Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical expert Paul A. Offit, M.D., offers a scathing exposé of the alternative medicine industry, revealing how even though some popular therapies are remarkably helpful due to the placebo response, many of them are ineffective, expensive, and even deadly. Dr. Offit reveals how alternative medicine—an unregulated industry under no legal obligation to prove its claims or admit its risks—can actually be harmful to our health. Using dramatic real-life stories, Offit separates the sense from the nonsense, showing why any therapy—alternative or traditional—should be scrutinized. He also shows how some nontraditional methods can do a great deal of good, in some cases exceeding therapies offered by conventional practitioners. An outspoken advocate for science-based health advocacy who is not afraid to take on media celebrities who promote alternative practices, Dr. Offit advises, “There’s no such thing as alternative medicine. There’s only medicine that works and medicine that doesn’t.”

On November 7, 1991, basketball icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson stunned the world with the news that he was HIV-positive. For the millions who watched, his announcement became a pivotal moment not only for the nation, but for his family and wife. Twenty-five years later, Cookie Johnson shares her story and the emotional journey that started on that day—from life as a pregnant and joyous newlywed to one filled with the fear that her husband would die, that she and her baby would be infected with the virus, and that their family would be shunned. Believing in Magic is the story of Cookie’s marriage to Earvin—nearly four decades of loving each other, losing their way, and eventually finding a path they never imagined. Never before has Cookie shared her full account of the reasons she stayed and her life with Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fake news is bad enough. We cannot allow ourselves to be buried in fake medicine. This book looks at quackery practiced under the cover of CIM (Complementary and Integrative Medicine). Why? To inform the consumer that there is a better way to spend their health-care dollar. How? By a better understanding of science and the scientific method. A brief summary of the development of science is given, from early Greece, through the Dark Ages, and into the twenty-first century. This history emphasizes that the development of the scientific method originated purely in Western culture, contrary to other interpretations by Islam and the Chinese. It traces the origins of anti-science in the United States. The placebo effect, an essential part of the science of medicine, is clearly defined. The absence of science is documented in twenty-five examples of CIM from acupuncture to homeopathy, from herbal medicine to aromatherapy, from spiritual healing to iridology. The history and the departure from science are emphasized. The weakness of the literature supporting these frauds is cited as are the politics of reimbursement. A section on marijuana stresses the need to take a hard look at the perils of legalization. While researching the cost of unscientific health care (over $40 billion), I discovered quackery embedded in the system (over $100 billion), including fraud in the scientific literature, fraud in the medical profession, in Big Pharma's pricing of drugs and hospital billing fraud. The extent to which legislatures are influenced by the money pharma spends on campaigns on an annual basis was tabulated. It exposes the weakness of our response to the opioid crisis. This book will be of interest to everyone in the United States interested in the quality of their health care. The aim is not to be all-inclusive but to stimulate national dialogue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our country and our government have huge issues to deal with today. We have enormous debt, high unemployment, entitlement programs that are unsustainable, pornography, drug use, and skyrocketing divorce rates. We lack the honesty, integrity, and moral values of our forefathers. Our country isn't broken. People are broken. Author Steve White proposes a solution to these ever-increasing problems. In The 11 Things Your Kids Should Know (So They Can Save America), he discusses eleven important principles that should be the foundation of every child's upbringing. By focusing on these basic ideas that help young people form good moral compasses, White believes we can raise a generation that embodies the same values as the country's Founding Fathers, thereby bringing honesty, integrity, and moral values back to America. Some of the principles he discusses include teaching children to be nice, like themselves, make a difference, eat healthy and stay fit, never stop learning, and get to know God. Using real-life examples, White shows how we can equip today's children to make a difference, regain our value system, and save our nation.

Book excerpt: What would it mean to commit to unconditional honesty and what impact might that have on our lives? Inspired by her popular New York Times article, "How Honesty Could Make You Happier," award-winning journalist Judi Ketteler takes a deep dive into the hard truths about honesty, from the personal to the political... We're incensed by politicians who lie and corporations that cheat, but when it comes to our own honesty choices, we often barely notice. So, what happens when we do notice? Judi Ketteler thought of herself as an honest person. And yet, she knew it wasn't the whole story... How often was Judi engaging in the same dishonest behavior she was condemning in others? To answer that question, she started her "Honesty Journal," and set out to confront her perennial fear of speaking the truth in a range of situations--including with friends, her kids, and even inside her complicated marriage. The result is a timely consideration of the joys and pains of truth in a world that seems committed to lying.

Within these pages, you will find a total of 72 poems, each one carefully crafted and selected for this collection. But why is the number 72 special, you may ask? In some traditions, this number is associated with completion or perfection, it is considered a sacred number, believed to hold powerful energy and significance. The number 72 is often used as a measure of time. For me, the number 72 holds a special meaning as it represents the culmination of a journey. It took me time and effort to write and refine these 72 poems, and I am thrilled to be able to share them with you. I am so grateful for the opportunity to share my poems with you. Writing has always been a way for me to express myself and to make sense of the world around me. Poetry, in particular, has the power to convey complex emotions and ideas in a way that is both beautiful and economical. I have always been drawn to the way poets can pack so much meaning into a few short lines, and I hope that my own poems will have the same impact on you. I hope that as you make your way through these 72 poems, you will find something that speaks to you, whether it's a word, a phrase, or an emotion. Thank you for taking the time to read my work. Happy reading!
