Book excerpt: The Census Bureau has insufficient policies and procedures and inadequately trained staff for conducting high-quality cost estimation for the decennial census. Lacking plans for the development of both non-response follow-up and the management system, the Bureau faces the risk of not having them developed and fully tested in time for the 2010 Census. The Bureau faces long-standing challenges with the nation's linguistic diversity and privacy concerns, which can contribute to the under-counting of some groups. With just over a year remaining until Census Day, uncertainties surround the Bureau's overall readiness for 2010. Illustrations.

This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decennial census produces data used to apportion congressional seats, redraw congressional districts, and help allocate billions of dollars in federal assistance. In March 2008, the 2010 Census was designated a high-risk area in part because of info. tech. (IT )shortcomings. The U.S. Census Bureau (CB) has since strengthened its risk management efforts and made other improvements. This testimony discusses the Bureau's readiness for 2010 and covers: (1) the delivery of key IT systems, (2) preliminary findings on the results of address canvassing and the lessons learned from that operation that can be applied to subsequent field operations, and (3) the CB's progress in improving its cost estimation abilities. Charts and tables.

Book Synopsis Population Geography by : K. Bruce Newbold
Download or read book Population Geography written by K. Bruce Newbold and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compact and accessible text provides a comprehensive, issue-oriented introduction to population geography. After grounding students in the fundamentals, K. Bruce Newbold then explains the tools and techniques commonly used to describe and understand population concepts using real-world issues and events. Drawing on both US and international cases, he explores such pressing concerns as HIV/AIDS, international migration, fertility, mortality, resource scarcity, and conflict. Every chapter includes methods and focus sections, as well as study questions, to provide a more in-depth discussion of the ideas and concepts developed in the book. In addition, a wide array of maps, tables, and figures illustrates and enhances the cases. Newbold highlights the geographical perspective—with its ability to provide powerful insights and bridge disparate issues—by emphasizing the role of space and place, location, regional differences, and diffusion. Arguing that an understanding of population is essential to prepare for the future, this cogent text will provide upper-division undergraduates with a thorough grasp of the field.

Download or read book Reengineering the 2010 Census written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-04-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the request of the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Research Council's Committee on National Statistics established the Panel on Research on Future Census Methods to review the early planning process for the 2010 census. This new report documents the panel's strong support for the major aims of the Census Bureau's emerging plan for 2010. At the same time, it notes the considerable challenges that must be overcome if the bureau's innovations are to be successful. The panel agrees with the Census Bureau that implementation of the American Community Survey and, with it, the separation of the long form from the census process are excellent concepts. Moreover, it concurs that the critically important Master Address File and TIGER geographic systems are in dire need of comprehensive updating and that new technologies have the potential to improve the accuracy of the count. The report identifies the risks and rewards of these and other components of the Census Bureau's plan. The report emphasizes the need for the bureau to link its research and evaluation efforts much more closely to operational planning and the importance of funding for a comprehensive and rigorous testing program before 2010.

Download or read book 2010 Census written by Robert Goldenkoff and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the U.S. Census Bureau generally completed the field data collection phase of the 2010 Census consistent with its operational plans, at $13 billion, 2010 was the costliest census in the nation's history. Moving forward, it will be important to both refine existing operations as well as to address long-standing issues such as securing participation and escalating costs. This report reviews: (1) the conduct of non-response follow-up, where enumerators collect data from households that did not return their census forms; (2) the implementation of other field operations critical to a complete count; and (3) potential re-examination areas that could help produce a more cost-effective 2020 Census.
