in this edition. Chapters 2 and 3 contain new material intended to assist the engineer in understanding factors affecting the time-dependent properties of the reinforcement and concrete used in prestressing concrete, as well as to facilitate the evaluation of their effects on prestress loss and deflection. Flexural strength, shear strength, and bond of prestressed concrete members were treated in a single chapter in the of flexural strength has third edition. Now, in the fourth edition, the treatment been expanded, with more emphasis on strain compatibility, and placed in Chapter 5 which is devoted to this subject alone. Chapter 6 of this edition, on flexural-shear strength, torsional strength, and bond of prestressed reinforce ment, was expanded to include discussions of Compression Field Theory and torsion that were not treated in the earlier editions. In similar fashion, expanded discussions of loss of prestress, deflection, and partial prestressing now are presented separately, in Chapter 7. Minor additions and revisions have been made to the material contained in the remaining chapters with the exception of xv xvi I PREFACE Chapter 17. This chapter, which is devoted to construction considerations, has important new material on constructibility and tolerances as related to prestressed concrete.

Book Synopsis Uncertainty Analyses in Environmental Sciences and Hydrogeology by : Rachid Ababou
Download or read book Uncertainty Analyses in Environmental Sciences and Hydrogeology written by Rachid Ababou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-21 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights several methods and quantitative implementations of both probabilistic and fuzzy-based approaches to uncertainty quantification and uncertainty propagation through environmental subsurface pollution models with uncertain input parameters. The book focuses on methods as well as applications in hydrogeology, soil hydrology, groundwater contamination, and related areas (e.g., corrosion of nuclear waste canisters). The methods are illustrated for a broad spectrum of models, from non-differential I/O models to complex PDE solvers, including a novel 3D quasi-analytical model of contaminant transport, and a site-specific computer model of dissolved contaminant migration from a DNAPL (Dense Non Aqueous Phase Liquid) pollution source.

Book Synopsis Day Fines in Europe by : Elena Kantorowicz-Reznichenko
Download or read book Day Fines in Europe written by Elena Kantorowicz-Reznichenko and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Day fines, as a pecuniary sanction, have a great potential to reduce inequality in the criminal sentencing system, as they impose the same relative punishment on all offenders irrespective of their income. Furthermore, with correct implementation, they can constitute an alternative sanction to the more repressive and not always efficient short-term prison sentences. Finally, by independently expressing in the sentence the severity and the income of the offender, day fines can increase uniformity and transparency of sentencing. Having this in mind, almost half of the European Union countries have adopted day fines in their criminal justice system. For the first time, this book makes their findings accessible to a wider international audience. Aimed at scholars, policy makers and criminal law practitioners, it provides an opportunity to learn about the theoretical advantages, the practical challenges, the successes and failures, and ways to improve.
Book Synopsis Life Support Systems Analysis and Technical Trades for a Lunar Outpost by : J. F. Ferrall
Download or read book Life Support Systems Analysis and Technical Trades for a Lunar Outpost written by J. F. Ferrall and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NASA/JPL life support systems analysis (LISSA) software tool was used to perform life support system analysis and technology trades for a Lunar Outpost. The life support system was modeled using a chemical process simulation program on a steady-state, one-person, daily basis. Inputs to the LiSSA model include metabolic balance load data, hygiene load data, technology selection, process operational assumptions and mission parameter assumptions. A baseline set of technologies has been used against which comparisons have been made by running twenty-two cases with technology substitutions.
