Book excerpt: 47 Alzheimer's Preventing Juice Recipes: Naturally Lower the Risk of Alzheimer's disease without the use of Pills By Joe Correa CSN Alzheimer's disease is a disease that gradually destroys nerve cells and links between them. The greatest risk factor for this disease comes with age, the majority of people with Alzheimer's are 65 and older. However, I have to point out that it's not necessary to enter a certain age for the disease to develop. About 200,000 Americans under the age of 65 have what is known as ''early-onset Alzheimer's''. Over time, the disease leads to communication and understanding difficulties, memory loss, and abnormal behavior including loss of interest and even aggression. Alzheimer's disease is an extremely serious disease and the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. This is why it's very important to recognize the symptoms without confusing them with a normal old age behavior. Alzheimer's disease, unfortunately, doesn't have a cure. However, there are some treatments for the symptoms that will not stop but will slow down the disease from progressing and improve the quality of life. The exact cause of Alzheimer's is still unknown, but statistics suggest that women are more exposed to this disease. Doctors believe that specific factors combined together can greatly increase the risks and lead to Alzheimer's disease. People suffering from arthritis, poor eye sight, weak bones, depression, and hypertension are more likely to develop this serious disease. Naturally, poor diet and lack of exercise can develop a fertile ground for Alzheimer's. Processed foods with lots of sugar, lack of vitamins and minerals, and trans fats are some of the habits that have the ability to harm your body in ways you can't even imagine. These poor diet habits directly weaken the entire body reducing brain functions. In order to prevent and reduce the risks of Alzheimer's disease, it's crucial to change your lifestyle and improve your diet. Brain-friendly foods like green leafy vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, fish, and olive oil should be on your daily menu. Having this in mind, I have created a beautiful collection of Alzheimer's disease preventing juice recipes that are based on fresh and healthy ingredients and will improve your overall health and brain function. These juices were carefully chosen to provide all the nutrients your body needs every single day of the year. Furthermore, they are extremely delicious and very easy to prepare. Make sure to try them all

Book excerpt: With over 200 delicious recipes and the latest scientific research, bestselling author Maggie Beer and leading Alzheimer’s researcher Professor Ralph Martins show us how to eat and live well to promote optimum brain health to help fight one of the most debilitating diseases of our later years. This second edition contains a new introduction and 13 recipes from the ABC TV series Maggie Beer’s Big Mission. This book is so important to me. To have a healthy old age you must act now, whether you are 30 or 50. I have two great passions – sharing my love of cooking delicious, simple food and improving the health and nutrition of older people. I hope this cookbook does both but it’s not for ‘old’ people, it’s for you. I have been delighted to work with leading Alzheimer’s researcher Professor Ralph Martins in recent years and I have learned that if we are to avoid Alzheimer’s and other lifestyle diseases it is what we eat today that matters. These are my recipes for every day, for everybody, full of deep flavours and beautiful ingredients that will nourish you and your family. Nobody wants to eat worthy food that tastes like cardboard. For me, food without flavour is unthinkable! And so is the notion of restricting whole food groups. My recipe for life is to have a healthy attitude to eating – it’s all about balance, variety and choosing foods that give you the best chance of being in good health now and into your future. This is not a diet book – it’s a way of life. This new edition includes recipes from my ABC TV show Maggie Beer’s Big Mission. ~ Maggie Beer Maggie Beer and Professor Ralph Martins have teamed up to fight one of the most debilitating diseases of our later years. Based on the latest scientific research, Maggie has created more than 200 recipes that help provide the nutrients we need for optimum brain health. More than one million Australians are affected every day by Alzheimer’s, directly or indirectly, but the good news is that you can eat well to age well, from this moment on. The proceeds from Maggie’s Recipe for Life are shared between the Maggie Beer Foundation and the Lions Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Book excerpt: The instant New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller A groundbreaking plan to prevent and reverse Alzheimer’s Disease that fundamentally changes how we understand cognitive decline. Everyone knows someone who has survived cancer, but until now no one knows anyone who has survived Alzheimer's Disease. In this paradigm shifting book, Dale Bredesen, MD, offers real hope to anyone looking to prevent and even reverse Alzheimer's Disease and cognitive decline. Revealing that AD is not one condition, as it is currently treated, but three, The End of Alzheimer’s outlines 36 metabolic factors (micronutrients, hormone levels, sleep) that can trigger "downsizing" in the brain. The protocol shows us how to rebalance these factors using lifestyle modifications like taking B12, eliminating gluten, or improving oral hygiene. The results are impressive. Of the first ten patients on the protocol, nine displayed significant improvement with 3-6 months; since then the protocol has yielded similar results with hundreds more. Now, The End of Alzheimer’s brings new hope to a broad audience of patients, caregivers, physicians, and treatment centers with a fascinating look inside the science and a complete step-by-step plan that fundamentally changes how we treat and even think about AD.

Book excerpt: From the physician behind the wildly popular NutritionFacts website, How Not to Die reveals the groundbreaking scientific evidence behind the only diet that can prevent and reverse many of the causes of disease-related death. The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America-heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more-and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives. The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The fifteen leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn't have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger's advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer. History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet whenever you can. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug-and without the side effects. Fighting off liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (the number 1 killer in the United States)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to prevent the disease but often stop it in its tracks. In addition to showing what to eat to help treat the top fifteen causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen -a checklist of the twelve foods we should consume every day.Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor's orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For women approaching or in menopause, a revolutionary diet and holistic lifestyle program for easier weight loss, better sleep, diminished hot flashes, a clearer head, and a rejuvenated sex drive. “Hormone balance is within reach, and this is the definitive guide for reaching that goal.”—David Perlmutter, MD, author of Grain Brain As women approach menopause, many start to experience the physical and emotional indignities of hormonal fluctuation: metabolic stall and weight gain, hot flashes and night sweats, insomnia, memory loss or brain fog, irritability, low libido, and painful sex. Too often, doctors tell us that these discomforts are to be expected and that we will have to wait them out during “the change”; some of us even agree to be unnecessarily medicated. But Dr. Anna Cabeca’s research and experience with thousands of her patients show that there is a fast-acting and nonpharmaceutical way to dramatically and permanently alleviate these symptoms. The Hormone Fix introduces Dr. Cabeca’s unique Keto-Green protocol, a plan that pairs the hallmarks of ketogenic (low-carb/high fat) eating with diet and lifestyle changes that bring the body’s cellular pH to a healthy alkaline level. The proven result: balanced cortisol and reduced output of insulin, the hormones most responsible for belly fat and weight gain, plus an increase in oxytocin, the “love and happiness” hormone. Whether you are perimenopausal, menopausal, or postmenopausal, The Hormone Fix offers an easy-to-follow program, including • a 10-day quick-start detox diet to jump-start weight loss and reduce symptoms immediately • daily meal plans and weekly shopping lists to take the guesswork out of a month’s worth of Keto-Green eating • 65 delicious and easy-to-make recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, smoothies, and soups • detailed information on vitamin and mineral supplementation that optimizes hormone balance • simple self-assessments and recommended optional lab testing for a better understanding of your hormonal status • tested and trusted stress-reduction and oxytocin-amplifying advice and techniques With The Hormone Fix you can expect to trim down, tap into new and unexpected energy levels, enhance intimacy, and completely revitalize your life! Ready for your fix? “The Hormone Fix is a treasure trove of accurate and user-friendly information that all women who are suffering during menopause need to know and apply.”—Christiane Northrup, MD, author of The Wisdom of Menopause
