Download or read book Dutch written by Roland Willemyns and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 22 million people speak Dutch-primarily in the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, and the Antilles. Roland Willemyns here offers a well-researched and highly readable survey of the Dutch language in all its historical, geographic, and social aspects. Willemyns tells a story of language contact and conflict. From its earliest days, Dutch has been in intense contact with other languages both within and outside the borders of the Low Countries, particularly with French, Frisian, and German. The first part of Dutch concentrates on the historical development of standard Dutch and its dialects. The second part focuses on contemporary Dutch, including its many dialects in Flanders and Holland (some of them on the verge of extinction). Willemyns pays special attention to important questions in the history of Dutch, particularly the contentious matter of the global spread of Dutch through colonization-which led to "exotic" variations such as Afrikaans, pidgins, and creoles-and whether Dutchmen and Flemings are "separated by the same language." His final chapter tries to shed some light on the future of Dutch, and the impact of such "new" varieties as Poldernederlands (in Holland) and Verkavelingsvlaams (in Flanders). Placing the Dutch story in the context of other West-Germanic languages like German and English, Dutch: Biography of a Language is the only English language history of Dutch and will be sure to interest a global audience of students of Dutch, those of Dutch descent, and linguists and other scholars wishing to learn more about Dutch.

It is not a handbook but offers nine studies that illustrate the reflection process from different scholarly perspectives. The approaches in this volume are interaction approach, contrastive approach, cultural representation approach, multilingualism approach and transfer approach including research into intercultural competences. Together, the chapters illustrate the essence of the essentialism and non-essentialism debate regarding diversity and inclusion.
Book Synopsis A. H. Nasution and Indonesia's Elites by : Barry Turner
Download or read book A. H. Nasution and Indonesia's Elites written by Barry Turner and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an account of the military, political and personal life of Abdul Harus Nasution who was a seminal figure in modern Indonesian history in the years prior to his effective sidelining in the 1960s. He was an important commander during Indonesia’s struggle for independence, who rose to become a key leader of the Indonesian armed forces under the first president, Sukarno. Perhaps more significantly, he developed ideas about guerrilla warfare that developed into a sophisticated and socially conservative doctrine for the mobilising of civilian communities. This, in turn, became the underpinning of the repressive, military-backed New Order regime of Indonesia’s second president, Suharto, who ruled from 1966 until 1998, and which Nasution initially supported. Understanding Nasution’s thinking about ‘total people’s resistance’ is therefore very important for understanding the broader trajectory of Indonesian political history. That includes both the New Order and the emerging democratic regime that developed after its collapse. The new political system that called itself ‘the Refom Era’ was, in many ways, a direct reaction to the New Order military's penetration and close control of Indonesian society but it has never dismantled the ‘shadow’ state’ structure of the armed forces that Nasution designed and Suharto perfected. In other words, as this book shows, Nasution’s legacy still looms large today in Jokowi’s Indonesia. This is not the first assessment of Nasution’s life but it differs from earlier works by its investigation of Nasution’s personal life and, in particular, his relationship with the well-off and well-connected Gondokusumo family, of which he became a member by his marriage to Johana Sunarti Gondokusumo. The author’s thorough investigation of Nasution’s relationship with Sunarti and her father offers important new insights into how Nasution’s ideas evolved, as does the translations of important extracts from Nasution’s own voluminous writing included in the text.
