Gustave Flaubert Since the spectacular purchase of the Agfa Foto-Historama collections, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne can lay claim to the earliest daguerreotypes from Berlin, albums which once belonged to Alexander von Humboldt, photographs by Desire Charnay of Mexico and Maxime Du Camp of Egypt, Auguste Salzmann of Jerusalem, Charles Clifford of Spain, August F. Oppenheim of Greece, photographic incunabula by David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson, as well as prints by Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadar and Franz Hanfstaengl. The inventory also includes 200 caricatures and illustrations on the behavior of people in front of and behind the camera and numerous documents and autographs from Daguerre to Talbot, from Hermann Biow to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. Erich Stenger obtained from August Sander a rare original `Stammappen' on the work of "Citizens of the 20th Century". The Gesellschaft Deutscher Lichtbildner (GDL) was then honored to present him with a portfolio of more than 50 portraits of 1949/50 members. In the 1960s the following were added to the collection: the personal estate of Hermann Krone of Dresden, photographs by Baldus and Charles Negre, more than 300 portraits of artists, writers and politicians shot by Hugo Erfurth in Dresden and Cologne, photographs by Erich Salomon, Fritz Henle, etc. This unique inventory and the history of this collection is said to be the oldest collection on the cultural history of photography in German-speaking countries. Now for the first time Facts provides an overview of the entire collection. Co-published with Museum Ludwig, Cologne.

Light, Paper, Process features the work of seven artists—Alison Rossiter, Marco Breuer, James Welling, Lisa Oppenheim, Chris McCaw, John Chiara, and Matthew Brandt—who investigate the possibilities of analog photography by finding innovative, surprising, and sometimes controversial ways to push light-sensitive photographic papers and chemical processing beyond their limits. A panoply of practices emerges in the work of these artists. Some customize cameras with special lenses or produce images on paper without a camera or film. Others load paper, rather than film, in the camera or create contact-printing with sources of light other than the enlarger, while still others use expired photographic papers and extraneous materials, such as dust and sweat, selected to match the particular subject of the photograph. All of the artists share a willingness to embrace accident and chance. Trial and error contribute to an understanding of the materials and their potential, as do the attitudes of underlying curiosity and inventive interrogation. Book excerpt: After On the Mines, The Transported of KwaNdebele is the second of David Goldblatt's books to be redesigned and expanded by the artist for Steidl Publishers. Dating originally from 1989, it talks about the workers of an apartheid tribal homeland for blacks, KwaNdebele, which has no industry, very few opportunities for jobs and is a long way from the nearest industrial-commercial activity of white-controlled Pretoria. Workers from KwaNdebele catch buses in the very early morning, some as early as 2:45 am, in order to be at their workplaces in Pretoria by 7:00. At the end of the day they repeat the journey in the other direction, to get home at between 8 and 10 pm. Goldblatt takes us on their bone-jarring journeys through the night, which is a metaphor for their arduous struggle toward freedom itself. In photographs devoid of sentimentality and artifice, the grim determination of these people to survive and overcome emerges in almost heroic terms. Brenda Goldblatt, filmmaker and writer, interviewed some of the bus-riding workers who endured not only these journeys but a civil war precipitated by the apartheid government's attempt to foist a kind of independence on KwaNdebele--a condition which would have made the workers foreigners in the land of their birth, South Africa, and thus deprived them of their limited right to work there. Interviews with contemporary (2012) bus-riders fill out the account. Phillip van Niekerk, former editor of the Mail & Guardian, provides an essay on KwaNdebele, its place in the logic of grand apartheid and its half-life in post-apartheid South Africa.

Rosenquist writes about his shows with the dealers Richard Bellamy, Ileana Sonnabend, and Leo Castelli, and about colorful collectors like Robert and Ethel Scull. We learn about the 1971 car crash that left his wife and son in a coma and his own life and work in shambles, his lobbying—along with Rauschenberg—for artists’ rights in Washington D.C., and how he got his work back on track.
