Book Synopsis Troubled Geographies by : Ian N. Gregory
Download or read book Troubled Geographies written by Ian N. Gregory and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-27 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Tap[s] the power of new geospatial technologies . . . explore[s] the intersection of geography, religion, politics, and identity in Irish history.”—International Social Science Review Ireland’s landscape is marked by fault lines of religious, ethnic, and political identity that have shaped its troubled history. Troubled Geographies maps this history by detailing the patterns of change in Ireland from 16th century attempts to “plant” areas of Ireland with loyal English Protestants to defend against threats posed by indigenous Catholics, through the violence of the latter part of the 20th century and the rise of the “Celtic Tiger.” The book is concerned with how a geography laid down in the 16th and 17th centuries led to an amalgam based on religious belief, ethnic/national identity, and political conviction that continues to shape the geographies of modern Ireland. Troubled Geographies shows how changes in religious affiliation, identity, and territoriality have impacted Irish society during this period. It explores the response of society in general and religion in particular to major cultural shocks such as the Famine and to long term processes such as urbanization. “Makes a strong case for a greater consideration of spatial information in historical analysis―a message that is obviously appealing for geographers.”—Journal of Interdisciplinary History “A book like this is useful as a reminder of the struggles and the sacrifices of generations of unrest and conflict, albeit that, on a global scale, the Irish troubles are just one of a myriad of disputes, each with their own history and localized geography.”—Journal of Historical Geography

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This chapter introduces the main features of the transformative self-what it is and is not. For instance, the transformative self is not a person but rather a self-identity that a person uses to facilitate personal growth. The person creates a transformative self primarily in their evolving life story. This growth-oriented narrative identity helps the person to cultivate growth toward a good life for the self and others. The chapter provides an overview of the book's theoretical approach and topics. The book's first section examines the components of personal growth, narrative identity, and a good life that culturally characterize the transformative self. The second section explores he personality and social ecology of the person who has a transformative self. The third section shows how the transformative self itself develops over time. The final section explores the hazards and heights of having a transformative self"--
Download or read book Finders Keepers written by Seamus Heaney and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether autobiographical, topical, or specifically literary, these writings circle the central preoccupying questions of Seamus Heaney's career: "How should a poet properly live and write? What is his relationship to be to his own voice, his own place, his literary heritage and the contemporary world?" Along with a selection from the poet's three previous collections of prose (Preoccupations, The Government of the Tongue, and The Redress of Poetry), the present volume includes Heaney's finest lectures and a rich variety of pieces not previously collected in volume form, ranging from short newspaper articles to radio commentaries. In its soundings of a wide range of poets -- Irish and British, American and Eastern European, predecessors and contemporaries -- Finders Keepers is, as its title indicates, "an announcement of both excitement and possession."

Book Synopsis Mapping India's Urbanization by : J.P. Singh
Download or read book Mapping India's Urbanization written by J.P. Singh and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s urbanization differs markedly from that of the more developed regions. While urban growth in the more developed regions is slowing down, India’surbanization is moving with a speedy pace. India has been facing a serious problemof the rapid rise of population since the last seven decades. The huge size of urbanpopulation population has reached nearly 400 million now, while until the nineteenthcentury no developed country had a population of more than 100 million. Only a few metropolises dominate the remainder of the country so excessivelythat they prevent other parts from developing, causing increasing regionalimbalance. The rapidly increasing population requires a commensurate increasein the number of jobs in urban areas, if this population is not to starve or bereduced to total dependence. The expansion in the industrial sector of the economyhas lagged far behind the population growth. This has resulted in increasingunemployment, slums, deterioration in urban living, crime, political tension, povertyand similar other problems. It appears that India is likely to confront still greaterurban problems in future. With the hasty rise of population the quality of life inbig cities has deteriorated quite significant.

Download or read book Provinces written by Christopher Dunn and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provinces is both a study of Canadian provincial government and a review of comparative politics. As such, it represents a long overdue return to the comparative tradition with its emphasis on subject-specific studies across the country. The chapters in this revised edition of Provinces, each of which has been written for the book by a leading scholar, are arranged according to four major sections?political life, institutions, public administration, and public policy?making the book highly suitable for those interested in areas beyond provincial politics. At the same time, the adopted comparative approach reveals a wealth of insight into Canadian politics at the beginning of the new millennium. This new edition covers some of the vital concerns of our time: a disquiet about the quality of democracy, concern about women?s place in provincial societies, interest in the nature and potential of governance in the north, unease on the question of the fiscal imbalance between all orders of government, a sensitivity to the needs of cities and communities, assessment of the retrenchment of the state, and consideration of the policy futures influenced by the changing demography of the provinces. Special Combined Price: Provinces, second edition may be ordered together with The Provincial State in Canada: Politics in the Provinces and Territories at a special discounted price.
