Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 13th Son, and Some Other Parables Certain man had thirteen sons. A Now the stargazers and the soothsayers and' the wise women declared with a loud voice that thirteen was an unlucky number. And they prophesied that the thirteenth son would be pursued by misfortune, and there would be no place for him in the land of his birth. But his father said: It is not my fault that my wife is a fruitful vine and Malthus a true prophet. How soever the Lord will provide. Then the first son said: I will be a King or whatever ye choose to call me, Czar or President or Duke, for ye must have some one to rule over ye, and sit upon a throne, and give ye ribbons to wear in your button holes. Then the second son said: I will be a General, a soldier to do your fighting, in case anyone comes to take away the throne of your king, or saith he is bow-legged and cross-eyed and his crown a misfit. Book excerpt: “Stories that hit your heart, your sense of whimsy and your memories of different times - – writing about the south of the fifties in a nostalgic and loving way - with the touch of darkness.” In the first tale, Going Home, a small-time hoodlum, being led to the electric chair, remembers he has a few things he wants to do before he leaves this earth. In Boone, an eight-year-old tells the poignant story of an aging, crippled farmer who has a psychotic love for his wife. Two social misfits risk it all to love an unwanted child in For Love of Daniel. Cousins Billy and Roy, constantly spying on tenants of their grandmother’s rental houses, bite off more than they can chew in the haunting Gothic tale Annie. Alma Dawson’s life is turned upside down in The Agreement when she tries to raise money to pay for her daughter’s last year of college. In The Surrogate, a young woman conspires with her uncle to commit murder. A dying ten-year-old takes revenge on his tormentor in Serpentus Saragossii. In the suspenseful Tembo Makaburi, karma catches up with a greedy, arrogant big game hunter. In the final novella, The Angel Years, the Johnsons get an unexpected visitor while trying to protect a family secret. “I will add John Isaac Jones to my list of must-read southern authors!”

Book excerpt: This collection of short stories ranges through time and space from the Yucatán peninsula in the early years of the Spanish conquest (The Broken Circle) to a bank office in late Victorian London (The Stockbroker’s Wife.) Most stories feature Francis Bacon and other characters from his milieu. You’ll read about Bacon’s first case (For Want of a Book) and Tom’s first solo investigation (In Walked a Lady.) You’ll find out how Trumpet wangled her year at Gray’s Inn (Artful Bargains) and what really happened to Captain Valentine Clarady (All Englishmen Look Alike.) Sir Walter’s Ralegh and two friends trade ghost stories on a stormy night (Dark Tales from the School of Night.) You’ll even travel through time by a most unusual method (The Sneeze.) A bonus story brings you into the present, but not quite the present you’re used to (Extinction.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning new collection of stories confirms William T. Vollmann's growing reputation as the American writer whose books tower over the work of his contemporaries by virtue of their enormous range, huge ambition, stylistic daring, wide learning, audacious innovation, and sardonic wit (Washington Post Book World). All these qualities are in evidence in this collection in which the character of the writer and that of some of his intimates - both real and imaginary - surface and resurface in a series of extraordinary situations and encounters. Two astonishing stories frame this collection. The first, The Ghost of Magnetism, tells about a young man leaving San Francisco to become a sort of literary hobo living on his freeze-dried memories. The last, The Grave of Lost Stories, describes the death of Poe in a fungus-encrusted tomb somewhere deep in the earth. Here is the colorful and disreputable group of people familiar to us from Vollmann's earlier fiction - pimps, tramps, pornographers, witch doctors and massage-parlor girls. Within these stories, Vollmann gives us one of the most searching, bizarre, and subversive views of America today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prophetic Parables of Matthew 13 is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by Arthur Walkington Pink (1 April 1886 – 15 July 1952) was an English Bible teacher who sparked a renewed interest in the exposition of Calvinism or Reformed Theology. Little known in his own lifetime, Pink became "one of the most influential evangelical authors in the second half of the twentieth century." Arthur Walkington Pink was born in Nottingham, England, to a corn merchant, a devout non-conformist of uncertain denomination, though probably a Congregationalist. Otherwise, almost nothing is known of Pink's childhood or education except that he had some ability and training in music. As a young man, Pink joined the Theosophical Society and apparently rose to enough prominence within its ranks that Annie Besant, its head, offered to admit him to its leadership circle.[4] In 1908 he renounced Theosophy for evangelical Christianity. Desiring to become a minister but unwilling to attend a liberal theological college in England, Pink very briefly studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1910 before taking the pastorate of the Congregational church in Silverton, Colorado. In 1912 Pink left Silverton, probably for California, and then took a joint pastorate of churches in rural Burkesville and Albany, Kentucky. In 1916, he married Vera E. Russell (1893–1962), who had been reared in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Pink's next pastorate seems to have been in Scottsville. Then the newlyweds moved in 1917 to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where Pink became pastor of Northside Baptist Church. By this time Pink had become acquainted with prominent dispensationalist Fundamentalists, such as Harry Ironside and Arno C. Gaebelein, and his first two books, published in 1917 and 1918, were in agreement with that theological position. Yet Pink's views were changing, and during these years he also wrote the first edition of The Sovereignty of God (1918), which argued that God did not love sinners and had deliberately created "unto damnation" those who would not accept Christ. Whether because of his Calvinistic views, his nearly incredible studiousness, his weakened health, or his lack of sociability, Pink left Spartanburg in 1919 believing that God would "have me give myself to writing." But Pink then seems next to have taught the Bible with some success in California for a tent evangelist named Thompson while continuing his intense study of Puritan writings.
