It was such a powerful movement that it upended the British East India Companys foundations in India. The British looted and plundered us for 200 long years. Drained our economy of $45 trillion and left us in abject poverty. In ancient India, roughly 90% of the population was literate. Every hamlet in India had a school, but once the British left, our literacy rate fell to 16%. As a result of their atrocities, people from all over India, from many areas and linguistic groups as well as from various religious backgrounds actively participated in the 1857 Indian Freedom Movement against the British. It is a wonderful illustration of variety and harmony. It is depressing to learn that our historians utterly failed to compile and portray the tangible records that were accessible regarding the movement. They weren't sure whether to refer to it as the first Indian liberation struggle or call it a mutiny like the British did. Those who assert it was an act of mutiny might change their mind after reading this book.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Foundations of the Composite Culture in India, the focus of the author is the process of establishment of Hindu-Muslim unity as a result of historical, social and cultural factors over a period of ten centuries. Traversing this era, he reveals how the Muslim rulers contributed to such harmony and how the two cultures exchanged and accepted each other's tenets to enrich and formulate a composite Indian culture. To explore the foundations on which the complex culture of India rests, the author examines the contribution of Sufism which inherently connotes syncretism and tolerance, as well as the simultaneous rise of the Bhakti movement in medieval India. Book excerpt: These twelve essays explore the nature of south Asian agrarian society and examine the extent to which it changed during the period of British rule. The central focus of the book is directed to peasant agitation and violence and four of the studies look at the agrarian explosion that formed the background to the 1857 Mutiny. The essays give a coherent historical treatment of the Indian peasant world, and the paperback edition of this successful book will be of interest to the student of peasant studies and to the sociologist as well as to development economists and agronomists generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment in British India produced an impressive number of scholars and scholarly amateurs who pursued historical and other studies and wrote books and articles of distinction. Mr Palmer has produced a work in this tradition. His subject is the outbreak of the Mutiny (as the Raj considered it) among the native regiments (as the Raj called them) at Meerut on the evening of Sunday 10 May 1857. Was the outbreak planned in advance or did it arise through chance circumstances on that fateful evening? How badly was the situation handled?
