Book excerpt: "Spufford cunningly maps out a literary genre of his own . . . Freewheeling and fabulous." —The Times (London) Strange as it may seem, the gray, oppressive USSR was founded on a fairy tale. It was built on the twentieth-century magic called "the planned economy," which was going to gush forth an abundance of good things that the lands of capitalism could never match. And just for a little while, in the heady years of the late 1950s, the magic seemed to be working. Red Plenty is about that moment in history, and how it came, and how it went away; about the brief era when, under the rash leadership of Khrushchev, the Soviet Union looked forward to a future of rich communists and envious capitalists, when Moscow would out-glitter Manhattan and every Lada would be better engineered than a Porsche. It's about the scientists who did their genuinely brilliant best to make the dream come true, to give the tyranny its happy ending. Red Plenty is history, it's fiction, it's as ambitious as Sputnik, as uncompromising as an Aeroflot flight attendant, and as different from what you were expecting as a glass of Soviet champagne.

Book excerpt: This test prep is good for kids who are on the fence and having trouble passing, or need to increase their margin. These kids will often say "I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START" when explaining their confusion. This book address that problem with three approaches.1) In contrast with the other study guides that use random questions in their practice exams; this book collated the questions into chapters based on the logic to solve them. The 4th The grade book is divided into seven chapters. They are Logic, Arithmetic, Geometry, Fractions, Reading Graphs and tables, Measurements including a ruler, and basic statistics. This book teaches basics then goes into practice exams with word problems. Once the student is proficient with the questions organized into chapters then they are ready for random questions.2) This study guide has thousands of practice problems. I have placed over 3100 videos on YouTube showing you how to work the problems3) I reviewed several years of past exams and placed enfaces on the easiest and most common questions. Mastering these questions should yield a 75% to 80%. If a student is already achieving this percentage; the other guides or web site with random questions and covering all material might be best.A book might be better for your student than the web sites for two reasons. 1) The more common and easiest questions are using a ruler to measure. The web designers don't know the size of your computer screen and can't determine if the student has measured correctly. We can get a high percentage of these problems easily.2) When studying on a computer there are too many websites with the answers. With a book; parents can have greater assurance the work is being done. This book is developed by a trained professional out of concern. It is not the product of a large publishing house. It is the results of one person who wants to help.Best RegardsMark Shannon

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Michiko lives in Los Angeles and is Peruvian and Japanese. Each of them is Latino. Thirteen young Latinos and Latinas living in America are introduced in this book celebrating the rich diversity of the Latino and Latina experience in the United States. Free-verse fictional narratives from the perspective of each youth provide specific stories and circumstances for the reader to better understand the Latino people’s quest for identity. Each profile is followed by nonfiction prose that further clarifies the character’s background and history, touching upon important events in the history of the Latino American people, such as the Spanish Civil War, immigration to the US, and the internment of Latinos with Japanese ancestry during World War II. Alma Flor Ada and F. Isabel Campoy’s informational yet heartwarming text provides a resource for young Latino readers to see themselves, while also encouraging non-Latino children to understand the breadth and depth of the contributions made by Latinos in the US. Caldecott Medalist David Diaz’s hand-cut illustrations are bold and striking, perfectly complementing the vibrant stories in the book. YES! WE ARE LATINOS stands alone in its presentation of the broad spectrum of Latino culture and will appeal to readers of fiction and nonfiction.

Book excerpt: "Writing allows each of us to live with that special wide-awakeness that comes from knowing that our lives and our ideas are worth writing about." -Lucy Calkins Teaching Writing is Lucy Calkins at her best-a distillation of the work that's placed Lucy and her colleagues at the forefront of the teaching of writing for over thirty years. This book promises to inspire teachers to teach with renewed passion and power and to invigorate the entire school day. This is a book for readers who want an introduction to the writing workshop, and for those who've lived and breathed this work for decades. Although Lucy addresses the familiar topics-the writing process, conferring, kinds of writing, and writing assessment- she helps us see those topics with new eyes. She clears away the debris to show us the teeny details, and she shows us the majesty and meaning, too, in these simple yet powerful teaching acts. Download a sample chapter for more information.

Book excerpt: Summer reading is essential for young students to retain skills and knowledge learned in the prior school year. Students who don't read risk lagging behind their classmates. Teachers and parents can avoid this by ensuring their children take time to read during the summer months. Reading during summer vacation may not be very exciting for children, but teachers and parents should make it one. Summer reading is necessary for a child's ability to retain information learned the previous year, and also to grow in knowledge and critical thinking skills for the upcoming year. Many believe that it is necessary for children to read on a daily basis in order to maintain literacy skills learned in the previous school year. Reading is extremely effective at building up a child's knowledge in a large amount of subject areas, including English, math, science and history. Studies of children who read during the summer months discovered a much greater intellectual progress in vocabulary, spelling and math than that of a child not reading during summer break. Reading is a strong tool for developing comprehension skills and basic knowledge of the world. Cchildren who read during the summer vacation stay ahead of their classmates during the school year. Summer reading is most important for maintaining a child's current grade level abilities and for developing skills above the current grade level. Encouraging our children to read is critical to keeping them on track with their peers and retain knowledge over the summer break. If you are unsure of what your children should be reading, there are a multitude of reading lists available at school, libraries, and online. Help your child by teaching them responsibility by having them complete the Book Reading Review book. The large size makes it easy to write about a book just read.
