Book excerpt: This report summarizes bottom trawl survey data used to assess Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi abundance within the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Central Region. Trawl surveys replaced pot surveys as the primary method of assessing Tanner crab in Central Region in the early 1990s. Data for the Central Region were collected from 2 management districts in the Lower Cook Inlet Management Area: 1) the Southern District (1990-2013), and 2) the Kamishak Bay and Barren Islands Districts (1990-2012). Data were also collected from the Prince William Sound Management Area (1991-2015). Since 1993 in the Southern District, and 1990 in the Kamishak Bay and Barren Islands Districts, the estimated abundance of legal male Tanner crab has not exceeded the minimum stock size threshold defined in regulation that is necessary to open a commercial fishery (Alaska Administrative Code 5 AAC 35.408). Bottom trawl survey methods have changed through the history of the survey and those changes are documented in this report. Abundance trends of legal and sublegal male and female Tanner crab are also described along with trends in recruitment. Analysis and harvest strategy recommendations to create a management plan for commercial and noncommercial Tanner crab fisheries in the Prince William Sound Management Area are presented.

Book excerpt: A bottom trawl survey was conducted from August 29 to September 6, 2017, to estimate density and infer abundance of Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi in Kachemak Bay within the Southern District of the Cook Inlet Area. The survey was conducted aboard ADF&G's research vessel Pandalus using a 400-mesh Eastern otter trawl (large-mesh trawl). The survey caught 1,481 male Tanner crab of which 137 (9%) were of legal size (114 mm carapace width or greater) to produce a mean CPUE of 10.13 crab/nmi (CV = 0.52) and yielded an abundance estimate of 124,965 legal crab. Legal male Tanner crab were caught at 11 of the 38 stations with 90% of the total legal males caught at only 5 stations. The survey caught 1,350 female Tanner crab of which 348 (26%) were mature to produce a mean CPUE of 24.08 crab/nmi (CV = 0.50) and yielded an abundance estimate of 297,126 mature crab. Abundance estimates of legal male and mature female Tanner crab were well below the long-term average of the survey time series.

The survey was conducted aboard the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) research vessel Pandalus using a 400-mesh Eastern otter trawl (large-mesh trawl). In 2018, the survey caught 12,568 male Tanner crab of which 348 were of legal size, ≥114mm (4.5 in), to produce a mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) of 18.06 legal-size crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 222,852 legal-size crab. In 2019, the survey caught 1,682 male Tanner crab of which 421 were of legal size to produce a mean CPUE of 22.17 legal-size crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 273,511 legal-size crab. The 2017, 2018, and 2019 survey results produced a 3-year mean of 207,109 legal-size male crab which allowed the standard noncommercial fisheries to occur for the 2019–2020 season. In 2018, the survey caught 4,193 female Tanner crab of which 1,566 were mature to produce a mean CPUE of 82.25 mature female crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 1,014,869 mature female crab. In 2019, the survey caught 2,660 female Tanner crab of which 2,295 were mature to produce a mean CPUE of 120.66 mature female crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 1,488,880 mature female crab. Abundance estimates of legal-size male Tanner crab were slightly above the long-term mean, and mature female Tanner crab were substantially above the long-term mean of the survey time series.

Book excerpt: Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) conducted a pot survey for Dungeness crab Metacarcinus magister in the Kodiak Area during August - September 2014 and collaborated with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to evaluate sea otter Enthydra lutris kenyoni bycatch in the Kodiak Area Dungeness crab fishery by concurrently performing transect surveys for sea otters and monitoring their presence and interaction with survey pot gear. A total of 650 pot lifts were performed using commercial Dungeness crab pots fished in 3 areas important for the Kodiak Area commercial Dungeness crab fishery: Ugak Bay (300 pot lifts), Alitak Bay (250 pot lifts), and the Trinity Islands (100 pot lifts). One-half of the pots fished in each area were fished with the escape rings closed. A total of 3,272 Dungeness crab were captured during the pot survey. Catch per pot lift (CPUE) of sublegal males and females by pots with closed escape rings was significantly (P = 0.004) higher than by pots with open escape rings; the effect of escape ring configuration on CPUE of legal males was not significant (P = 0.337). The CPUE of each sex-size class varied significantly (P

Book excerpt: This report summarizes results from the large-mesh bottom trawl survey that took place June through September 2021 to assess crab and groundfish resources in the Kodiak, Chignik, South Peninsula, and Eastern Aleutian Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi management Districts. A total of 337 trawl hauls were conducted to assess relative abundance and condition of commercially important crabs, as well as spatial distribution, species composition, size frequency, and catch per unit effort of commercially important groundfish. Survey estimates indicated that mature and legal male Tanner crab abundances were sufficient to support commercial fisheries in 3 sections of the Kodiak District, the Chignik District, and both sections of the South Peninsula District. Red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus abundance estimates in each of the surveyed management areas remain too low to consider opening a red king crab commercial fishery. Arrowtooth flounder Atheresthes stomias, flathead sole Hippoglossoides elassodon, walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus, and yellowfin sole Limanda aspera, were the dominant groundfish captured during the survey. report summarizes results from the large-mesh bottom trawl survey that took place June through September 2020 to assess crab and groundfish resources in the Kodiak, Chignik, and South Peninsula Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi management districts. Book excerpt: Dr. Riki Ott exposes the profound legacy of the Exxon Valdez oil spill and how readers can help reshape our global energy future. The author chronicles the long-lasting environmental harm to Prince William Sound, Alaska, and investigates the health problems suffered by many cleanup workers. Exxon's spill provided a portal to understanding a startling truth: oil is much more toxic than we previously thought. Sound Truth and Corporate Myth$ frames the larger story of discovery of the truly toxic nature of oil. This book shows how one particular fraction of crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs, may well be the new DDT of the 21st century. In 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency listed 22 PAHs in crude oil as "persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) pollutants." Sharing this list of extreme human health hazards are the more commonly known pollutants--mercury, lead, dioxin, PCBs, and DDT. The latter are all highly regulated chemicals and some, such as DDT and PCBs, have been banned in the United States. Sound Truth and Corporate Myth$ traces 15 years of lingering harm to humans and wildlife from the Exxon Valdez oil spill. It reveals how corporate greed, government short-sightedness, and manipulation of the truth and the media have kept the public from learning the deadly nature of PAHs. The author provides relevant information and practical recommendations for people and policy-makers at this critical juncture in the history of civilization. This book will inspire people to reduce their own consumption of fossil fuels and, in so doing, help permanently shift society to a clean energy future.
