Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time in Melbourne there was a gigolo who thought he was a vampire. He bit the tongue off a prostitute and was then murdered in broad daylight on a suburban street. His execution, top brass believed, was organised by police. The aftershocks of this killing—and the murder of a state witness and his wife inside their fortress home—rocked the police force and the Parliament, vanquished one government and brought the next to its knees. This is the story of police corruption for years swept under the carpet to avoid a Royal Commission. It is the story of a police force politicised to the point of paralysis and a witness protection program that buries its mistakes. It involves a policeman still free and living in a very big house, a drug baron who survived the gangland war only to be murdered in the state's most secure jail, and battles royale within a police force comprised of thousands of pistol-packing members. This is the story of Melbourne around the first decade of the new millennium: its lawmen, villains and politicians. It is a bizarre, tawdry, unbelievable tale. But every word of it happened.

Book excerpt: Despite a very substantial architecture and urban heritage, Melbourne in the mid 1980s was experiencing a flight to the suburbs and becoming a rather dull city that closed on evenings and weekends. While many challenges remain, the incremental transformation of central Melbourne is now a global success story that needs to be better studied. This is not one story but many: the design of new architecture and public space reclaimed from cars and rail yards; from turning its back on the water, Melbourne has integrated the river and become a waterfront city. It has grown greener--literally, environmentally and politically. Laneways that were once filled with garbage are now filled with 'hidden' bars, artworks, housing and urban art. Urban Choreography will document and discuss the many urban design transformations over this period with a focus on key events, plans, projects, places and people involved and seeks to understand the political and other forces that drove, framed and constrained these changes.

Book excerpt: Melbourne was a quiet coastal town of 157 people on Florida's Indian River lagoon. Farming, ranching, fishing, and related trades supported the local economy. Melbourne entered the industrial age in 1912, when the Union Cypress Company began manufacturing lumber from the private cypress and pine holdings of George W. Hopkins at Deer Park. This timber had a 1911 market value of over $2 million. Good employment and a local source of lumber brought development, and the company-owned mill town of Hopkins was eventually annexed by Melbourne. The company provided Melbourne's first electricity and out-patient hospital. The Union Cypress Railway provided the first direct route to Florida's interior across the "impenetrable" St. Johns River and marsh, saving over 100 miles and countless hours of back-road travel via Enterprise, which was 80 miles to the north. It opened the vast St. Johns prairie lands for settlement and carried much of the regional commerce.
