This book was released on 2019-10-12 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merriam Press World War 2 History Series. Well-known military historian Col. Roy M. Stanley II presents the second volume of his series on World War II in the Pacific. Like the first volume, it is essentially a photo book with accompanying text, drawing heavily from DOD Intelligence and Army files, National Archives and numerous other sources. What is offered, to both the casual reader and the military history buff, is his 27 years of military experience and skill as a photo interpreter to draw information from the imagery. Stanley considers photos, particularly aerial photos, an "original source" equal to first-hand testimony. Many photos were found at random during reviews of DOD imagery holdings he was responsible for, but actively searched for pictures of Guadalcanal. There were no indexes for the boxes he was screening, but one of his goals was to assemble everything on "The Canal." Coverage includes Coral Sea and Midway battles. Well illustrated with hundreds of photos, illustrations, and maps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the closing months of the Second World War, General Eisenhower exhorted the Western Allied forces to redouble their efforts to break the German will to resist. In considering this appeal, General Gubbins, whose Special Operations Executive was making a significant contribution to the liberation of occupied territory, was faced with a fundamental difficulty in the case of Germany. Although opposition to Nazism was present in some areas, it was neither organised nor pro-Allied. Then someone had the idea of creating an entirely fictional German resistance movement and 'selling it' to the Nazi security authorities. From January until April 1945, SOE rained propaganda leaflets on the hapless population fleeing the ruins of their cities and the oncoming Allied ground forces; they broadcast messages to the 'resistance'; they planted the most scandalous lies about eminent Nazis; and at the end they even dropped four agents on fictitious missions. This imaginative response to Ike's exhortation and the sheer audacity of the operation itself demand to be told to a wider audience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life: March 8, 1943 The picture above and those on the following pages are a shocking disgrace to the U. S. They portray conditions in our island possession of Puerto Rico. While millions of young men are fighting to clean up the Axis and to create a better post-war world, the cesspool of Puerto Rico has been festering in our backyard for over 40 years. If Americans cannot straighten out the relatively small mess of this small island, how can they expect to bring order cut 0° chaos in the rest of the big world? Last week a Senate Investigating Committee, headed by Senator Chavez of New Mexico, returned from an ou-the-spot study of Puerto Rico's prob lems. After ten days of looking around and hearing confusing testimony, the committee found a plethora of problems, some of them new, most of them old. The face of Puerto Rico has always been dirty and its belly empty. There are few places in the world with slimier slums (see above), more acute poverty. As a result, they commissioned an oral history project, so that their testimonies would not be lost. This book is based on the recordings of their stories - of how a man called George MacLeod, and a group of like-minded friends and colleagues, had a vision of how to put the church with its message of 'good news to the poor' speak again to ordinary people.

Book excerpt: Four friends. Fifteen years. Who We Are Now is a story of Sliding Doors moments, those seemingly small choices of early adulthood that determine the course of our lives. It is 2006 and Rachel, Clarissa, Dev, and Nate are best friends, seniors on the eve of their college graduation. Their whole lives are before them, at once full of promise and anxiety. Bound to one another as they are, they imagine their closeness will last forever—but things change as they take their first steps away from one another and into adulthood. Each year is told from one character’s point of view, and in that way, we stride swiftly through their lives. These four friends feel their twenties and thirties flying by, and suddenly small moments fast become regrets or unexpected boons, decisions they’ll spend years wishing they could undo and choices that come to define them. As the foursome endure professional setbacks, deep loss, and creative success, fortunes shift and friendships strain—and it will take a tragic turn of events to bring them together again. Who We Are Now is a poignant story of epic friendship that jumps boldly through the years, moving at the same unforgiving pace as does that precious, confusing time between college and real life. This novel is perfect for readers who adore tales of friendship, explorations of the second coming of age moment that arrives in our thirties, and fans of Meg Wolitzer’s The Interestings or Dolly Alderton’s Ghosts.
