Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with both the national security concerns of Asian maritime nations and the security of the Asian maritime commons. These are defined as the Pacific and Indian Oceans and associated seas, bays, and gulfs, with their included sea lines of communication (SLOCs). The most useful geographical designation for maritime Asia is the “Indo-Pacific.” Bernard Cole provides both a survey of the maritime strategies of the primary nations of the Indo-Pacific region and an evaluation of the domestic and international politics that drive those strategies. The United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China, the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Iran, the smaller Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf states are all surveyed and analyzed. The United States, Japan, China, and India not surprisingly draw the most attention, given their large modern navies and distant strategic reach. The author concludes that the United States remains the dominant maritime power in this huge region, stretching from Canada to the Persian Gulf, despite its lack of a traditionally strong merchant marine. U.S. maritime power remains paramount, due primarily to its dominant navy. The Chinese naval modernization program deservedly receives a good deal of public attention, but Cole argues that on a day-to-day basis the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, as its navy is named, is the most powerful maritime force in Far Eastern waters, while the modernizing Indian Navy potentially dominates the Indian Ocean. In fact, a focus of this work is the exemplary description of all the region’s navies, with the author noting the naval arms race that is underway, particularly in the area of submarine acquisition. Cole is careful to couch this phenomenon in the regional concerns about Chinese naval expansion and the desire to ensure a continued, massive U.S. naval presence. The current naval developments in the region evince elements of a naval arms race, but lack the coherent maritime strategies to make naval developments dangerous to regional peace and security. Most telling will be whether United States power and focus remain on the region, while adjusting to continued Chinese maritime power in a way acceptable to both nations. No other current or recent work provides such a complete description of the Indo-Pacific region’s navies and maritime strategies, while analyzing the current and future impact of those forces.

The persuasive power lies in understanding that children's behaviors are often a means of expressing their underlying needs and emotions. Therefore, it's essential to approach these challenges with empathy and patience. One approach is positive reinforcement, which involves rewarding desirable behaviors to encourage their repetition. By acknowledging and praising the child's good behavior, we can foster a positive environment that reinforces positive choices. Setting clear expectations and consistent boundaries is another effective method. Children thrive when they understand what is expected of them and are aware of the consequences of their actions. By providing them with structural routine, we can help them develop self-discipline and responsible behavior. Additionally, active listening and effective communication play a significant role in addressing behavioral challenges. Taking the time to truly listen to children, validating their feelings, and offering support can go a long way in promoting emotional well-being and reducing problematic behaviors. Finally, collaborating with professionals, such as teachers, counselors, or therapists, can provide valuable insights and strategies for dealing with specific behavioral challenges. By working together and utilizing evidence-based approaches, we increase our chances of helping children overcome their behavioral struggles. Ultimately, these effective approaches not only improve the child's behavior but also support their overall growth and development. By embracing these approaches and implementing them consistently, we can create a nurturing environment that encourages positive behavior and empowers children to reach their full potential.

Book excerpt: 'NDiaye is a hypnotic storyteller with an unflinching understanding of the rock-bottom reality of most people's life.' New York Times ' One of France's most exciting prose stylists.' The Guardian. Obsessed by her encounters with the mysterious green women, and haunted by the Garonne River, a nameless narrator seeks them out in La Roele, Paris, Marseille, and Ouagadougou. Each encounter reveals different aspects of the women; real or imagined, dead or alive, seductive or suicidal, driving the narrator deeper into her obsession, in this unsettling exploration of identity, memory and paranoia. Self Portrait in Green is the multi-prize winning, Marie NDiaye's brilliant subversion of the memoir. Written in diary entries, with lyrical prose and dreamlike imagery, we start with and return to the river, which mirrors the narrative by posing more questions than it answers.

Book excerpt: The following objectives, stated below in order of priority, should guide Atlantic fisheries policy: 1)The Atlantic fishing industry should be economically viable on an ongoing basis, where to be viable implies an ability to survive downturns with only a normal business failure rate and without government assistance. 2)Employment in the Atlantic fishing industry should be maximized subject to the constraints that those employed receive a reasonable income as a result of fishery-related activities, including fishery-related income transfer payments. 3)Fish within the 200-mile Canadian zone should be harvested and processed by Canadians in firms owned by Canadians wherever this is consistant with Objectives 1 and 2 and with Canada's international treaty obligations.

Book excerpt: Baptism has been a contested practice from the very beginning of the church. In this volume, Ben Witherington rethinks the theology of baptism and does so in constant conversation with the classic theological positions and central New Testament texts. By placing baptism in the context of the covenant, Witherington shows how advocates of both believer's baptism and infant baptism have added some water to both their theology and practice of baptism.

As more and more people globally show greater interest in what their religious traditions say about our natural world, Troubled Waters: Religion, Ethics, and the Global Water Crisis examines the central role of water in various traditions and rituals, arriving at creative new ways to approach the growing water crisis worldwide. Chamberlain outlines many of the current water problems and lays out clear principles for action that engaged citizens from various traditions can undertake to meet the growing water challenges through conservation and water management policies. Book excerpt: An eye-opening introduction to the complexity, wonder, and vital roles of coral reefs When mass coral bleaching and die-offs were first identified in the 1980s, and eventually linked to warming events, the scientific community was sure that such a dramatic and unambiguous signal would serve as a warning sign about the devastating effects of global warming. Instead, most people ignored that warning. Subsequent decades have witnessed yet more degradation. Reefs around the world have lost more than 50 percent of their living coral since the 1970s. In this book, distinguished marine ecologist Peter F. Sale imparts his passion for the unexpected beauty, complexity, and necessity of coral reefs. By placing reefs in the wider context of global climate change, Sale demonstrates how their decline is more than simply a one-off environmental tragedy, but rather an existential warning to humanity. He offers a reframing of the enormous challenge humanity faces as a noble venture to steer the planet into safe waters that might even retain some coral reefs.

Book excerpt: When village workers discover the headless skeleton of a toddler in a Raggedy Ann dress in an abandoned railroad shack scheduled for demolition in their quaint "Little Englande" neighborhood (like a page plucked from the pages of a Dickens novel), they call in Lieutenant Pete Meyer of the Village of Oleander's Police Department to investigate. It wouldn't be the last murder in the Village of Oleander.
