Book excerpt: The history of women composers has been defined by overt prejudice. However, in the 20th century that narrative began to change. By the 1950s women composers began to thrive, having their works performed worldwide and in virtually all genres. Recognition of their works has flourished, with two Pulitzer Prize winners, numerous Grammy Awards, acceptance into prestigious fellowships, and more. Their contributions to the world of music are making a noticeable impact on classical music and their works for tuba are no exception. The intent of this treatise is to be a resource of solo literature for tuba written by various women composers. The selected solo works have been chosen to represent quality literature at various difficulty levels. Two works have been chosen to highlight each difficulty level. For each work, the author identified their purpose for selection, musical form, and performance challenges. Along with the description will be suggested performance fundamentals designed to assist with key components of each piece. In addition to the selections in this paper, a more extensive list of works has been provided. Each work includes a brief biography about the composer and a difficulty rating based on the ITEA Standard Literature rubric.

Book excerpt: The solo repertoire of the tuba and euphonium has grown exponentially since the middle of the 20th century, due in large part to the pioneering work of several artist-performers on those instruments. These performers sought out and collaborated directly with composers, helping to produce works that sensibly and musically used the tuba and euphonium. However, not every composer who wishes to write for the tuba and euphonium has access to world-class tubists and euphonists, and the body of available literature concerning the capabilities of the tuba family is both small in number and lacking in comprehensiveness. This document seeks to remedy this situation by producing a comprehensive and accessible guide on the capabilities of the tuba family. An analysis of the currently-available materials concerning the tuba family will give direction on the structure and content of this new guide, as will the dissemination of a survey to the North American composition community. The end result, the Composer's Guide to the Tuba, is a practical, accessible, and composer-centric guide to the modern capabilities of the tuba family of instruments.

This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble (TTTE) is one of the most successful performing collegiate ensembles in history, with an enviable record of 25 recording projects, seven Carnegie Hall appearances, two World's Fairs performances, numerous national and international conference engagements, and a performance history in venues like Preservation Hall in New Orleans, the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and the Kennedy Center in Washington. The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble and R. Winston Morris: A 40th Anniversary Retrospective lists all of these events and more. It tells how Morris founded an ensemble comprised only of tubas and euphoniums (the "underdogs" of the orchestra) and catapulted it to international recognition, establishing and defining the standards for tuba ensemble performance practices and creating a monumental influence on both the tuba and music education throughout the world. The book provides a biography of Morris that includes the influences that led to the development of the TTTE, and it describes the early years of the ensemble and its development as one of the most recognizable groups of its kind. Several lists of reference information specific to Morris and the group—and general to tuba and euphonium music—are offered. Details about concerts, performances, activities, and recordings of the ensemble are presented, as well as recordings, awards, honors, and publications by Morris. Former members of the group are listed and pictured in more than 85 photos comprising a photographic history. Winston and the TTTE are responsible for the composition and arrangement of more music for the tuba than any other single source, and a comprehensive list of those works is supplied here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second book of Practical Studies is designed to logically extend the techniques already presented in the First Book and also to introduce and develop new techniques and rhythms that will offer a challenge to the intermediate student. Through the use of slightly more difficult and more extended studies, it is hoped that the material included in this book may more fully develop general musicianship and more feeling for style and interpretation and thus act as a foundation for solo literature.
