Book Synopsis A Concordance to the Poems of W.B. Yeats by : Stephen Maxfield Parrish

This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 1014 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now it is possible for the first time to trace in a systematic way the language patterns of one of the greatest poets who have written in English, W. B. Yeats. Like A Concordance to the Poems of Matthew Arnold, the first of the Cornell Concordances that are under the general editorship of Professor Parrish, this volume was produced on an IBM 704 electronic data-processing machine. Computer technique has so advanced that the Yeats concordance includes punctuation and gives cross references for the second parts of hyphenated words. The frequency of every word in Yeats's poems is given, and an appendix lists all indexed words in order of frequency. The body of this book consists of an index of all significant words in Yeats, each word listed in the line or lines in which it occurs. The concordance is based on the variorum text of Yeats, edited by Alspach and Allt, and includes all variants that occur in printed versions of Yeats's poems.

Book Synopsis Propertius by : D. Thomas Benediktson
Download or read book Propertius written by D. Thomas Benediktson and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of Propertius in light of nonclassical, modernist literary techniques, especially internal monologue or stream of consciousness and imagism. Classical writers typically try to order or shape disparate experiences while modernists seek to present the complexity and disarray of human experience. Failing to realize that Propertius is in the modernist camp has led previous textual critics to divide and reorganize his poems. A. E. Housman, for example, unsuccessfully tried to reorder the lines in one Propertian poem into a logical and chronological sequence. On the contrary, Propertius, like the modernists, attempts to communicate experience itself through the association of ideas or through the reflection upon a visual picture or series of pictures (imagism, or what Pound described as the "superposition" of image and narrative). Benediktson finds philosophical justification for imagism in the Epicurean theory of images and in the Epicurean theorist and poet Philodemus, as well as in the doctrine of utpictura poesis. The result is a picture of Propertius that accounts for the mathematical precision of Book I, the structural chaos of Book II, and the more balanced poetry of Books III and IV.

Book Synopsis Poems and Prose by : Christina Rossetti
Download or read book Poems and Prose written by Christina Rossetti and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The mystery of Life, the mystery Of Death, I see Darkly as in a glass...' Christina Rossetti (1830-94) is perhaps the most contradictory of the great Victorian poets. She writes of the world's beauty, but fears that it may be deceptive, even deadly. She is a religious poet, but much of her work is driven by uncertainty. Her poems are restrained, even secretive, but they seek nothing less than the mystery of Life and Death. This edition contains Rossetti's strongest and most distinctive work: poetry (including 'Goblin Market', 'The Prince's Progress', and the sonnet sequence 'Monna Innominata'), stories (including the complete text of Maude), devotional prose (with nearly fifty entries from the 'reading diary' Times Flies), and personal letters. Those poems which Rossetti published, and those which she withheld from publication, are here brought together in chronological order, allowing the reader to observe her poetic trajectory. This edition also records the major revisions made by Rossetti when preparing her poems for publication. It brings together the fullest range of Rossetti's poetry and prose in one volume, and is an indispensable introduction to this entrancing writer. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

In this study, one of the leading specialists in classical Chinese literature introduces readers to a repertoire of seventy-seven songs and ballads of early imperial China. Each song-text is newly translated and fully annotated and explicated. Anne Birrell deals systematically with problems of the earliest sources, attribution, textual variants, meter, and structure. Her introductory essay provides a valuable sociohistorical context for this material. First published in 1988, this important study of the folk song has become standard reading for students of oral literature and Chinese folklore and popular culture.
