Book excerpt: She was the Queen of the Screamers, best remembered for her roles of the cultured young leading lady in nearly a dozen Universal horror films of the 1940s. She was the strikingly beautiful, Evelyn Ankers. Born in Chile, the British actress found her niche in such classic horror films as Hold That Ghost (1941), The Wolf Man (1941), The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), Captive Wild Woman (1943), Son of Dracula (1943), The Mad Ghoul (1943), Jungle Woman (1944), Weird Woman (1944), The Invisible Man's Revenge (1944) and The Frozen Ghost (1945). She even appeared in two Sherlock Holmes films, Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror (1942) and The Pearl of Death (1944). In all, Ankers appeared in more than 50 films between 1936 and 1950 in supporting and leading roles, retiring to be a housewife as part of her lifelong marriage to leading actor Richard Denning. (Ankers died of ovarian cancer at the age of 67 on August 29, 1985 in Maui.) As a tribute to Ankers, Abby Books presents 32 Evelyn Ankers Movie Posters, a collection of mostly one sheet posters, and, in some cases, lobby cards or inserts, from Ankers' most memorable films.
