Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Seltzer Rice (American, 1873-1963) was a young artist of twenty-seven when he stepped off a train in Stockton, California, in 1900; he had left his home in Pennsylvania to take the job of assistant art supervisor for the Stockton public schools. California became not only his lifelong home but also his muse, inspiring a prolific career in art. Rice soon moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where the region's Arts and Crafts movement was flowering. He was talented in several mediums, but block printing ultimately became his favorite, for it gave him the opportunity to combine draftsmanship, carving, and printing. California's flora, fauna, and landscapes-from the Sierra Nevada to the Pacific-were the subjects that fed his creativity. William S. Rice: California Block Prints is the first book published on the artist's work and presents more than sixty of his color block prints dating from 1910 to 1935. Among the prints featured are scenes from Yosemite, Mt. Shasta, Monterey, Carmel, the San Francisco Bay Area, Lake Tahoe, and other California landmarks. An essay by Roberta Rice Treseder, Rice's daughter, recounts his life and achievements, with special emphasis on his block printing methods and materials. William S. Rice's works are in many private and public collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Oakland Museum of California, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, the New York Public Library, and the Worcester Art Museum.

Book excerpt: In 2003 Charleston artist Corrie McCallum (1914-2009) was honored with the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, South Carolina's highest public honor for those who have contributed to the cultural enrichment of the state. As demonstrated in this lovely catalog, McCallum's variety and quality of work attests to her significant artistic achievements as a painter and printmaker. A author, educator, wife, and mother, McCallum was multitasking long before it was fashionable. Her dedication to her husband, Charleston artist William Halsey, and to their children was a commitment that often compromised a full appreciation of her own art during her sixty-year marriage. In Corrie McCallum: Take Note, her work comes alive with images that exemplify her understated range of ability and talents. Ranging from oil on canvas to color woodblock to lithograph to casein to ink, she depicts the enthusiasm and vibrancy found in her everyday surroundings.

Book excerpt: With more than 80 reproductions of his work, Retrospective is the first published overview of Michael Tice’s career. The book spans over five decades from the 1970’s to the present day. Tice’s early works are rooted in a sort of domestic surrealism that evolves into a more complex exploration of male sexuality and gender roles. Many of his images can be seen as a critique of the “American dream.” His enduring interests in the domestic space, childhood innocence, and cultural nostalgia combined with his masterful use of color and texture brings to light an American past that, perhaps, only existed within the surreal landscape of the viewers mind to begin with.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charleston, South Carolina, today enjoys a reputation as a destination city for cultural and heritage tourism. In A Golden Haze of Memory, Stephanie E. Yuhl looks back to the crucial period between 1920 and 1940, when local leaders developed Charleston's trademark image as "America's Most Historic City." Eager to assert the national value of their regional cultural traditions and to situate Charleston as a bulwark against the chaos of modern America, these descendants of old-line families downplayed Confederate associations and emphasized the city's colonial and early national prominence. They created a vibrant network of individual artists, literary figures, and organizations--such as the all-white Society for the Preservation of Negro Spirituals--that nurtured architectural preservation, art, literature, and tourism while appropriating African American folk culture. In the process, they translated their selective and idiosyncratic personal, familial, and class memories into a collective identity for the city. The Charleston this group built, Yuhl argues, presented a sanitized yet highly marketable version of the American past. Their efforts invited attention and praise from outsiders while protecting social hierarchies and preserving the political and economic power of whites. Through the example of this colorful southern city, Yuhl posits a larger critique about the use of heritage and demonstrates how something as intangible as the recalled past can be transformed into real political, economic, and social power.
